AAALOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!
Oh, Christ I am laughing myself TO DEATH as I type this. You're so crap at ending things, Russell, it's just... it's just too funny.

AH, DAY FIVE:
GRIMNESS, DEATH, GRIM, OMGFUCKINGGRIM, MORE GRIM, JESUS HOW MUCH GRIMMER CAN THIS GET WAIT... IT'S GETTING A BIT GRATUITOUSLY GRIM NOW... LOLMOMENT... MORE GRIM AAAAAANNNNNNNND FLY AWAY INTO THE SKY!!!

That is waht I just saw. (I'm a wee bit drunk.) I take it I'm probably going to have to watch it again because all I saw was Russell kicking us in THE FAYCE with OMGMELODRAMATIC grimness and despair for 45 minutes and then some lols happened. Or something.

On a serious note, lots of people were remarking yesterday about how Ianto dies to prove a point about the sacrifices Jack has to make because of his immortal emo manpain and shit. Now I already knew about Stephen, so I didn't want to harsh those people's buzz or anything, but seriously, how many times do we have to prove the thing about Jack's immortal manpain in the space of, say 70-odd minutes? What was the point of Ianto dying again? I've forgotten. See, I'd have cared about Ianto's family just as much had he stayed alive, so that wasn't it, and apart from that... nah, I got nothing.

And then Jack flew away and I laughed and laughed and laughed at how Russell had made me care about this bullshit.

*waves at Jack*
Don't let the door hit your arse on the way out, now.

I'll make more sense when I'm sober, I promise

ETA:You know what made me laugh the most yesterday, was all these Janto fans who used that teary Jack icon from the Day Five trailer because they thought he might be crying over Ianto. I REALLY DIDN'T HAVE THE HEART TO TELL THEM. I'm rly sorry about that, guys.

Okay, so it's going to be HOURS before this thing is up and I can get it downloaded...

They brought him BACK? And killed him AGAIN?!?

Okay, cause that would have been ridiculous. (I had to stop myself saying "overkill.")

But still totally dead, yes? No miraculous last-minute save?

Nope. Dead as a dodo, only he used to be hot.

So, we either get the kumbaya moment of Journey's End, or we get "How much emotional damage can one immortal sustain and still be classified as human?" KTHNXBYE!!

SIGH.

It makes sense now (although I'm not completely sober either)

We lost Ianto so he could be the warm up act for Jack's Family manpain?!?

No. Words.

It was so us Ianto fans would get some perspective on it. Stop overreacting! Jack just lost his frickin' grandson (who's had a total of 5 minutes screentime), for gawd's sake!!!

Aw, bless you. I'm a bit drunk as well (I fucking love you etc etc) and I think that's probably why I shed a tear at the end (I can't actually remember when, but I think I was feeling Alice's pain). Ultimately, it's ended and I'm really not arsed one way or another, I suppose.

I didn't watch it. Felt somewhat meh after yesterday. Not upset just 'why bother'? May watch later.

Over-riding emotion from tonight: APATHY.

Oh, look, Gwen and Jack are not going to make the Jack-and-Gwen show. I can't even be glad about that.

Torchwood love affair: officially over. Dead as Ianto.

Hell, if they HAD to kill Ianto, I'm glad they went ahead and (figuratively) killed Jack too.

I really don't see a TWS04 that I would watch coming out of this.

Would couldn't Jack zap both of them out of there? "See ya, Earth! We're outta here! Uh...Gwen? Baby gift is in the mail..." Then we might've gotten our Ianto and the Doctor scene. *pouts*

Other than birthing a convenient grandson for Jack to use as a human sacrifice, what was the point of the character Alice??
And I must say Lucy Cohu (the actress) was completely wasted in this role. She had the same slightly startled and mad look in her eye in every single scene. And I had liked her so much when she played Princess Margaret in the telefilm a few years ago!

