I don't have anything to say about RTD's smug cunt interview of smug cuntery because I think the guy's a mediocre writer and a smug, self-absorbed prick. But I ALREADY THOUGHT THAT before I read this, so it's not really news.

Anyway, I hear things sometimes and I hear he's broken Who. I hear he's resurrecting the Time Lords simply because he knows Moffat hates the Time Lords and doesn't want to deal with Time Lord shit, so he's gone there for luls to piss Moffat off. He's also mentioned in an interview that the events of TW:CoE are NOT mentioned in the Who special that Jack is in. If that SURPRISES YOU, then I really think you should rethink what kind of writer you think RTD is. The correct answer is: a shit one.

Here ends the lesson for today.

I made it this far: There’s a risk that some people won’t come back to watch now that Ianto’s gone.

I guess he's cool with 90% of the fandom leaving and never coming back. bully for Russell! he's such a moron.

Actually, he probably is. 'Fandom' makes up a very small percentage of 6m viewers. 'Fandom-only-in-it-for-the-Janto' is an ever smaller percentage.

Man's got a bad case of Torch the Franchise and Run. Not to mention True Art Is Angsty and Death is Good Drama.

I'm voting with my American, BBCA-watching remote. Yes, Russell, we can bite you in the ass...by not watching. Our "typing" aside. (Who's he think he is, Truman Capote?)

At least he has the good taste to think that Sam'n'Dean are smokin'.

Asshole.

I was wondering what you'd think about that SPN line, Andreth, LOL. (I did get a chuckle out of his Wincest glee, I have to admit).

I did not think that interview helped matters any with the fans. He WAS very cunty and I could just see him in my mind's eye grinning and laughing the whole time.

I wasn't really offended by his other interviews but now, having read this one, I'm kind of insulted.

These latest interviews really show what an utter cunt that man is, especially if you consider that the only one who's trying to calm the fans ATM is Gareth.

Hearing Russell Cunt Davies dismissing even the remote possibility of a return of Ianto in a future series after Gareth (and John also) said things along the lines of 'it's sci-fi, trust the writers, you never know', really it's grating.

I guess he's just making a point out of it now, right? And the more fans complain the more he shows how and arsehole he is.

I only hope he gets what he deserves at CC.

Yup, he's that big of an arrogant asshole, he talks about DW fans the same way. What is currently driving me nuts is that no one is confronting him at all about how derivative and predictable the story was in CoE. Not one interviewer is familiar enough with Quatermass to point out all the similarities? Also, why can't the people who liked CoE actually defend that opinion with something more substantial than: But Ianto HAD to die and But it's really really popular. Don't moan on about how brilliant it is without responding to the people pointing out the big giant plotholes, inconsistent characterization and copied elements.

And I would love to be a fly on the wall at BBC Wales, who seem to have been screwed over royally, as one of their most successful shows moves to the States where somehow Julie and RTD are still in charge of TW and making decisions about s4. Julie's the one who approved a version of TW that ditches the set and most of the cast and then went to Los Angeles.

RTD's a big ol' giant, giggling liar. I don't believe most of what comes out of his mouth as he's gone around in the past contradicting himself up the wazoo.

I seem to recall him saying 'oh no no it's a totally coincidence that Eve played Gwyneth in DW 1x02' and how it'd never be brought up but then it was for the lulz in the season 4 finale. Or how Rose would stay gone. Or whatever else he decides to put on a banner and wave about at the moment.

Also, whuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut on CoE just being etch-e-sketched away for DW? How're they gonna explain Jack being there then? Will Gwen's magic bring him back and he'll have gone on some brain sucking vacation that noms away dark thoughts of button-nosed Welsh lads who are photographed with giant guns but don't actually get to use them?

I hope one of your regulars here will let us know what's happening at ComicCon. Inquiring minds really want to know.

I think if you really believe in your story, you should be prepared to explain your artistic choices. The worst thing for me about this whole train wreck is that RTD is so dismissive of the S1 & S2 fans. To me a class act would have said that they appreciate the fans, feel their pain, etc, but I wanted to explore other ideas.

But he got caught with his artistic pants down (retread story, big plot holes, pissed off fans) and so like the little boy he is he gets pissy. Heh, being an American, I can tell you that RTD better put his bigboy pants on because he's not playing by UK rules anymore.

Oh, and I really, really hope he does another lift from someone else's work who is not BBC affiliated. See in the US we don't have a loser pays all, limited liability type of legal system. And in the entertainment industry, intellectual property theft suits are common, very common and can cost a studio gazillions of dollars (regardless of whether they have any actual merit).

And can you imagine just how RTD's hissy fits would play before a judge or an American jury?

