The news that Torchwood's been renewed, though wholly expected, has still managed to upset me more than I thought it would. Huh.

Feeling a bit mixed about it myself. I have hope they'll fix some things....but this is RTD, so not holding out much hope.

Well, unless everybody is lying, they won't fix the one thing that sucks the most--no Ianto. :( JB supposedly said "Gareth is gone." Yeah, I know, I know...but it's still not nice to hear. :( Especially if the show is coming back for another 13-episode series. Why couldn't the three team members that launched Torchwood on BBC1 all make it to the new series??

I should just stop reading the reports and interviews because, yes, everything is still so upsetting. Every time I think I'm finally over it, they pull me back in...

And it'll keep getting worse, as more and more details about the new season come out.

I intend to stay in denial-land. But, it'll get harder (to bear) as folks who were thrilled with CoE - and probably a good number of folks currently on the fence about it - start to get more excited about the new season (and, if they follow the pattern I've seen in other fandoms, they'll start to get more critical of anyone who continues to dislike the new developments but stay involved with fandom).

Yeah, it's all a very depressing prospect. :(

That's why I tend to stay of the fringes of fandom. My real life is full of drama, I don't need it in my on-line life.

Watching series 4 go into production is going to be just as hard to cope with as Ianto's actual death, especially as more and more fans start to get excited about the new series. Like someone else has said, I'll feel like an ex-wife who's been traded for someone young and fresh.

If Gareth gets another significant role when he returns to America next year, I might just be able to watch series 4 with a degree of interest but I certainly won't be buying the dvd.

Actually, seeing Jack get a new love interest will be harder to watch than 'The Gwen and Rhys show' because at that moment, Ianto really will be dead and gone.

I'd like to have seen RTD get kicked in the teeth with no renewal but other than that it doesn't bother me as it's just some show I have no interest in that has no relationship to the real Torchwood other than the name.

well of course, they haven't announced who's going to be running the show yet.
Although the fact that it was a BBCA source that revealed it makes me think that it's going to be Torchwood USA with all new characters.

Repeating myself from another journal:

It's been announced that there's going to be a Torchwood S4. It's been announced that RTD is moving to Hollywood. Everything that made Torchwood unique from Doctor Who (although Torchwood was the more popular show in America) has been removed from the premise.

How these three statements are going to be reconciled is beyond me.

I do know that I don't intend to watch it.

I'm excited for series 4, if only so I can see what fandom does with the new canon; I could care less what the 'real' Torchwood writers do with it. What would be the point of becoming invested in characters that RTD will probably kill off just because he feels like it when he wants to be dark and 'real'.

As Rusty said in one interview, he's already in the USA (and moved his furniture!), and he's just going to write for a while. Did anyone believe that? He wouldn't have moved lock, stock and barrel if he didn't have something already lined up. So no surprise there.

It'll be Jack's Angels starring Mommy Gwen (magically transformed from promiscuous Gwen due to her baby), Jailbait Habiba, and tired, old Emma Peel Johnson).

First order of business, Eve's gonna need to get at least 20 lbs off her pre-baby weight, and Jeez, Emma will need some serious botox treatments - there are no females with wrinkles on TV in the US unless they are grandmothers or Animal Planet is doing a special on Sharpei's. And Jailbait will have to stress in several epsiodes that she is over 21.

I like JB, but not enough to watch a show like that. But I'm sure it'll be a rousing success for the 15-35 yr old straight male video game playing crowd (upper income too cause they or more likely, their parents have to be able to afford a top tier cable package). Oh joy, because there isn't anything else for those poor socially inept boys to watch.

Yup, trying to pick up BSG's audience. They're going to need a lot more female eyecandy than Eve and Cush Jumbo though, because Eve is short, pudgy and has funny teeth to American standards. And who will be the studly hetero boys? Jamie Bamber's off with Freema in Law and Order UK.