I decided to watch it. It ought be a salutary lesson to John to read his scripts earlier - he would have some clout to change them a bit. As much as I wasn't fond of the character of Jack, that was a demolition job.

Yes, it was.

it was a severely depressing and dark episode, way heavy on the angst.

and yes, i also watched it drunk (is there another way to watch this?), which i blame for the tears at the end (because shit - they actually killed Ianto for good) but more importantly -

what the hell happened to Myfanwy??????????????

Myfanwy and Janet went on the lam. Although they probably died somewhere along the line too. It is torchwood after all. Everybody you care about dies! And the remaining character you love gets enough mental trauma to make you and he wish he were dead. Good times are had by all. NOT. I miss my stupid campy gay show.

I'm really pleased to see a thread where everyone watched the episode drunk! (Which I did as well, of course) That really was a pile of shite. I suppose they decided that if they were going to rip off Sophie's choice they may as well make it less cheerful.

Then again with the stupid endings, I don't know why he doesn't cut to the chase and just have them chanting "I do believe in fairies. "

Haven't slept. Writing part of brain has start weaving Ianto's fabric into current novel project. Will see ep shortly. Are you telling me Harkness was bodily assumed?! Blimus.

that teary Jack icon

I couldn't help smiling at the same phenomenon with Rose and the Doctor's weeping XCU from Midnight. That facial expression, I do not think it means what you think it means.

Well, if anyone wants me, I'll be in my concrete bunker.

Was there a point?

Once I heard why the 456 wanted the children, that was it for me. What a weak idea. I watched the whole episode in a different manner then, to how I'd watched the other parts.

But then I thought ... was that the point? The reason the earth was nearly destroyed was so utterly pointless?

Quite a few "fail" moments for me in this.

And was RTD also trying to portray Jack as God, in that he gave his only (grand) son to save the world?

So much fail, Russell, so much fail.

all I saw was Russell kicking us in THE FAYCE with OMGMELODRAMATIC grimness and despair

That sums it up rather nicely.

I wish I'd spoiled myself for this. I would have had the chance to skip the last episode entirely. Because I've kind of missed Rusty's lesson; I don't feel *for* Jack, I feel icked out *by* Jack.

You're right - the whole Jack/Ianto subplot was almost a red herring. In the end, it was Stephen's death that broke Jack in half, so why did Ianto die? I think he died because he represented blind, unconditional devotion to Jack, and with what Jack ended up doing, that POV couldn't survive. So basically Ianto was a metaphor. Which sucks, because I'd been laboring under the belief that he was a character. Oh well, silly me.

Oh god, I hate being in a position where I sound like I'm defending this misery-induced dreck but...I think Ianto's sacrifice prepared Jack to be able to sacrifice his grandson. Once Jack knew that Ianto was the price for resistance, he wanted to take it back. But he couldn't and Ianto wouldn't let him do that anyway. Once more, Ianto is Jack's conscience.

And not a character, as you say. :-)

Date: 2009-07-11 03:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rexluscus.livejournal.com
Yes, that too. I definitely think we were supposed to see Ianto as Jack's conscience throughout.

Everything I liked about Torchwood has had a big old crap taken on it. Jack's urge to be a better person and tough it out despite a painful history? Ianto in all his wonderfulness? ANY likeability for Jack whatsoever? Crap, crap, crap.

And even despite the fact that this story was infinitely more developed and more riveting than ANY Torchwood episode up to this point, Torchwood are STILL crap at actually being effective or solving anything except by accident, circumstance, or Jack's death.

If they revive the series it will be something completely other. They've killed the old show.

It's really too bad I couldn't have watched this whole series drunk, because I'm pregnant. And you know what's even worse than watching a show about KIDS DYING while you're pregnant? Watching it while you're pregnant and your other kid is 250 miles away from home so you can't even wake him up to cry and hug him a lot.

I'm channeling this into GRR ANGER AT RTD.
