I went to post a comment somewhere and found I'd been banned from someone's journal. I've never been banned from anyone's journal before, and I quite like the person in question and don't recall ever having had a disagreement with them of any kind. Random defriendings by people who I thought were my actual friends I can deal with, but banning? Wow. Ouch.
Speaking of which, this is kind of where I am at the moment:
Speaking of which, this is kind of where I am at the moment:
- There's not a lot of joy for me left in Whovian fandom. I'll probably post something later about how much I hated Waters of Mars. I have no desire to watch anything RTD has produced or DT stars in, and I am only just managing to hold on to a scrap of enthusiasm for when Moffat and Smith come in. I hate Russell, I hate everything he's ever written, I think he's awful. His insistence on bringing all this emotional manpain and trauma into these shows that used to just be a joyful experience for me and, in the case of Who, for my kids, has ruined my fannish experience. I want the last three years of my life back, I wish I'd never started watching Torchwood, I wish I'd stopped watching Who. I don't need television that pisses me off and makes me sad, that's not what I watch television for. Fuck you Russell, I hope LA chews you up and spits you out and fucks you in the ass with a pointy stick.
- Ianto did make me happy for quite a few years, which is why I'm working on a last epic picspam of my favourite teaboy doing shit. I hope to have it done in a week or two.
- I'm also working on something of a personal project celebrating Torchwood Series One and Two, which I hope to tell you more about in the coming weeks. Or maybe I'll just abandon it.
- I was hoping to do a Christmas push on the Ianto Jones Wants a Pony campaign, but the Lluest Horse and Pony Trust's continued inability to update me is starting to annoy me a bit, so maybe I'll leave it. After Christmas, I'm done promoting it because I think I've done enough. I'll leave it up, of course.
- Any takers for
ninja_teaboy may give me shout here or in PM. I'm putting it up for adoption per January 1st. If there's no-one interested, I'll close it down.
- Oh, in case you were wondering, no. If there is a new series of Torchwood, I won't be watching it, as I don't really like Gwen, or Jack. I liked Tosh and Ianto and I quite enjoyed disliking Owen. I liked Ianto, I liked Tosh, I liked the Hub, the embossed SUV, the pteranodon, the old ladies, the poodles, the victorian lesbianism, the cyberbikinis and that stupid fucking invisible lift. In fact, I loved all those things. Apparently I loved those things far too much. Those things are all gone, so there's nothing for me to come back to. Not that there will be a new series.
- It's been really fun, people, but if you've friended me for Torchwood content, please, feel free to defriend me in the coming weeks, I won't be offended. I am completely spent. Done. Thanks, Rusty.

BTW - I'm obviously a interweb luddite as I didn't even know you could ban someone from posting to your journal!

Will the last one to leave, turn out the light?
Interesting to read some of the comments to the article - the depressingly usual arguments of "you're wrong and I'm right" and split right down the line - there are no grey areas in terms of loving or hating CoE.
Rusty wrote a money spinner for Aunty Beeb in the form of CoE so they'll let him play with his toys again, even if he breaks some of them. The fan's reaction to CoE is neither here nor there for them, if they lose some fans then they'll gain some more. As long as TW continues to get good ratings and sell well overseas then it'll get comissioned.

Date: 2009-11-15 12:31 pm (UTC)FWIW, that's happened to me too. The general advice to me was to ask them why, but I was too much of a wuss to do so. I finally worked out that I'd been banned in solidarity; I had offended a good friend of theirs and my apology was accepted by neither.

I'm with you there too. However, I still have producers that I loathe far more than RTD, and I have great hopes for the Moffat seasons, so I'm viewing the last three RTD episodes mostly as things that must be dealt with before the fun begins.
I hope LA chews you up and spits you out
Did he actually go after all that? I got the impression that his move to LA was much like the reported TW S4; *he* talks about it, but there's no empirical evidence.

From:the part where I ramble... don't mind me.
Date: 2009-11-15 01:26 pm (UTC)I'll always wonder if "Torchwood" could've survived longer had it had an overarching story and better writers. "Supernatural" reminds me of TW a lot. it's got a pretty flimsy premise, one that allows it to be a one year show every year (I think it's lived on the brink of cancellation for most of its life), but it's always got an arc that spans the year but (at least until recently) hasn't ended in a cliffhanger, so if the show got canceled it would be okay. (holy run-on sentences, Batman!) they also have the requisite monster-of-the-week episodes. if only someone like Kripke could take over TW, or remake it, I'll bet it would be a show we could enjoy and have for several years. but... we'll never know...
as for wishing to have never seen "Torchwood," I can't imagine feeling that way. I'd have never fallen for Ianto and that was worth it, even with his sucky death.
Re: the part where I ramble... don't mind me.
Date: 2009-11-15 04:06 pm (UTC)Probably. One of things I've always disliked about Torchwood is that each series (and even episodes) seemed to take place vacuum; when Mary was gotten rid of Tosh being a lesbian was never mentioned again (I'll never forgive them for that one), Billis just disappeared and what happened to The Sleepers again? That's just sloppy writing.
'if only someone like Kripke could take over TW, or remake it, I'll bet it would be a show we could enjoy and have for several years.'
I second that. It would give his 'gay love can save the world' line a whole new meaning! :D

Date: 2009-11-15 02:43 pm (UTC)I totally feel your TW/Rusty hate. You said it so much better than I could, but it pisses me off to no end that he can use precious TV time and money to wallow in his own misery. At least I have no desire whatsoever to watch any more of his crap. Lucky for me I never watched DW.

