Can't quite work out if that was rly shit or quite good.

Quick points:
  • Grey's years of torture apparently involved being upholstered until he resembled a sleeping bag, yes? I totally see the family resemblance in the NONSHINY ACTING, though.

  • SPACEPIG. And the Hoix. Red bucket, blue bucket hoix, lol.

  • Umm... there were explosions? Rhys and Andy were kind of cool?

  • Jack doesn't ever change, really, even after 2000 years. Are he and Ianto still an item now, or has he spent too much time underground? I love it when this show gives me NO CLUE.

  • I maybe cried a bit? But I knew what was going to happen, so. Gah. maybe next time I'll stay unspoiled, maybe that would be better.

  • AS YOU CAN TELL, I AM DRUNK. I NEED ALCOHOL TO WATCH THIS BIG GAY SHOW. SUE ME.

  • Oh, and 2000 years underground? What's that coat made of, asbestos?

I'll try and make more sense tomorrow or something.

SPACEPIG!!!

We had two deaths and a very special guest star. That leaves no time for anything related to the lead's significant other. Or friend with benefits. Or part-time shag. Whatever.

Good night.

Don't draw any conclusions from this ep. It's a Very Special Episode and therefore cannot be used for purposes of evaluating Jack/Ianto.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jack/Ianto gets sacrificed to Jack/John if they can get JM back for enough episodes to do a 'reformed for love of Jack' storyline.

This is still a good point. I'm worried though that this Very Special Episode looks like it's leading into a Very Special Season. WTF with the 5 episodes in a week?

That is why I'm very bummed about the episode from a Jack/Ianto standpoint. They didn't work in anything for them as a couple, even though they fit in scenes for every other couple.

Once upon a time there was a Ianto and he was very pretty and saved the day, and to celebrate, he had sex with Jack and then they ate pies. It was a good time.

And now I am going to DIE WAITING FOR THE TORRENT.

I know a little bit about the ep, though, even having not seen it, and I have to say, 2000 years? Really? That seems a little... excessive, isn't it? I can only imagine what that would do to the brain and I can't imagine that after all that time Jack would still be... you know, whatever he is, with Ianto now, at least not to the same extent. Of course I haven't seen the ep and don't really know exactly what happens or how he reacts so gaaaah.

I KNEW THAT WHOLE BOSTON TEA PARTY THING WAS A BAD IDEA.

ETA: Also, "I haven't seen the ep" is really code for PLEASE SPOIL ME BEFORE I DIE WAITING. LIGHTLY. SPOIL ME LIGHTLY.

At least if Jack does still have feeling for him, and I'm not sure they can let it go that easily, Jack has now been pining for Ianto a lot longer than he did for the Doctor. A lot longer. Damn!

Yep....and another damn!

I finally saw it. I didn't find Jack to be overly comforting of Gwen. Gwen sought the comfort. I did notice he tried to make sure Ianto felt it too.

It did bug me that they showed Gwen and Rhys on the couch, but they couldn't show a few seconds for a welcoming hug? It'd been 2,000 years! I know he clearly needed a moment with John. John did save him, after all, but just a moment with Ianto would have been appropriate.

It did strike me though. It felt like, in the end of the show, they kept Ianto back. Separated in a way. I can't decide if that was because Eve and John needed a moment in the sun, or if it was a character decision. I hope it was the latter.

I've gone back to hating Gwen full on again. Will someone please explain to me why any of those police officers would need a pep talk from her? Why they would even listen to someone who had last been seen by them to be a PC? It's not like her talk was that charismatic and wonderful. Eve isn't that kind of actress, and Gwen isn't that kind of character, so why!?! Even the awesome PC Andy showed her up when he made that comment about aliens running amok in Cardiff being all in a days work. So if that's true, why the speech? Ugh. Sorry, rant over.

I wanted to chime in and say I didn't take the lack of a h/c scene between Jack/Ianto or the body language / placing of Gwen/Jack/Ianto during the final hub scene as the harbingers of doom for the Jack/Ianto relationship.

