Comic Sans. I didn't take you guys very seriously, but NOW you've convinced me with your Comic Sans there.

BRB LOLLING FOREVER.

Actually, scratch that, that ENTIRE WALL is a like a SHRINE TO TASTELESS FONTS (and lovehearts!)

IANTO WOULD KILL YOU ALL for the fonts alone.

ETA: Also, that one in the left column, third down, that promo pic, anyone else ever thought GDL had weird feet in that picture? No? Just me, then?

Srsly. I think that TPTB see this fannish nonsense and say, yeah, right, no.

Not against fannish pursuits. Hence, my presence answering this post. BUT, when folk are reduced to this Hannah Montana like devotion, they kinda lose credibility.

Just sayin'.

When I initially planned my trip to Cardiff for Jan this year (a year ago) I was looking forward to getting my pic taken outside the TOURIST OFFICE.

But NO.....I had to get it taken outside this SHRINE instead.

I agree, some of the items did make me smile, but this? Is just going a bit TOO far, IMHO...

Well, I'm not flying to Cardiff to add my flowers to the memorial, and no Ianto isn't coming back, but it doesn't bother me a bit. If people want to do it, and it harms no one, why not?

Now if the Welsh Tourist board was upset with it, I'd feel differently. But they seem to be promoting this as much as anyone else.

But how can this be considered a proper shrine/memorial WITHOUT PIES!? Something is very wrong here, LOL.

I was with stargazer60 in Cardiff, and there was the one with it saying Ianto was just on Holidays that was cute. Everything else was just batshit crazy.

You know if they spent the money they collected doing their crazy coffee sending, and spending money on a plaque, and donated that all to charity any charity would be thrilled with $310 (or maybe that was pounds) a month.

Comments like this always drives me a little nuts. (so really, I'm not trying to pick on you).

Hey, I could stop reading these comments and use the time I spend on the interwebs volunteering at a soup kitchen not far from my house...hey I could get rid of my DSL connection and donate the money to charity but really, that's my prerogative.

Its their time, their money, we all have our own priorities. If it makes them happy its fine by me. I just hope they are not under the delusion that Ianto coming back. Frankly I don't think TW is coming back (let alone Ianto) - certainly not in Cardiff. As for TW USA - its been a bit quiet out there...hmm...

Then don't read my comment. Plain and simple. But really they need to get over it. It's a fictional character. If these people did what they are doing for a real person the world would be better off.

A non real person isn't going to give a shit that people are putting things on his fake tourist office entrance.

95% of these people in the campaign are out for vengeance, there's only a couple of people who are not completely crazy.

I hate the fact that they represent the fandom and try to claim things they haven't done and that they are holier than thou.

And you don't know a thing about pilot season either. So fox was interested. It was most likely blown out of proportion like most news that is associated with RTD and co. Fox is interested, they commission one script. They gather a cast, they shoot it, they view it. They like it, they put it out to a test audience, they like it, they order a series. This usually doesn't start happening till a bit later on. The only show that got an early make for a Pilot was the DT thing Rex is not your lawyer. Which is another reason why people over reacted with that, so it wasn't shortlisted as a mid season placement for this spring, it was shot really early in pilot season, which is why it wasn't picked up for fall yet either because there are no other shows in the pot for NBC to pick and choose from to mold their line ups.

So yes, there was an interest for a script. Fox may or may not have liked it. So what, just because it's Torchwood, doesn't mean we have to know every little detail in the planning stages. Do we know every detail about every other pilot in pilot season? No.

By the time the TV upfronts happen in May we'll have an idea, until then we don't.

But whatever, I'll just be accused like normal about not knowing anything.

Wow - you seem as angry as the folks who want Ianto back. I don't get why. Seriously, I don't see how putting up silly notes at a tourist bureau office is vengance. Against who? RTD? Like he cares? Puleez.

Frankly, I find your vitriolic reaction a lot more disturbing than any I WUV IANTO note on that wall.

See I'm all for free expression. Even for people who want to put up silly stuff about a fictional character. Even yours.

But the false choice of "But they could do something else with the money", which I see all the time when people don't agree with someone's position, but really can't articulate a valid reason why sets my teeth on edge.

As for TW US - all I said was that I hadn't heard anything lately. Yes, I was looking to see if anyone had any news. Is that a crime? Felony? Misdemeanor? Whatever else you chose to read into it - hey that's your issue.

I'm replying to bandgeek01 about pilot season because I can't reply directly...please don't hit me with the pink sign! [ducks]

Just wanted to support what she(?) said, and also point out that it may even take a year or two to get to the pilot stage, if TW USA even gets that far. The script will get written and revised a few times. All RTD has right now is network that said they'd look at the script.

And yeah, Rex is not dead, but it's not looking good. It really should have gotten the pick up once Jay got canceled. I have feeling it was a pilot they were shooting early for that purpose. The news on it isn't very good to begin with, so don't get your hopes up. Plus, it's NBC. They are still the biggest idiots in the pond.

Not just you. GDL is unique, overall - a big part of Ianto's original appeal, I'm sure. (He was doomed to become a character actor from the start.)

