Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sugarberi for the link. Anyone who'd enjoy listening to JB talk about himself for an hour, click away. Those who wouldn't, skip to ten minutes from the end for "You don't need Ianto you 6 hysterical women, you. I can be Ianto, too! I'm just as good as Ianto, watch it for MEEEE!" "It" being a future series of Torchwood that John sounds very very uncertain about.

ETA: This is my favourite bit: "Come back and watch and see what's going to happen because I know you love Ianto, but I'd like to think and I'd like to hope that part of that relationship was because you also liked what Jack brought to it." What's that, that slutty-boss-fucks-emotionally-vulnerable-employee vibe? Nah, not so much, John. Not so much.

(Also: If Rusty's passive-aggressive dismissals are what pass for "eloquence" in JB's world, I really do feel like he should get out more.)

I was just wondering what he'd said (based on a comment someone made in my journal). Thanks for posting this.

Heh, I just d/loaded this. I was wondering what some people were upset about in this interview. Now I see, LOL. Is that an exact quote in the 1st paragraph or are you paraphrasing? I guess I'll find out. Well, I still love Jack, so I will watch it for him, if there's more.

Well, I skipped to the last 10 minutes or so. Wow, he's really selling the CJ + new fuck toy concept isn't he?

Yeah, John, we did (at least I did) like your half of the Janto pairing. But you with some new guy - I don't think so (OK, I'll admit, I could make an exception if it were Captain John). But then we'd have to call that pairng CaCa. Fitting some how.

I started watching TW because of the Captain Jack character. But JB should let others do the selling of a new pairing - he's hitting some off notes on this topic already and the more he says, the less I'm liking it.

Considering what else he say about his schedule, I don't think we'll see TW with him in it before 2012. And it's such a stock answer if I ever hear one or at least it gives me feelings of telephone "heard from X who heard from yada yada".

Well it's JB; don't expect any pearls of wisdom to come out of his mouth.
Poor JB, it must be incomprehensible to him how fans could like somebody else more than him! And has he realised yet that his BFF Rusty totally made CoE as a vehicle for Myles?

From: [identity profile] aviv-b.livejournal.com
Yes, this. I think RTD could care less whether JB is part of his new great show as long as EM is the star. Whenever, whatever that will be.

I detected a note of pleading in JB's 'hey I was one half of the dynamic duo' comment.

Not looking like it. If Captain Jack comes back as a sidekick to Gwen, I'll wouldn't be surprised at all.

BFF - Best Friend Forever? I think the only BFF Rusty has is a mirror. And who else is going to big up Torchwood in the British press besides JB? I don't think Eve Myles has done a public appearance since July, has she?

Actually I do hope RTD and Julie over-ride BBC Wales (who will want to keep the bankable star) and make a EM vehicle out of Torchwood, because IMO it'll be a disaster of Bonekickers/Demons proportions. I think EM is a nice person, by the accounts of people who've met her, but she appears to have confused bugging out her eyes with acting. I don't think the actress or the character is strong enough to carry a series in which everyone else is a redshirt. She's not Helen Mirren and Gwen isn't Jane Tennison.

I can't actually listen to this. Did someone actually mention the relationship, or is that JB's assumption that all everyone cares about in regards to Ianto is that relationship with Jack?

Date: 2009-09-25 05:48 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sugarberi.livejournal.com
Here's the quick notes version: (sounding very put out and dismissive) "Yeah......, RTD put it so eloquently, 6! coffee packets, people will be vocal about it online and won't do anything, vocal minority, I understand the fans love Ianto, I love Ianto, Jack loves Ianto, BUT people die young, shit happens, for story to progress something drastic had to happen, (and unfortunately it was Ianto), Um..... RTD says-- I'm only quoting-- Ianto WILL NOT come back, (now back to soft sad tone in his voice) Decision made, sticking to it. What would be exciteing for Me AKA Capt Jack, you peeps upset, Come Back. Come back and watch it, I know you love Ianto, but I like to think/hope part of that relation ship was what Jack brought to it. And there will be new relationships developed. Ianto will always be a big part of Ianto's personality so you might see some of Ianto in Jack, no pun intended.

They really should of stuck with the, pretend you're really going to miss the characters and actors, and you're as upset as the fans line, they went with at the end of season 2. :)

Well I messed up that last bit. He said Ianto will always be a big part of Jack's personality. (a WTF? to me). Then the bit about Ianto being in Jack, "no pun intended" but he didn't laugh at his joke which was unusual so I think he was still a little worked up over it.

