To anyone who may be a member of [livejournal.com profile] savecoffeeboy, mods of said establishment, those of you I've been talking to via PM:

I know I'm not the only one who objected to being in it, now for the love of God, TAKE THAT FUCKING PDF DOWN OFF MEGAUPLOAD UNTIL YOU'VE EDITED OUT THE BITS WE OBJECT TO.

Take it down. And while you're at it, tell your members to stop advertising it as if it doesn't make you look like INSANE, BACKWARD, CREEPY CHILDREN.

Dude! These are the same people, one of whom went on a bit of a tirade a few days back...comparing themselves to Barack Obama, in "Yes we can" mode, forgetting that they're ones indulging in vicious name-calling, thuggish tactics, and using a caffeinated beverage as their symbol. That doesn't make them Barack Obama in this analogy.

The gal I've been talking to indicated that the overeager idjit who put the file on Megaupload has either had a massive computer death or a case of the screaming idiocy, but regardless, can no longer access the Megaupload account (and doesn't recall the pwd to get someone else to login). So they're waiting for Megaupload to take it down for them. I have no idea how long this is likely to take or how they've gone about getting it handled. I suppose if someone were to send the link to Megaupload's complaints department and start screaming copyright, perhaps that might help. Then again, I think Megaupload turns a blind eye to these things in general.

I've just been begging people to stop talking about it and let it die a slow death. I'm quoted all OVER it - and my photograph is in there, too! - which is what I get for my initial enthusiasm, I suppose. But it's long since gone far too "out there" for my tastes. There's still a handful of people in the comm who have a clue how to run something like this, but far too many who are driving the ship are going at "ramming speed" with little regard to either the results or the consequences of their actions.

shouldn't there be a 'forgot your password? Click here to reset."

That would be logical, but, well...I dunno. Having done tech support for years before becoming a project manager, I've learned never to underestimate the stupidity of some users.

Yep. There's a forgot your password button AND a forgot your login button. ::eyeroll::

lawsontl - I've worked tech support too. My sympathies.

MU takes down copyright complaints, but this isn't a copyright complaint.

Someone please tell them that their bullshit excuse is idiotic.

A) what kind of email account is it? Gmail/ Yahoo/ hotmail? All accessible from any computer anywhere. Click the damn lost password link and get it down.

B) Not a option? Contact MU and simply ask them to remove it. No copyright complaint, just ask straight out, and give them as much information on the account as you can. I assume this person can at least remember their own email address.

C) Doesn't work? Get someone to represent the group and officially ask them to remove it because it's outdated and no longer represents your mission statement. Make the letter sound as professional as you can. I know this may be difficult for the people who put out that PDF, but please try to make it a 1 page letter without ad hominem attacks on MU.

D) If, for some odd reason none of the above works (and they will, all of them) then STOP POSTING THE LINK EVERYWHERE. Start telling people to stop posting the link, and follow up posts of the link with comments about how it's outdated and doesn't represent you.

Actually, they should do D anyway.

I think part of the problem is SIJ people who might still be posting the link (though I don't read the comm, I was told they'd been told NOT to post it anymore, at least last I heard, but telling people NO and getting people to stop are two different things). There are also lots of wank-type places still posting it: who_anon, fandomwank. I even heard a rumor, though I haven't seen the link, that someone else has uploaded it to a new location so they can ensure it's out there for pisstaking long after the originators take it down.

It's just going to run its cycle no matter what we do, and, like many things, the best way to end it is ignore it, I think.

But, as I've said elsewhere, having done tech support for a living, never underestimate the stupidity of some users. I had one who used to keep a magnetic timer stuck to her computer, then couldn't figure out why her floppies kept getting write errors (yeah, that's been a few years, I'm old). Another used to put her space heater right next to her computer, couldn't figure out why it broke... That someone cannot muster a password rescue in this day and age really doesn't surprise me.

I know you can't really stop the lulz, but you can at least stop feeding it. It's one thing to have a lulzy mirror for giggles. It's another to still have an official link.

This hasn't made FW. It should, but it hasn't. I lurk there, and with all the new VB stuff, I'm checking back pretty frequently right now. Also, unless someone got caps before they friendslocked, I'm not sure it can be put on FW.

My mother is a programmer. She started right after they phased out punch cards, so I'm not that young. I've heard all kinds of idiot enduser stories. The old magnet ones are a fave. A friend who used to do tech support in the mid-90s actually sat on the phone with someone for an hour before finally convincing them that the computer wasn't on. I would understand not being able to figure out how to do it, but I don't understand still claiming it after many people could have explained how to do it. That's my beef. It's a persecution complex, and not a real issue.