Most everything about 'the shrine' makes me smile. But, I'd love to know why exactly the tourist office got so involved. (Do they like the added publicity? Are one or two of them rabid Ianto fans? Is it, maybe, the sort of thing they used to dream about - a contemporary 'pop culture' site? Are they doing a study?)

I think that it brings tourists to the area, as simple as that. It's something to look at! I guess they need to maintain it, and to be honest I think it's very sweet of them to do so. I kind of like the epic nature of how long this shrine has lasted. But then as I said in my post below, I think it's sweet, and it doesn't bother me at all. I never joined their campaign, but this and the charity thing are both nice ideas.

I agree about GDL, he really should be a character actor, and he does have a knock kneed walk.

If it were just upkeep of the site, I wouldn't wonder. And even the on-site 'official' posting explaining to passers-by the significance of all the fan-works makes sense, if they're just hanging on to a unique tourist lure (in an out-of-the-way and otherwise useless space). The award thing seems a bit odd, a bit beyond the tourist board just doing their job.

You'd have no trouble convincing me that the head of the Ianto Campaign actually coerced it out of them. The picture used for the news blurb is a bit different from 'award ceremony' photos I'm used to seeing, however insignificant the award involved is. And it may be a cultural difference, but in every U.S. photo of this type, both the award-er and the award-ee would have their hands on the award itself. The fact that she's the only one holding it gives me the impression that she basically 'awarded herself.' *shrugs* It just makes wonder what extra investment, if any, the tourist board actually has in 'the shrine.'

Oh the photo thing doesn't mean anything in that sense, it sounds from the articles that the mermaid quay people were perfectly pleased to receive the gift (pretty sure it was a token rather than an award) In Britain we don't have quite such organised thinking really, mostly a photo would just get taken, with either person holding said plaque, or award or whatever.

I think they would be OK with it as it appeared in their local press, so it is just that extra bit of publicity.

Well, that's good to know. And I'm sure the appreciation is genuine, but the cynic in me can't help but feel that the Ianto Campaign will get more publicity out of it than the tourist board. (Yeah, mine is the focus that's skewed here. The whole Ianto Dying Debacle still bothers me more than it should.)

Mmm it says in the article that she is a teacher from the Forest of Dean. Which I assume makes her Welsh, but there may be little bits of the Forest in England, not sure. I'm not sure whether it would have been better to be a 17 year old or not, I suppose for the journos she was a better choice.

I think it may well be the same woman as I do remember the classic intro from the report about how this woman was 41 and had a Bachelor of Education, which I guess makes her a teacher. (I should be a detective) I just hope she didn't show any of them the report.

Ahhh, if that's so, then that could be same one. (Depends on the odds of middle aged women with a teaching degree running the campaign...)

That meltdown in my inbox was NOT pretty. She probably meant to make me feel like crap but all it did was make a, wonder WTF she was on, b, lol, and c, want to offer her the number of a reasonably priced psychiatrist. Reason being that the level of obsession she displayed is seriously not healthy. I see people like this at work sometimes and I have strict instructions to call Securitas whenever I do.

You'd make a perfect Nancy Drew. I'd pen your tales!

That would've been my reply, but I try not to antagonize the wild bears. :)

I was polite, or I thought I was. My main problem was that I do consider Madder_rose my name (on LJ), and finding out that it was used (by extension) to support something I don't agree with or people I don't agree with, well...

Apparently she didn't like the fact that people disagreed...

Ooh, well the Forest of Dean is beautiful so I'm jealous of her location and I could visit there to complete my investigation. Probably more Miss Marple than Nancy Drew....

Interesting about the meltdown, kind of shows a lack of insight as I would have thought anyone could have seen how absurd that thing was. I really feel that the young teens are probably just being young and enthusiastic, I dread to think how embarrassing I would be if I was their age. It seems so odd to me in her age group. But then look at the Johnettes, they aren't much better.

She also lives scarily close to GDL.

Date: 2010-02-19 10:01 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] madder-rose.livejournal.com
Actually, yeah. Miss Marple is more appealing. I love that series with Geraldine McEwans (sp?!). It's brilliant.

Like I said, I see them at work sometimes, and they basically live their lives through other people and/or characters (in this case). Literally. You take that aspect away and they're lost. I'm pretty sure this is what happened here. Any relatively sane person can differentiate between reality and fantasy, but for these people the two sort of meld together. It's like a personality disorder.

I doubt he's in any danger from her. Seems she's only interested in Ianto Jones (the "real" persona), rather than the actor behind him. (The plaque says Ianto Jones, mentions the tourist office etc, the report was completely focused on Ianto, not GDL). Um. Yeah. I might've studied Abnormal psychology for a bit...

I had three thoughts on seeing this image.

1st - I really want to shake these people and tell them that IANTO IS NOT A REAL PERSON!! It's Television. Let. It. GO!

2nd - If you're going to be photographed, for God's sake put on some make up. Please try not to look like the saddest sack who ever lived their life in front of a computer screen. Try to act like someone people can take seriously. No, that isn't shallow. That's business. That's how the world works. Respect yourself, and people respect you.

3rd - Then I remember thought number 1, and realize these people really are the saddest sacks who ever lived their lives in front of a computer screen, and weep that I ever appreciated the character they have co-opted in their desperate co-dependent fantasy.

Okay, one more thought...COMIC SANS?! REALLY?!

...just...wow...
