Yes, I'm commenting on every episode, so it's time for Cyberwomenz...

Ahh, bless. This was the first episode I really liked. Stuff happened! It was exciting, there were cyberbikinis! Yay! I know what you're thinking, you're thinking, Whelk, you liked it cause it had Ianto in it, innit? Well, yes and no. I do love Ianto, yes, and his besuited welsh vowelled emo tummyrats, I'll be honest, but I actually liked this one not so much on a superficial level, but in the way it actually propelled him, as a character, from out of absolutely nowhere, into the limelight as being someone who actually has a backstory. Now, I do think the writers actually shot themselves in the foot somewhat in giving him this backstory, but I'll explain that later.

Observations: Gwen's face when Jack says something about assuming battle positions or whatever it was, that "We have battle positions?" face, is quite priceless. Too busy being felt up by Jack to find out about the battle positions, eh Gwen? Bless you, you're so useless.

The hard on conversation I could have so done without, but that's probably just because Gwen/Owen makes me throw up in my mouth a little, so I'll let it slide.

The boykissing confuses me. First of all, I never quite worked out if we're meant to be concluding that Jack can transfer some of his magic immortal mojo to others. A lot of people seem to have jumped to that conclusion, but is this actually the case? Help me out, canon peeps... Apart from that, I just think it's a bit weird. But that's probably because Jack's whole extremely emotional reaction to Ianto's betrayal made me assume at the time that they had been shagging beforehand, despite reports to the contrary. So maybe that belief is what throws me a little. I always just figured it was a diversionary tactic on Ianto's part, a kind of "What's in that room in the basement?" "I don't know, Sir, but I would very much like to suck your cock every time you ask so let's just go with that, yes?" "OK, that works for me." kind of situation. Watching it again, I can get into the idea that they weren't in fact shagging at this point, but that makes me squick a little again, because that implies, to me, that Jack made a conscious decision to keep Ianto and redirect his energy and devotion towards him instead. Which makes me think harassment again. Oh well.

And so we come to Ianto... They done give him backstory. Ah. I think, in a way, the writers didn't really take into account the fannish fervour this show attracts, what with its connection to Who. I think they just thought it was a nice little nod to the parent show and left it at that. Unfortunately, Whofans are really quite anal and obsessive and giving Ianto this story throws up soooo many questions in the average fan's mind that will never be given a satisfactory answer. Not without devoting another five episodes to the boy, anyway.

They tell us he worked at TW1, as did Lisa. They tell us he survived, AND managed to rescue his Cybernised girlfriend, and they go on to tell us elsewhere, that not very many people survived at all. Immediately we are led to conlude that Ianto is made of clever magical WIN. Which also immediately begs the question: Why is he making coffee? Jack knew at least part of the story, why did he give him bin duty in the first place? Did Ianto CHOOSE bin duty so he could look after Lisa? Didn't Jack think that was a bit odd, or at least a waste of his talents?

And how did he manage to move his cybergirfriend into the Hub, in Cardiff, from LONDON, without ANY HELP from anyone? What sort of clever magical win is this boy made of? And, while we're at it, HE WORKED AT TW1!!! Ianto knows who the Doctor is, surely, even the armed burly henchmen working for Yvonne knew who the Doctor was, surely Ianto does too? In fact, he probably knows that that's the Doctor's hand in that jar, he was working there when they blew up the Sycorax ship. Just the simple statement "Ianto worked at TW1" brings up so much in the way of questions, it's not even funny. Does he know who Jack is? We've been given clues that Jack's been with TW for years and years, either working there or under observation, it's not beyond the realms of possibility, is it? And while we're at it, Ianto wears a suit, like everyone at TW towers did, now I like the suit a lot, as you well know, but it does raise the question as to how much of an Yvonne Hartman style Torchwoodite Ianto really is, it's not like he's adapted to the laid back attitude of Three in any way, he's been at TW1 all his working life, how much of that mentality has rubbed off?

In short, what they did there, Ianto-wise, is propel him from button nosed, quietly snarky teaboy to arguably the most interesting character in the show, one with even more unanswered questions about his history than even Jack has. It's not really surprising, then, that Cyberwoman was the episode that turned Torchwood into The Jack and Ianto Show in many people's minds. Which at least explains the fanfic, right?

I like Cyberwoman, mostly because nobody particularly annoys me in this episode, not even Owen, and there is plot and character development. And mostly because there is a pterodactyl fighting a blatantly tittilatingly dressed Cyberwoman. With barbeque sauce. EVEN GAYER THAN THE FIRING RANGE, OH YES.

WIN.