Honestly, I'm extremely happy to have gotten a very stoic Ianto. IMO, that is what Jack needed from him, not someone who was needy and required coddling (Gwen and to a lesser extent, John were filling that role rather perfectly). Once he saw Jack was alive and well, that was enough for him; he didn't require his attention. Really, it would have come across as super pathetic if the writers had given us an Emo!Ianto in this episode,IMO.

Going by Ianto's body language during the final hub scene, he really did want to be hugged. It was if he was trying to maintain his distance in an effort to retain control over his emotions and just get on with what needed to be done, which included being a rock for Jack. Did you notice how Ianto gave a slight roll of his eyes when Gwen exclaimed she didn't think she could go on? I loved that little eyeroll because I, too, rolled my eyes at her. I wanted to scream Gwen, it's not about you! It's about Jack! He's the one whose world has all but fallen apart...

As for them highlighting Gwen/Jack, well, I expected that. I could see that was coming during the closing shot of "Fragments." It was a shot of Jack with Gwen standing behind him. The shot said to me these are the lead characters of the show, and they would be leading the season finale...

I meant to write that based on Ianto body language during the final hub scene, he did NOT want to be hugged.

Yes. This is what I saw too. It feeds into the idea that he's the dominant one in their personal relationship.

And that eyeroll! Yep. Just when I think Ianto - and GDL - can't get more awesome. That had to be the one take scene that didn't have a rehearsal.

On a COMPLETELY different topic, I think during the episode CC answered the question as to who Jack was addressing in KKBB when he made the statement: I came back for you...all of you.

In Tosh's goodbye video, her I love you to Owen, in style and delivery, very much mimicked Jack's words to Ianto.

Compare:

"I came back for you [Ianto]... all of you [team]"

to

"I love you [Owen]...all of you [team]

I think it’s a pretty good bet that the entire TW fandom will agree that Tosh’s ILY to Owen was of a different and deeper meaning than her ILY to the team.

I went back and watched, and I didn't see it as an eyeroll; I saw it as blinking back tears, because it happened again, to a slightly lesser extent, when Jack spoke. He was turning his eyes a little towards Jack because Jack was moving, but he looked too devastated to be rolling his eyes.

I went back to watch it again, because the last thing I want to do is misinterpret something that serious. That small action would say a lot of what Ianto (or maybe even GDL) thinks of Gwen.

The thing is, I still see an eyeroll. I went back and watched the entire scene from the start of Toshiko's tape and only watched Ianto's eyes when he was on the screen, and at no time to his eyes get wide at all except in that one moment. I watched several times paying attention to facial expression as well. I even watched it in slo mo.

His eyes went up and to his left for just a fraction of a second. Jack is on his right. And his jaw elongated the same way it has the other times he's rolled his eyes. When Jack starts to speak his eyes stay forward. He's crying, so he's fluttering his eyelashes a bit to keep the tears from his eyes, but he doesn't look in Jack's direction.

I there is one thing Ianto is capable of, it's multi-tasking his emotions. He was sad, but as stated before, pretty stoic. This isn't the first time Ianto has lost someone close to him. It not even the first time he's lost multiple people who were close to him in one go!

The more I think about it, the eyeroll can be interpreted in many ways. Maybe he was thinking "oh great, we just lost two people, and now that's three." It may not mean "shut up you cow, you have no idea what real pain is!" No matter how much I want it to. :)

2000 years?

From: (Anonymous)
Just thinking about the Jack being buried for 2000 years thing...maybe he wasn't. Sure, we know that he was dug up in 1901 and frozen by Torchwood. But maybe in the intervening years he was...with the doctor? if capn jack is going to be in DW, then maybe that's where it fits in. Because if he leaves TW at the end of Exit Wounds to be with the doctor, i think that would be a bit crap, as the last season ended that way too. Plus, i don't think jack would leave in the immediate aftermath of tosh and owen's deaths. I think there has to be more to the burial, because realistically, if you were buried for 2000 yrs (well, 1800 and something) you would be completely bonkers. And as someone else pointed out, THAT COAT is no made of asbestos.
