Okay, so I've been browsing this PDF of Save Ianto batshittery (I'm not saying the content is batshittery, the content is basically ALL OF THE INTERNET'S opinions about bringing back Ianto, the fact that someone actually put it together, though, really shows a disturbed mind at work). I've only managed to lightly skim about 100 pages of this 400 page (YOU'RE READING THAT CORRECTLY) and already I've been blockquoted and my graphics have been used and I DON'T EVEN SUPPORT THE SAVE IANTO JONES CAMPAIGN. Where do I go to complain about this bullshit?

See, and the reason I don't support the Save Ianto Jones campaign, is that it SO VAST AND SPRAWLING as to encompass all these sorts of levels of complete insanity. It's actually too big a project, encompassing ANYONE who is passionate about the subject, and allowing anyone with the inclination to make four hundred page pdf files the opportunity to speak on behalf of the campaign and all its members. And if people like this AREN'T speaking on behalf of the Save Coffee Boy campaign, then I'm afraid the Save Coffee Boy campaign isn't doing an awful lot to make that clear. (Going members-only, by the way? That's totally weird and makes you look more batshit than the vast majority of you are.)

And, you see, this is why I asked people to give money to ponies instead.

Someone has way too much time on their hands...and its not you! I saw this last night but when I saw the size of the file, I wasn't brave enough to open it.

Is it merely a compilation of everyone's posts about Ianto, or is it stuff taken out of context (OK, what I'm REALLY asking is 'am I going to be pissed on a personal basis if I open this up.'

I only sent $$ for the CIN campaign with Ianto. Those people feel they speak for TW fandom and they sure as hell don't. They don't speak for me that's for sure.

Oh God, they have cut and pasted things from our comm as well. (twhysterical9) I am a bit astonished that as mods we weren't asked, and I assume that you also haven't been approached before you or ninja teaboy were cut and pasted in.

This is really a bit bonkers and I don't quite see the point of it?

On the positive side it does link to the pony campaign.

I do actually admire the amazing job they have done of fundraising, and I think that campaigns have certainly worked before, although I'm not sure that they have ever been tried in Britain before. I want Ianto back, and I don't even care if Jack wakes up to find him in the shower, but I don't think it's fair play to quote GDL and JB the way that they do, the quotes are out of context, and I did cringe at them being used in this context.

I really don't see the purpose of this, and do feel a bit pissed off at being quoted in such a bizarre document without permission.

The Gwen hate is particularly appalling. Of course it would be nice to have Ianto back, but character-bashing is not on.

Aside from the fact that Quizilla polls are not a scientific sample, if you have to demonize another character to justify bringing another back, you're doing it wrong.

I think it's cool for fans to lobby for something they want -- whether anything happens because of it or not -- but that element turns me off so fast. There's no way I'd associate myself with any effort involving bashing.

2. Why does bringing back Ianto have to be at the expense of another character? That PDF keeps going on about how shocking it is that 3 major characters died in quick succession. So it would have been OK if Gwen had died in CoE then?

4. I've been reading angstosaur's latest fic, and she's written a delighful Gwen, the way they should have in the series, and most if not all of the comments are about how great Tosh or Owen are being in the fic. I keep praising the writing of Gwen to piss off the anti-Gwen brigade. A friend once described me as her "little Agent Provocateur" - i was so chuffed.

I'll have to check that fic out! I enjoy all of the characters (Owen's snark is hard for me to write, but Ianto's isn't, weirdly) and love to see them all in team stories. :)

Ianto and Gwen friendship fic is one of my favourite things ever.

Nobody has to love all of the characters equally or at all, but some people don't seem to realise that everybody has different faves and some don't seem to realise that not everyone agrees with them.

Hey I have been praising her Gwen! I don't think that everyone who wants Ianto back hates Gwen at all, I'm sure it's just a few who feel strongly. I also think that it is just a projection of the RTD hate. RTD has always been all about Gwen, Jack is secondary, so I think that she has suffered because fans feel angry at him.

Also I rather love to dislike her a lot of the time, and I personally have no problem with that, I don't like Owen in S1, and I can't bear the way the two of them are toward Tosh (my lovely Tosh who I relate to so much). I think both Gwen and Owen became more likeable as the show progressed, during S2, and Gwen is so much more likeable in the radio plays, where she is great, and in CoE. She is at her best with Rhys, who is indeed wonderful.

Yeah, character bashing is NOT the way to get your point across. Now, I had/have issues with Gwen, but I really liked the Jack-Gwen-Ianto team dynamic and was hoping it would last longer than a mini-series. This Ianto fan wanted them ALL to live at the end of COE.

There are characters on many shows which I don't really like that well, but "not liking" and "continually bashing" are two different animals.

I found out about this humungous steaming pile of WANK through phaetonschariot - I seem to be one of the lucky few who was able to download all 400+ pages, AND to get it to open on my Netbook without PDF!fail.

And once I got there I couldn't get past the first pages, but a document full of screen shots, unattributed quotes and very little analysis or comment other than "see, loads of people want Ianto back" and "we hate Gwen" and "RTD is a bastard".

AND I saw the block quote, highlighted text from a certain tencrush, and others and thought - "some people are going to be mightily pissed off".

Like most who've commented with phaetonschariot have said, 10 pages would be enough to get the point across. And I think the whole phenonmenon is worthy of analysis and comment, but from a disinterested 3rd party.

I'm quoted all OVER the place in it, many of which are not attributed. Aside from the fact my picture and quote from another comm are used like it was part of that one, and it gives the impression I'm in the core of this group...just, no.

There's typos, wrong titles, spelling errors, and the citing of quotes is completely insufficient. Um..."Livejournal" didn't say that, a USER on livejournal said it. As with Digital Spy, etc... (who make take unkindly to making it look like one of their articles stated something when it was actually a fan quote). I remember reading quite a lot of this when it was first posted, and the details to properly cite the quotes are there. They really should do so if they want any credibility.

I can see what they wanted to do, I really can. Their hearts are in the right place, and I want Ianto back fiercely, but this is not the way to do it. They should stick to the fundraising and the coffee, maybe buttons and t-shirts. NO ONE, especially not someone in power at BBC or RTD, is going to read all of this. I've been in Big Business for a long time. You want management attention, you make it fit on a page. You give them quick and dirty info and stats, not screen caps and novellas.

Apparently, they didn't learn anything over the uproar earlier this year when people were quoted without permission in a news article based on what they posted on the Internet, making the Ianto fans look a bit crazy. So, of course, they put together their own document (436 pages?!? uh...yeah, that's excessive) and either quote without permission or cite sources poorly. Lovely. It is the Internet, but still, there are "rules".

I saw that link last night, but was a bit wary about downloading something like that. I'm paranoid about anything that could possibly even remotely give my computer a virus. Looks like I should've been wary for other reasons.

And, yeah, brevity is key in this short-attention-span/time-is-money world we live in today.

i was LOLing about this pretty much all day yesterday - i couldn't actually read the thing, but i skimmed through and thankfully my name isn't anywhere near it (or it didn't come up when i searched, anyway)
