I asked for, and received, Thriller for my birthday the year it came out. I believe it was my first ever long playing record. I guess I was a sort of a fan at the time, at least as much of a fan as one can be aged 8.
Well over 10 years later, I wrote a letter to Downing Street, asking that Jarvis Cocker be included somehow in the Queen's honours list for bravely wiggling his arse at the audience during Michael Jackson's frighteningly messianic Brits performance, which I think I called "obscene and disgusting" or something along those lines. I still have the response somewhere, I'll scan it some time. (Hint: they said no, that wasn't enough reason for a knighthood.)
Funny how much people can change, really.