Date: 2009-11-15 03:43 pm (UTC)Same here. I stuck with Torchwood because I had hoped the writing would get better, but now that RTD has proven he can't even keep one plotline from having massive plotholes (and he has to resort to killing characters off to cover them up said plot holes) a series 4 just leaves me going MEH. I have better things to do with my time than watch a badly written, depressing sci-fi show that may or may not have nothing but straight relationships in it; Jack/Ianto never seemed nearly as important to RTD as Gwen/Rhys or even Gwen/Jack. If anything, Jack/Ianto mostly seemed like an afterthought.
'Ianto did make me happy for quite a few years, which is why I'm working on a last epic picspam of my favourite teaboy doing shit. I hope to have it done in a week or two.'
Good luck.

Date: 2009-11-15 04:39 pm (UTC)I have more faith in Moffat than I probably should, but he wrote my all time favorite feel-good Who ending ("Everybody lives Rose! Just this once, everybody lives!"), and it wasn't something he had the Doctor pull out of his ass in the last 15 minutes. I have to hope he won't suddenly go all CoE on us. Smith I know nothing about. I'm willing to give him a chance.
I may or may not bother to
illegally download andwatch this past, and the last, Doctor Who special. I really don't need any more DW/TW downers right now.Re: Russell and TW S4
RTD does seem to be ruthlessly self-promoting the idea of S4. Based on the rumors, it'll be recycling ideas that were already used in the first two seasons, things that shouldn't be a part of a post-CoE Torchwood. (I'm thinking, specifically, about a mention of Jack's frozen-in-the-blown-up-hub brother.) And people who claimed CoE was head and shoulders above anything TW that came before it are eating it up. I just don't understand.
Re: Ianto
Still love him. Can't help it. I'll be waiting for that pic spam. Hope you don't mind if I hang around a bit longer.

Date: 2009-11-15 05:23 pm (UTC)I won't be following fandom like I used to though, especially with all the JB love that just goes on and on.
Apparently Gareth's told someone at a US convention this weekend that he auditioned for the same role that David Tennant has now got in this US series and that he's proud to have even been considered for the part. There could be life in the young boy yet. :)

Date: 2009-11-16 02:22 am (UTC)Same here. I know quite a few authors who left the fandom. Although if I'm completely honest with myself, I've left it too; I can't remember the last time I read TW fic or even post anything Torchwood related. *sigh*

Date: 2009-11-16 04:12 pm (UTC)I will probably just skip the last two DW specials and hope for the best with Moffat.
Its a shame that TW fiction seems to be tailing off at an alarming rate - the only reason I'd be interested in S4 would be see rewrites the episodes (or ideas from the episodes) with Tosh, Owen and Ianto.
Thanks RTD, you've not only managed to kill my love for TW, you've significantly decreased my interest in DW and anything JB does.

Date: 2009-11-16 08:44 pm (UTC)tencrush, I'm not defriending you. I do talk about a lot of fannish stuff, and I won't be hurt if you defriend me, but I think if a fandom isn't joyful for you anymore, it's time to back away or find something else you like doing.

Date: 2009-11-17 10:33 pm (UTC)I really hope you hang around long enough to enjoy some schadenfreude when RTD gets shafted by the BBC, after all he did piss them all off, break all his toys, then run away.
Anyhow I would really like to friend you if you are dropping the comm, I see you have a volunteer to keep it going, but I definitely don't want to miss your predictions and rants.
My journal is all fannish really, so I don't expect you to friend back if you are dropping TW, although when I say fannish, I mean denial and cynicism.

Date: 2009-11-18 05:18 pm (UTC)I would love some schadenfreude where RTD is considered. I do have to wonder though, according to RTD series 4 is as good as produced (I just think he's talking out his hat), but I also heard that he burned a lot of bridges at the BBC and he loves being in America. He even went so far as to say that American writers are more professional than British ones (the British hang out in pubs all the time). I guess we'll just have to wait and see if he comes back. Personally the only way I would be interested in more TW is if he DIDN'T write it.

Date: 2009-11-21 12:56 am (UTC)Interestingly enough, I seem to be moving away from TW/Who roughly in tandem with your good self, even though I didn't bother watching the latest (especially since it would have required a download, and given your review & others, I decided to save my bandwidth).
Meanwhile, I've happily wandered over to Lewis. Pretty Oxford scenery, eye candy in the form of Kevin Whately (who still has damned good legs 20 years on) and Laurence Fox (who, it transpires, is married to Billie Piper. Six degrees & all that). Recommended for the slashiness alone. ;)
