Anyway, I hated the bit where they were all praying to Tennant in Episode one, but not as much as I hated the bit where Jo was awesome and had an awesome life and told us all about it and then suddenly did a U-turn and was pining for the Doctor for 5 billion years because that's what wimmins companions do in Rusty's world.

Other than that, though, I hated it not very much because Smiff was in it and Sarah Jane and Jo were a bit gay for each other. The plot and pace were a bit awful, but that's only to be expected.

Ho hum.

At least SJS didn't mention Rose. I was sort of amazed by that, considering it's Rusty.

Yeah, same here, but that bit before Jo where they're all "remember him" and it's all these loving shots of Tennant gurning like a loon made me do a slight sick in my mouth. The whole first episode seemed a bit "Wasn't the Rusty Era great??" to me, to the extent that it became a bit fourth-wally, even.

And don't forget Sarah Jane asking if Ten was "all right" even though Ten was obviously a bit dead now and why is she wondering if regeneration hurts when she's actually witnessed one and it didn't look painful?

I squeed at the mention, 'cos you know, AAAACE!!! But basically he's retconned Ace into some kind of Dame Anita Roddick/Bob Geldof businessperson-type and to raise those BILLIONS she probably hangs out with Bill Gates and is pally with the G8....hopefully she's subversively using the money to fuck over the Right globally and fund Wikileaks. Or something. OK, the idea of Ace funding Wikileaks makes me grin.

Admittedly, given Sophie's age etc it's probably more likely that she'd appear in the show in this kind of role now, but still. I said RTD would retcon her, didn't I?

YES, THIS. That pretty much ruined the whole episode for me, with the icing on the failcake being that Jo's family does such wonderful things that they apparently don't have time to be an actual family, so Rusty managed to both have an intact family *and* break it up.

I wanted to adore this episode, and I ended up swearing about it on my LJ.

PS - can I say how lovely it is to have someone else on the flist see the same flaws I did? Because I'm seeing love and squee and kisses and that's not what I saw on screen. I saw Rusty doing his standard emotional issues checklist, slightly cleaned up for the kiddies.

I was wholly expecting her to have pined for him, that's what Rusty does, after all, he thinks that's rly noble and romantic and shit, but it just came completely out of the blue for me after how she acted and talked about her life in the first part, it was jarring. And then the whole thing about the family being dysfunctional just tacked in there and her telling Sarah Jane to get a fella, it seemed like a checklist of all the shit that makes me hate RTD's writing. Also, that line about the universe shivering or whatever, not even Matt Smith could salvage that one, it was completely out of character for Eleven. In character for Ten, sure, but not Eleven.

so, RTD remains unable to write anything that isn't "MAH ISSUEZ LET ME SHOW YOU THEM"? Sigh. Hopefully this is the last gasp of RTD in the Whoniverse, since for me TW has already moved out of Who-dom.