Yeah, well, I actually read that in the middle of work. Followed by walking out of the office, and trying very hard not to scream. I mean, yeah, nothing new in the interview, we already knew he doesn't fucking care about anything but writing what he wants, but it still annoys me as hell the lack of respect he has for the fans, who, after all, put him where he is.

Both JB and GDL (and probably the rest of the cast - well, most of them any way), even though I can't recall specific interviews now, have, at some point or another, repeatedly, and wihtout prompting, thanked the fans, because they are where they are and who they are professionaly because of the fans, and so on, and so forth, and things like "the fans are amazing, the things they do, they are there at horrible times in the morning when we are filming just to catch a glimpse of it" (paraphrasing here) have been said. So, obviously, certain people realise that fans play a part in all this showbiz thing. Others, unfortunately, seem to not want to notice...

I think you are wrong.
I don't think RTD is a shit writer .....
I don't think you should limit RTD being (a) shit to just his writing.
RTD is a shit, simply because he is breathing.
And he seems to be testing the unlimited boundaries of his shittedness.
I can't help but wonder, as the fan fallout continues, if Barrowman still worships at RTD's arse as he has done these past 3 years, or if he is/has distanced himself even slightly now because of the fallout. John does like to be worshiped by his fans after all.

JB does seem to be emphasizing how he leaves the writing up to the writers and how he's just the actor. I think that he is much more aware of the fanbase and knows which side his bread is buttered on (and i'm sure Jack would think that a euphemism for something or other)

There's an afterelton.com interview with GDL which has been posted recently, where he mentions that JB was initially a little bit "OMG, they're killing Ianto???".
I'm wondering if that's what JB was referring to when he said something along the lines of how there was something he could have dug his heels in over, but he didn't.

It would be very easy to have Jack in the specials and not mention Torchwood.

Doctor "Jack, long time no see. How long has it been now?"
Jack "Oh about 10,000 years, give or take a century"

See, 10,000 9,999 years will heal a lot of wounds and lose a lot of memories, but will still leave plenty of gaps for Jack to have adventures and shoot stuff in the face and recover from losing dead lovers/grandsons.

This just in: Monday's episode had 1.4 million viewers which is a record for BBCA. But if you compare that to the July 8th launch on Scyfy channel of Warehouse 13 which got 3.5 million viewers it doesn't look so good. Sponge Bob got 5+ million viewers.

And TW had an established fan base in the US. Some of which won't be back for S4. Hmmm...hope RTD is renting, his tenure could be mightly short.

BTW - anyone know anything about Warehouse 13? It was almost 3xs as popular as TW, and if I'm going to watch crap, then I may as well watch popluar crap. Bonus points if its got sexy boys.

As for JB - that's an interesting question. He's very appreciative of his fans. And loyal to people like RTD who have helped his career. I read somewhere that he had turned down series work in the US (which pays a shit load more than what the BBC will) to stay available for the CJ role. It'll be too bad if his loyalty is repaid by RTD throwing him under the bus. But he can't say that he was surprised.

It's not half bad. It's sort of a mashup of X-Files meets Friday the 13th the Series, but with actual production values and (in the case of the latter) actual plot.

I hear he's resurrecting the Time Lords simply because he knows Moffat hates the Time Lords and doesn't want to deal with Time Lord shit, so he's gone there for luls to piss Moffat off.

Thing is, Moffat's an excellent writer, who is going to have 100% control over the franchise soon, which will allow him to handwave or retcon whatever he pleases.

Because there isn't enough righteous indignation in this thread yet: response to the article, and to the fans upset about the article, from the Who fanboys over at Gallifrey base: "Half a dozen overweight women weeping in the corridors and threatening to release protest records?" "Russell The Davies has spoken: link to the EW article Sums it up pretty well, I think" and "Indeed. Top one rusty." The last one is from the "host" of this particular thread, who is in his mid-forties, single, and built like a slitheen. The fact that a)there are enough of these fans to raise thousands of pounds for charity in a few days and make the BBC news and b)gay men form a substantial part of this group, to judge only by the comments over at afterelton escapes them.

As ceindreadh says in the comment above there's an interview with Gareth on AE, taken before today shit, in which he says:

AE: You may not be able to answer this, but is that even a possibility or did the writers say to you, "He's dead and gone and don't even think about coming back."
GDL: That hasn't been said to me. I can tell you that. What has been said to me is "Hey, it's sci-fi, anything can happen."

So apparently Rusty even lied to his actors.

And he also managed, in one move, to insult the fans, GDL and himself, by implying that we watched Torchwood only because there were pretty boys in it.

The man is a fucking genius.
