Nos' got me thinking about Rose again, spreading the h8 and such. (I applaud her for it, I really do) And the whole thing actually got me thinking about fangirl projection and the Rose thing. Maybe I just don't get it.

If I'm honest about Who, the thing with me is, I never wanted to be the companion. Maybe that's a strange quirk of mine, but I always wanted to be The Doctor. In that sense the Doctor was always pretty asexual for me. Why the hell would you want to be the companion? Maybe that's what bugs me about the Rose love.

And thinking about it now, that's obviously why Ten has broken my brane, because wanting to be the Doctor and do the Doctor at the same time just leads to a mind full of WANK.

*goes for wank*
(not really, obviously, I'm far too busy with stuff)

I don't exactly hate Rose in herself, I just find her annoying (and at times unlikable). But the way that fandom treats her, that the production team goes on about her, and the endless hype on her just exacerbates that annoyance.

And the popular girl analogy is messing with my head a bit, because - I'm going entirely from my personal experience here - Rose comes off as an entirely different sort of figure from teen society. The condescending popular girl was normally the one with reasonable marks, not too rebellious, is polite to the teachers, family doing okay, money wise. Rose's background is more the bitchy popular girl, the kind that is less secure about their popularity, less about appearances and more about having fun, with a slightly less comfortable family life. The kind that's more in your face mean, and has less respect from people.

And you combine these facts, and it gives me the unpleasant mental image of Rose as the sort of school social climber, using the Doctor as her means to move up, to get that. She wants to be better than what she is. And so, she is ever so nice to the servant girls. But then she goes on with "Maybe Lucy's a but fick," which is such a bitchy popular girl thing.

It puts an interesting light on Jackie's comment about her Henrik's job "giving her airs." Because any airs she had were absolutely nothing to do with her job (it's freaking retail)

As time passes, I am finding it more and more difficult to seperate my opinion of Rose from my opinion of fandom. This is not a good thing for Rose.
