Shit Sandwich

Oh, so we ARE supposed to hate the Doctor now and think he's a cunt. It's not just me who's supposed to be thinking that, it's all of us. Thanks, Rusty. We've decided to avoid the show we call "Russell tells us what a brilliant thing we just watched."

I'll keep reiterating the same point, I used to watch this show with my kids and now they're just mostly confused and upset by it. That fucking sucks.

complain to the BBC.

And get everyone else who thinks the same to do the same. You can't get away with upsetting children like that, it's a family, pre-watershed show.

Poor kids :( I echo you should complain if it is not fulfilling its obligation to The Kids, as they are the target audience supposedly.

Moffat has scared the crap out of me but I've never hated his Doctor.

Isn't that kind of the point of the show? You're supposed to be scared and hide behind the couch. You're not supposed to think that the hero is a monster the universe would be better off without. RTD has badly mistaken these two concepts.

NOT THE FUCKING SHOW I SIGNED UP FOR.

Yet again, yep. I keep forgetting the fact that this is supposed to be a family show, but, taking that into account, so not the show it is supposed to be... *shakes head*

The Doctor was a complete dick by the end even by RTD standards. Adelaide and her crew were great though.

Half-way through the show I thought, "This is sort of okay." By the end I had to change my mind. What were all those introspective, soul-searching monologues for, anyway? Why does the grandmother have to be dead in order to inspire the granddaughter? And there is a signficant difference between dying in the line of duty on Mars, and committing suicide in your living room. How is the second type of death supposed to be inspirational?

I agree completely with your view that this was totally inappropriate for children. Actually, it was totally inappropriate for everyone who regularly watches Doctor Who, because we expect to see a fun-filled adventurous romp, not an angsty tragedy.

If I was slightly more inclined to conspiracy theorising, I would think that RTD is trying to simultaneously secure the future of the franchise by making us hate Ten and be glad to see the back of him when Eleven comes along AND put a bomb under Moffat's description via River of the swaggery, finger-snappy Doctor by demonstrating that it's a Bad Thing.

As it is, I just think it is confirmation of my theory that every time a character tells the Doctor he needs someone to stop him, it is Rusty's better judgement trying to tell himself that.

My 10 year old sis seemed to enjoy it but she didn't really understand the ending. She asked "Why couldn't the Doctor just take them somewhere else"...

I have to admit that I am 16 years older than your sister and I thought much the same ;)

Another 26 year old here - who spent most of the end thinking - "what the hell, dude? Take them to the future, have her waiting for her grand daughter or something."

I quite enjoyed TWOM but agree that it wasn't really suitable for younger children, who won't understand the concept of suicide in the way it was played out here.

RTD is getting increasingly bleak.

Oh god, I agree so much about the suicide and the general EPIC ANGST of this episode being far too.... grim, and grim in a really serious, human way - which I'm all for analysing in TV shows, just, err, not in a tea time episode of Doctor Who!

That said, I don't think we're supposed to hate the Doctor at all, and I don't. I mean, although he went a bit mad on power at the end, made a mistake, and messed it up royally, I could see why, I think his journey from that point to the end was at least well acted, and so from that side of things I could sort of... understand the Doctor in those moments. Yes, it was a bit disturbing to see him be like that, but in a way that was understandable, and a long time coming, if you had the potential power to change things from their grim reality, one day you just would be tempted to do so - of course, it didn't work, but the Doctor's realisation that he'd 'gone too far'... I liked it....

It was actually only when the angst/tension started to build up that I enjoyed the episode at all, it seemed to take a long while to get started.

I'm not sure why that is, when I HATED the man pain angst they gave Jack in TW, and killed the majority of the cast to add to.

Anyway, sorry, rambling :/

I just don't know how anyone could explain to children about the suicide. It seems to me that we always used to watch Dr Who and hide behind the sofa, I literally did with Tom Baker and my terror about Sutek, The Pyramids of Mars, I still feel a bit scared of him. However the Doctor was there to make it better, not morally confuse the children.

I think RTD wants to suck all of the joy and light out of the world, and then run away.

Well, my 9yr old son refuses to watch any Dr. Who after being traumatized by the gas mask kids in Empty Child, so I tend to forget it's supposed to be a kid's show. (Srlsy, he had nightmares - the only time in his life.) Yes, I agree turning the Dr. into a megalomaniac and having a suicide was probably not family viewing. Personally, I loved it. I guess I like the immortal man!pain.