Somewhere in my head I was hoping that season 3 would be the last. Now I don't care and I don't want to see it. ESPECIALLY if it takes places in America (as some people have said). What's so original about it anymore? It's going to be like any other American show that has a secret origination that tracks down aliens. X-Files 2.0 anyone?

Torchwood was the only TV show left that I watched, now I don't care to watch anymore. Oh, well I guess I'll have one less thing to distract me in my life. A part of me wishes I could be happy about season 4, but after season 3 it has left me with an empty feeling.

Season 4 can go on, but here is one person in Canada that will NOT be watching it. For me Torchwood ended with season 2.

I sort of want to write RTD an extremely snarky letter congradulating him on his future success at the expense of everything that made Torchwood Torchwood. This is a recession economy, and you've got to know what to do to make success, and, let's face it, the market for S1 and S2 style Torchwood was pretty much at it's limit. Capturing the post-BSG crowd right now is a smart thing to do, economically, and I'm sure it'll play out very well for him.

It just hit me. Now I know why I'm so infuriated about this whole thing.

See I thought I was buying a couture TV - a finely hand-tailored metrosexual slash suit with a sohpisticated snark cut.

Then after I bought it, I looked inside the lining and discovered that it was really a Debenham's off-the-rack made in China, polyester suit complete with the guns & tits logo.

Here's the thing: I invested myself emotionally in Torchwood - all of them with all their faults. Now they are dead, literally and figuratively.

I have no interest in a Gwen show. None. And why would I get emotionally invested in a show and a cast if they're going to be killed off to make way for others.

It doesn't have to be macho and edgy, although that was nice - it just has to be reasonably thought out scifi. That's all I want. That's all. Eye candy (tm) is also acceptable, but the eye candy has to hold my attention.

Since there is a series 4, my mantra will be 'fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, I ain't watching.

Just sayin'.

Exactly. While I like the CH character Owen and Ianto were my favorites. Tosh/Susie/Jack ran third and Gwen - a distant, distant last place.

Now if they had introduced Gwen as a gun-toting, ass-kicking hottie, I probably wouldn't have minded but now she's clearly established in my mind as a nosy, self-important, nobody with limited abilities.

I don't care how pretty the new characters are, I cannot watch the Gwen & Jack show.

I think they'll try to split the difference. Filmed in London, cause that's where the babes are, but with an American sensibility (e.g. no camp, no gay, no snark, but lots of female T & A).

Oh, and apparently children being tortured and bleeding out of every orifice will be OK as well. But for goodness sake, NO NAKED MANTUSH!!!

I'm so angry and annoyed with RTD I can hardly speak. I'm not a moron, I'm not irrational, I was invested in this series, and I understand that TW is dark and everyone dies young. And I respect that killing Ianto was RTD's decision to make, even though I think it was the easiest and frankly, most "fuck you" thing he could ever do to the Janto fans. We clearly bug the shit out of him.

But the amused, condescending, dismissive tone that I've seen in his recent interviews, including the blog I read today from Comic Con, just confirm that he hates us; we are the ultimate suckers for letting his talent suck us in and then when he kicks us around, we keep coming back for more.

He said in one interview that "of course Jack will be back" in the next series of TW. And he'll write a whole bunch of new characters - I assume complex, interesting, intelligent characters for us to love, and then lose. Because TW is dark, blah blah blah. Why on earth would I put myself through all of this again? I just hope people who feel like I do don't reward RTD's treatment of us by continuing to watch. And I suppose I should thank him for at least being honest enough about how he feels that I can't fool myself anymore that something might get fixed in the future. I doubt there'll be a "Ianto 2" for Jack like there was for Rose at the end of Who4. So I'm done with the show. But I'll stay in the fandom; I'll be damned if I let him run me off of this great community, especially when there are people like you guys to make me feel like I'm not alone. :-)

Word word word.
Why bother getting emotionally invested in characters that are going to be killed off (unless their name is Gwen of course)

Hell, why bother watching a show that's most likely going to rip your heart out and stomp on it and not even give you any little sense of hope at the end.
