I say I don't want to talk about that show ever again and then they announce FOXWOOD.

I only have one thing to say about that:

AH HAHAHAHHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

OH.

Oh God. GOD OH... oh.

Ow, my sides. Oh.

Nah, I've got nothing else. Feel free to talk amongst yourselves, though.

It's not a done deal yet, is it?

Yeah, I'm just going to be ROTFLMAO (with you and a good-sized crowd, I'm sure) until I see news of scheduled filming.

I thought it was Foxwood that had prompted your putting the kibosh on Torchwood discussion.

As I said in [livejournal.com profile] fodian's LJ, it's not like we don't ALREADY have several US versions of Torchwood. Fringe and Warehouse 13 have struck me particularly hard in this area.

I, too, thought that. Glad you got a laugh out of it. A really, really, really, really, really good laugh.

I think you need a corset, as your sides must need the support since you've split them.

Facinating that Davies's big move to the States, apparently sees him working with the same people on the same show.

I called this right after CoE aired.

That gave me a good laugh too. Fox + RTD = wank of EPIC levels.

To sum up my post on the subject, this couldn't *possibly* be dubious or doomed to fail. /sarcasm

(Seriously, in what universe does it make sense to build up a property in one country and then take it to a completely different one? And under the financial wing of a company that lost a boatload of money the last time they dealt with the parent property?)

A lot of us were waiting for this announcement from the moment it was released that Julie was headed for the States. A new entry for TVTropes' category "Burn Down the Show". Ditch everything that linked it to Cardiff and peddle the empty shell as a marketable "brand" to US TV - and all they got was FOX. This has got disaster written all over it.

To be fair, one of the few UK-to-US adaptations that's generally considered to have worked -- or even been superior -- was Queer as Folk.

Tellingly, RTD did not write the US version...

Date: 2010-01-20 04:23 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kel-reiley.livejournal.com
he wrote some of it, though
and the only reason i think it worked is b/c after the 1st couple episodes it totally branched off into its own storyline

BUT! it was on SHOWTIME not FOX and it was a SOAP OPERA (which RTD is pretty good at writing) and not sci-fi (which he is NOT good at writing)

He's not listed as having any writing credits for the US series (that I can find, anyway); just as being some unspecified "consultant". So...

It's not that FOX is bad at sci-fi, it's that TW had themes I doubt FOX has the balls to run with. And what's left, Foxwood, is Just Another Monsters on Earth show (maybe with token fanservice lesbians). And, okay. We've been there, done that. A lot. Sans the Whoniverse links, swearing and male homoerotica, TW just wasn't all that great a sci-fi show. *shrugs*

Date: 2010-01-20 05:12 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kel-reiley.livejournal.com
huh... i'm pretty sure he wrote a few of the episode arcs, but he was def not the showrunner or man in charge

Sans the Whoniverse links, swearing and male homoerotica, TW just wasn't all that great a sci-fi show - trufax, and yet those are the aspects that drew many ppl to the show in the 1st place

also, FOX blows - honestly the amount of times it has screwed over genuinely good shows (firefly, wonderfalls) it's a wonder anyone is willing to deal with fox at all (especially whedon, with dollhouse, you'd think he'd be wary)

the things is, i don't see a show like torchwood (the way it was, ridiculously gay and all) to be a good match for fox - they'll either change everything (i do not see a character like JACK on fox) and it will be a totally different show or it will get cancelled within 2 episodes

No, RTD was not directly involved in the US version. He was only listed as the creator and was an "advisor" on the first season. Basically, the US showrunners used several of the plots from the UK version for the first few episodes. He didn't write a word.

see that's what i thought until someone said 'no no, he wrote a lot of it' so i checked and according to IMDb, he wrote 51 episodes...
imdb is notorious for having its 'facts' wrong, but yeah, also i'm sure i read it in an article or something somewhere

but whatevs

Yes, he was a "writer" because he held certain rights to the characters and story lines. Trust me. He didn't write a single episode.

I know this is Wikipedia, but you'd think that he'd get a mention if he wrote that many episodes. Especially given the cult following this shows has.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Queer_as_Folk_episodes

Notice that on RTD's IMDB page he's listed as the creator not writer. That's considered a writing credit, even if he didn't write a word.

You'll be laughing out the other side of your face when it's so awful it causes the whole world to be sucked into a black hole.

Me, I have a much more optimistic take on it. This is the BBC's way of distracting RTD and keeping him busy in the U.S., while they commission their own British version of season 4. It will be directed by Euros Lynn, and the very first episode will deal with how CoE was a baby aftershock of LotTL and becomes the Week-That-Never-Was, and the Team - all the Team - pick up from where they left off at Journey's End, or the Dead Line, take your pick.

Perhaps the newly commissioned' pre-CoE radio plays will set this ball rolling.

See. My version. Much Much Happiness in the Making.

This! I find it pretty funny that RTD want to America to do 'original' projects and his first project isn't original at all.

I find it interesting because I'm wondering if this news ties back to several weeks ago when Barrowman was spouting that s4 was a go-ahead and it was going to be 13 episodes long - and RTD had to pipe up and say he was making it up as he went along.

Now of course, I'm wondering if it meant that they'd discussed the American project with Barrowman and have him signed up for it already.

Then I got to thinking. What if the American one is based around Jack . . . and the British one (if they still do one) is based around Gwen. They both get to lead their own branches, bask in their own glory . . . it's got definite possibilities (or should I just go back to my corner and keep drinking the wine?)

don't think it'll be awful, but I don't think it will last. Especially on Fox. You either hit it fast, or you're gone with that network.

As others have brought up, there are already better shows handling these story lines over here. Fringe, Flashforward, and Warehouse 13 are the big three. I'm wondering if Fringe will get another season, so this may be it's replacement, but it won't cut it. Plus, RTD doesn't have a big enough world view to make a US show work. Flashforward got a lot of crap early on, and it wasn't doing a half bad job. No way US Torchwood takes off anywhere but cable.

I completely agree. The only way I can see Torchwood: America working at all, is if the writing is A LOT better- especially
if it's replacing Fringe.

The best thing I can say about this is that as it's Fox, it will languish in the Friday Night Slot Of Death for three episodes before dying quietly.

Is this RTD being delusional again? I believe a tried and true method for a crazy person to stop being crazy is to apply brick.