Oh yeah, and MU lets links stay up for months, so "waiting" isn't an option.

Your photo is in there? Good grief.

I got a long, ranting reply asking me how dare I ask to be removed when I write fanfic (apples and pears dearie...) after which came Howler-Post. Oh well.

Meanwhile, back at the farm I put it out of my mind, have ignored it for the rest of the holiday, and had a lovely Christmas. How was yours? :)

[livejournal.com profile] madder_rose has been having a right ding dong with the author of said report. Madder's on her hols right now, but check her recent posts. She's boiling mad!

This sounds a bit wussy but GDL, at the risk of alienating some fans, needs to tell them to back off and calm the fuck down.

Date: 2009-12-23 04:19 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lawsontl.livejournal.com
It's so not GDL's fault, though, so we really shouldn't hope he'll step in to solve the problem of overeager fans with a lot of enthusiasm, too much free time, and no sense of proportion.

The thing that constantly makes me *eyeroll* is that they think anyone will actually READ all of this. I know management types; if it's longer than a page, it's ignored. I TRIED to read it and couldn't maintain the stamina, and I want Ianto back, for God's sake. It's just so...naive? I'm really trying to be nice here, because I don't think they're malicious, just honestly misguided.

In "Hollywood" it's three sentences. That's it. If you can't boil your idea into three sentences you don't get an ear.

For the industry correspondence it's three paragraphs with three sentences each. Anything longer gets binned.

From: [identity profile] caledonius72.livejournal.com
I'm sorry - you're right. It's not GDL's fault that people have gone a bit crazy. And any comment he makes on it will be twisted to fit crack!logic.

I couldn't read all of it, and I've heard that it's already gone to Mark Thompson. Somewhere in White City (which I can see from my office window) a PA is looking at his inbox and going "WUT!?!"

naive? yes. hurting? yes. misguided? yes. malicious? perhaps, but only when you don't agree 110% with what they say and what they are trying to do.

You've heard of the tweet campaign to target Jeebs? Another crackpot idea courtesy of the vocal minority.

*spreads Xmas cheer around*

Not GDL's fault some can't keep their emotions in check. "They" are positive Mark Thompson will read it. I'm excpecting him to send it round for LOL's and possibly dart practice.

Actually, GDL should stay very far away from this. His comment can only make this worse. It really does have nothing to do with him.

I think actors and writers would do much better to stay very far away from their fandoms.

Problem is, fandoms want to see the objects of their obsession stars in the flesh.

But yeah, Gareth should not touch that powderkeg with a shitty stick. My bad for even suggesting it.

Date: 2009-12-24 12:58 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] erinnthered.livejournal.com
Oh, seeing them in the flesh, and having conversations with them is a good thing. It drastically cuts back on the delusion when people realize their object isn't going to suddenly fall in love with you at first sight. It also humanizes people in the entertainment industry, and gives people a more realistic view of what people in it do.

There's a difference between that, and the object of affection celebrity getting involved with the "business" of the fandom. Fandom is a world separate from the celeb, fans are not.

I was a bit weirded out to find that the updated version of the report was 45MB, while the old version was 22MB. That was enough to make me hit the back button really fast.

I hate to even want to consider asking, but is there a non LJ link for the 45MB version of this. Or is that on the MU link that's been given out everywhere. I'm bored.

Family issues suck monkey balls right now, and I need some laughter.

Doesn't mean it's actually any larger. Programs using autosave are notorious for inflated file sizes, especially if they're Microsoft based. Sometimes I copy/paste a fic from the existing document and save as a new name, and the file cuts in half.

Here's hoping it's that, and not more screen caps.

They've added two pages and reformatted it. So now it looks like a 12 year old who knows how to format threw it together.

I completely love how they've taken everything out of context and twisted into their own delusional fantasy. (*please note the sarcasm here*)

The mods don't listen and the author, well, the author is just bonkers.

I got the equivalent of 'FU, you write fanfic, don't argue with me when I quote you at random!'. Then it all ended in tears on the author's behalf, not mine. I just went 'eh, wth?' while my brain tried to comprehend the meltdown and my fingers desperately restrained themselves from replying, 'go cry to your momma' in an utterly childish way.

Really, I'm not that upset about it, but it is always quite nice to have random people prove to me that I am not as nutty as I thought.