But if they're at the Hub together I'm sure it will be back to the lovey-dovey.

Thanks for that.

Yep, assumption. He, um, hasn't considered that people just liked Ianto and don't actually give a toss about the relationship or Jack, huh? Haha.

(Actually I do like Jack. But less and less, lately. The lessening seems to be connected to Barrowman talking. Odd!)

I'm disappointed Ianto didn't get any big storylines (aside from being with Jack). The character was what moved me from a casual viewer to glued to tube/purchasing dvds.

I think RTD & JB could be smarting because apparently Ianto was iced purely in service of JB's character. But then Ianto's death got too much attention and overshadowed too much of CoE (JB's performance & RTD's brilliant writing) with some fans, too many for RTD's and now JB's liking. They can't believe people are hung up on fifth stringer Ianto.

D'you ever think that maybe what fans (*cough*) can't get over is the disconnect this shows? Maybe we can't believe they'd fail to get fandom to this extent.

Just a thought.

JB seems to be missing the point that yes, he was 1/2 of the Janto couple. But without Ianto THERE IS NO JANTO! So you're half of nothing now, JB.

As I said above, JB would do well do STFU.

Maybe three years from now they could entice me back in (maybe). But every time they tell me that I'm just a lone voice in the wilderness, insult my intelligence and invalidate my feelings they piss me off all over again. Keep up the good work!

He's actually giving me John Edwards vibes! Seriously. He's like a guy who asks you to take him back while he's making a date with his new lover. Uh, no, don't think so JB.

RTD and JB could be poster children for the LOW EQ Club.

It's very interesting that he has cancelled his appearance at the Hub. I really do wonder if he can bear the possibility of the GDL being more popular, well at least his character. I get a sense of him really not coping with that.

From: [identity profile] aviv-b.livejournal.com
I was thinking exactly the same thing. I was shocked when GDL wasn't initially invited. The fact that he was after CoE aired speaks to his popularity. (Hey, ocnventions are all about $ from the producers' point of view).

But more likely its a case of too many committments in too little time. Is it just me, or had JB been shilling himself anywhere and everywhere lately?

Oh he always does that. He opens fetes etc. The thing is, I can't remember if you live in the UK, but there are so often jokes on radio and telly about how he is everywhere. When he did the proms with Barry Manilow, on the Monday Terry Wogan's radio show had all the LOL's with people emailing in to say they thought John Barrowman must have retired as they hadn't seen him in 24 hours and then he appeared at the proms.

I'm going to La Cage today, but you know they are now doing cheap deals to sell tickets, so I think again, very interesting and I wonder if the bitter edge is partly due to shock that it wasn't always about him?

He was only ever at the Hub on a Sunday, which is doable with his theatre, so I doubt it's that. I do think the interview says a lot, I am not saying for a minute that he would have a personal issue with GDL, because I imagine that he is a professional and they probably still are as close, but he may well be pissed off about the Ianto thing and how it has come back to bite them. Blaming the fans of course is stupid, we have a right to our feelings, but it seems as if he does.

For me a very simple acknowledgment of Gareth's contribution to TW from either RTD or JB would go a long way. And I don't mean one made just as an aside in defense of The Decision, because those are the only ones I've heard about.

For example, "Of course we adored the actor who left but Ianto had to die! They die young at TW and if you can't handle that don't ever watch again because I'm The Decider and only my opinion matters you ming mong hysterical ding dongs.

How about a simple, it was (fill in the blank) working with GDL, he brought much to the role and the show. Burn and Naoko both got nice comments.

I'm sure they all respect & adore each other (in a showbiz way) but it makes me hope like hell GDL somehow makes it bigger beyond TW.

Yes exactly that. I think the thing is that Burn and Naoko didn't get this fan reaction. They are very bitter about it, but making it worse. Was is JB doing with that interview? It was a massive fuck up on their part to kill Ianto. Stupid. Really. To kill the other two was bad enough, but I think everyone gave the benefit of the doubt. Then they go and kick us while down? Mad.

I said this before, but I was at a huge industrial meeting recently. Some of the colleagues were really upset and angry about something. The response was "you really have a right to feel like that, we have decided to try and see what we can do" I think that kind of thing is the best response. Now nothing might change, but the workers felt heard, that's what you do. In the case of Ianto, even to say something like GDL does "well it's sci fi, you never know" is the right thing to do. It's not giving false hope, because at the end of the day, of course it's possible. RTD is not the boss of the world, or of the BBC. If it never happens, well so be it.

