Oi! this is a tough one. But as a point of comparison on Amazon.com US-
DVD for Planet of the Dead retailed for $14.98, reduced to $11.49 (24% price drop 1 week after US showing)
DVD for COE retailed for $29.98 reduced to $14.49 (50% price drop 3 weeks after showing)
S1 - retailed for $79.98, now reduced to $47.49 (40% price drop after 3 years - but don't know when the price first dropped).
And to be fair - some new and pre- releases are showing price reductions though more in the 20%-25% range.
But even at half the length, they really priced the CoE DVD to sell. Its had 26 days in the top 100 trending downwards. If it really was a runaway hit I think they would have priced it a bit higher and wouldn't be showing a 50% price drop within 3 weeks.
I also think the 5 hour mini-series format is harder to sell as a DVD. Its easy to find an hr to watch 1 TV episode; 2 hours for most movies, but one 5 hour story arc is a bit long.
I found an interesting article about BBC at Digital Spy. http://www.digitalspy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1071894.
Unfortunately, its pre-COE - but I'd be interested if anyone can find the actual DVD sales figures.
