Thanks to
sugarberi for the link. Anyone who'd enjoy listening to JB talk about himself for an hour, click away. Those who wouldn't, skip to ten minutes from the end for "You don't need Ianto you 6 hysterical women, you. I can be Ianto, too! I'm just as good as Ianto, watch it for MEEEE!" "It" being a future series of Torchwood that John sounds very very uncertain about.
ETA: This is my favourite bit: "Come back and watch and see what's going to happen because I know you love Ianto, but I'd like to think and I'd like to hope that part of that relationship was because you also liked what Jack brought to it." What's that, that slutty-boss-fucks-emotionally-vulnerable-employee vibe? Nah, not so much, John. Not so much.
(Also: If Rusty's passive-aggressive dismissals are what pass for "eloquence" in JB's world, I really do feel like he should get out more.)

Date: 2009-09-24 01:40 pm (UTC)Yeah, John, we did (at least I did) like your half of the Janto pairing. But you with some new guy - I don't think so (OK, I'll admit, I could make an exception if it were Captain John). But then we'd have to call that pairng CaCa. Fitting some how.
I started watching TW because of the Captain Jack character. But JB should let others do the selling of a new pairing - he's hitting some off notes on this topic already and the more he says, the less I'm liking it.

Date: 2009-09-24 08:35 pm (UTC)Poor JB, it must be incomprehensible to him how fans could like somebody else more than him! And has he realised yet that his BFF Rusty totally made CoE as a vehicle for Myles?

Date: 2009-09-24 08:44 pm (UTC)I detected a note of pleading in JB's 'hey I was one half of the dynamic duo' comment.

Date: 2009-09-24 09:20 pm (UTC)Not looking like it. If Captain Jack comes back as a sidekick to Gwen, I'll wouldn't be surprised at all.

Date: 2009-09-25 01:18 am (UTC)Actually I do hope RTD and Julie over-ride BBC Wales (who will want to keep the bankable star) and make a EM vehicle out of Torchwood, because IMO it'll be a disaster of Bonekickers/Demons proportions. I think EM is a nice person, by the accounts of people who've met her, but she appears to have confused bugging out her eyes with acting. I don't think the actress or the character is strong enough to carry a series in which everyone else is a redshirt. She's not Helen Mirren and Gwen isn't Jane Tennison.

Date: 2009-09-25 10:12 am (UTC)Yep, assumption. He, um, hasn't considered that people just liked Ianto and don't actually give a toss about the relationship or Jack, huh? Haha.
(Actually I do like Jack. But less and less, lately. The lessening seems to be connected to Barrowman talking. Odd!)

Date: 2009-09-25 10:43 am (UTC)I think RTD & JB could be smarting because apparently Ianto was iced purely in service of JB's character. But then Ianto's death got too much attention and overshadowed too much of CoE (JB's performance & RTD's brilliant writing) with some fans, too many for RTD's and now JB's liking. They can't believe people are hung up on fifth stringer Ianto.

Date: 2009-09-25 10:49 am (UTC)D'you ever think that maybe what fans (*cough*) can't get over is the disconnect this shows? Maybe we can't believe they'd fail to get fandom to this extent.
Just a thought.

Date: 2009-09-25 01:37 pm (UTC)As I said above, JB would do well do STFU.
Maybe three years from now they could entice me back in (maybe). But every time they tell me that I'm just a lone voice in the wilderness, insult my intelligence and invalidate my feelings they piss me off all over again. Keep up the good work!
He's actually giving me John Edwards vibes! Seriously. He's like a guy who asks you to take him back while he's making a date with his new lover. Uh, no, don't think so JB.
RTD and JB could be poster children for the LOW EQ Club.

Date: 2009-09-26 07:46 am (UTC)I'm going to La Cage today, but you know they are now doing cheap deals to sell tickets, so I think again, very interesting and I wonder if the bitter edge is partly due to shock that it wasn't always about him?
He was only ever at the Hub on a Sunday, which is doable with his theatre, so I doubt it's that. I do think the interview says a lot, I am not saying for a minute that he would have a personal issue with GDL, because I imagine that he is a professional and they probably still are as close, but he may well be pissed off about the Ianto thing and how it has come back to bite them. Blaming the fans of course is stupid, we have a right to our feelings, but it seems as if he does.

Date: 2009-09-26 08:26 am (UTC)For example, "Of course we adored the actor who left but Ianto had to die! They die young at TW and if you can't handle that don't ever watch again because I'm The Decider and only my opinion matters you ming mong hysterical ding dongs.
How about a simple, it was (fill in the blank) working with GDL, he brought much to the role and the show. Burn and Naoko both got nice comments.
I'm sure they all respect & adore each other (in a showbiz way) but it makes me hope like hell GDL somehow makes it bigger beyond TW.

Date: 2009-09-26 09:17 am (UTC)I said this before, but I was at a huge industrial meeting recently. Some of the colleagues were really upset and angry about something. The response was "you really have a right to feel like that, we have decided to try and see what we can do" I think that kind of thing is the best response. Now nothing might change, but the workers felt heard, that's what you do. In the case of Ianto, even to say something like GDL does "well it's sci fi, you never know" is the right thing to do. It's not giving false hope, because at the end of the day, of course it's possible. RTD is not the boss of the world, or of the BBC. If it never happens, well so be it.

Date: 2009-09-26 10:26 am (UTC)I'd love to know what is at the root of the way RTD & lately JB have been acting over the Ianto thing.

Date: 2009-09-26 08:12 pm (UTC)Different PR person??? This stuff they've come out with after CoE is obviously a line they've adopted, because they all say the same thing. After seeing that, and the fact that they all said the same thing after Series 2 about BG and NM, but what they all said then is completely different to what they all say now. IMHO the stuff they were saying after the end of series 2 was a line as well. Call me cynical.

Date: 2009-09-26 02:44 pm (UTC)Who knows, maybe John is learning that if you have difficulty self-censoring your feelings, it may be best to skip events where they may be displayed in a less than favorable light.
Ditto for GDL. If you find that your dick has a mind of its own at conventions and its getting you into trouble with your fiance (and you don't want that), then simply don't go to one without her or a trusted friend.
Cause alcohol + ego often = doing things you regret later.

Date: 2009-09-26 06:17 pm (UTC)I saw the Johnettes this afternoon at La Cage, my friend who isn't fannish at all couldn't get over them. She was asking me why women that age would be like that, which I can't answer, I like watching these people work, but I'm not even interested in an autograph. I only like to meet people who want to meet me. I absolutely love reading accounts of conventions and interviews etc, but I'm not bothered to go myself.

Date: 2009-09-26 10:18 pm (UTC)I'm a bit of a theater/live music performance junky and I love hearing performers (or directors, etc) talk about how they approach the creative process. And occasionally I've had the opportunity to discuss (mostly musicians)their interpretation of a work with them afterwards.
But the few times I've actually stood in line for an autograph (generally for authors at book signings, but also Colin Baker many yrs ago) I never know what to say and always feel like a twit afterwards. "Gee Mr, Ms....I really like your work!" So now I just go to the book reading, enjoy what the author has to say and GO HOME.