There was a snippet that aired on BBCA during Exit Wounds of Burn saying you never know, maybe Owen escaped out the sewer and will come back as king of the weevils. I knew it was BS but still, it made me smile.

I'd love to know what is at the root of the way RTD & lately JB have been acting over the Ianto thing.

Different PR person??? This stuff they've come out with after CoE is obviously a line they've adopted, because they all say the same thing. After seeing that, and the fact that they all said the same thing after Series 2 about BG and NM, but what they all said then is completely different to what they all say now. IMHO the stuff they were saying after the end of series 2 was a line as well. Call me cynical.

No - I'm a US person, Chicago in fact, so I had a ring side seat to the Torchsong debacle. (Turned out I couldn't go due to a family committment, but in retrospect, I am sooo glad I couldn't). But I did get to learn all about the Johnettes!

Who knows, maybe John is learning that if you have difficulty self-censoring your feelings, it may be best to skip events where they may be displayed in a less than favorable light.

Ditto for GDL. If you find that your dick has a mind of its own at conventions and its getting you into trouble with your fiance (and you don't want that), then simply don't go to one without her or a trusted friend.

Cause alcohol + ego often = doing things you regret later.

Mmm interesting point and yes, that may well be why he isn't going. As to GDL, I'm still not convinced about that rumour, for various reasons. It did bother me a lot, mainly because I really hate how people are over that stuff. If it is true, then yes it's stupid, but true or not, what i really hate is how those types of things end up back at home via the internet before he does. Now as you say, maybe trouble with the fiancee, but more importantly, what about his sisters, his fiancees parents, the neighbours. Believe me i have friends in that part of Wales, and the gossip I have heard about people I have only ever met the one time, it spreads like mad. That makes me deeply uncomfortable, and even more so if it was a stupid rumour spread by a girl that may have had a grope. (I was very suspicious when I looked at that twitter, her profile was out of work actress, I really don't trust it)

I saw the Johnettes this afternoon at La Cage, my friend who isn't fannish at all couldn't get over them. She was asking me why women that age would be like that, which I can't answer, I like watching these people work, but I'm not even interested in an autograph. I only like to meet people who want to meet me. I absolutely love reading accounts of conventions and interviews etc, but I'm not bothered to go myself.

Date: 2009-09-26 10:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] aviv-b.livejournal.com
Never understood fannish stuff myself. Probably why I don't get the RP fics that people write.

I'm a bit of a theater/live music performance junky and I love hearing performers (or directors, etc) talk about how they approach the creative process. And occasionally I've had the opportunity to discuss (mostly musicians)their interpretation of a work with them afterwards.

But the few times I've actually stood in line for an autograph (generally for authors at book signings, but also Colin Baker many yrs ago) I never know what to say and always feel like a twit afterwards. "Gee Mr, Ms....I really like your work!" So now I just go to the book reading, enjoy what the author has to say and GO HOME.

Oh yes, me too. I just watch them work, as in the theatre, reading, performance whatever. That's what I'm there for. The only time I bother with getting a book signed is for a gift, but yes, you feel like a twat and also realise they are very bored and just doing it because, well, it's their job! I can't be bothered with that. I had an epiphany once, I went to see Stephen Fry speak about a novel of his, and he said something very interesting, I asked him to sign my copy for my sister, and made a comment about the interesting thing (which I now can't remember) anyhow he was very dismissive. I realised that of course he does not give a toss about what I think. Why should he? I know quite a few performers, and I know that the stage door thing is seen as tedious and they just want to get home, but they of course have that dilemma of needing the fans and being grateful to them as well.

Seriously, what Jack brought to the relationship?? Nope, I'm pretty sure the thing that most people loved was what Ianto (and only Ianto) brought to the relationship. Jack was always the non-committal dick. I hated Jack the first time I saw him in 'Who and I only softened toward him as a result of Nine and Rose's relationship with him. It was the same with Ianto. Jack is a humourless tool. For me, the only thing that worked for Torchwood is that most people could love at least one of the characters, and that would be enough to keep them watching. That character was Ianto for me. The plots were crap, the writing weak as fuck. Sorry John, I'm out.
