I have friended [livejournal.com profile] ask_captainjack. Just... because.

Also, what exactly is the point to having [livejournal.com profile] no_smut_janto? They posted in mah ninja comm and I'm wondering if I should delete it because their comm might be full of fluffy things and hearts? But I don't actually know because I cannot be fucked to go read what's in there. Mainly because there's no bumsecks involved. Honestly. Some people. (ETA: I got over my initial reaction, which was to just delete the damned post because their comm contains the word "janto". I thought that might be TOO PETTY of me.)

Some people don't like to read the sex, though. Surprisingly! Hahaha. But yes, you need different comms for different needs!

I suppose it's like...hmm, for example, I could quite happily write a no-sex Jack/Ianto fic...but it would probably be angsty (not just from Ianto, but Jack too). I don't think I *could*, however, write a fluffy fic with NO allusions to the sex because, as far as I'm concerned, that's NOT what Jack and Ianto are.

WATCH THEM ON SCREEN. LOOK AT THEIR RELATIONSHIP. Sure, you've got moments of sweetness, but the sexual tension is SO evident, that you ALWAYS assume they're banging right then, or have been just before you see them on screen, or they will do later on. As far as I'm concerned, you can't write a non-sex Jack/Ianto relationship, because it simply doesn't happen.

I'm writing 250-word drabbles for [livejournal.com profile] redismycolour, but they're 250 WORDS. Of *course* some of them are going to have no sex in them...but look at the rest of the stuff I've written! The very first Jack Ianto I wrote was NC-17! You'll have stand-alone fics with no sex in them, but that's not how I see their relationship all the time.

God, does that even make sense?!

Doesn't mean you have to write every detail in every single fic. I'm okay with implied pr0n, but not detailed.

I, too, have not friended 'no sex, jack and ianto', but I wouldn't delete it out of hand. Some folks are just tired of stories where the only two or three part chapters are that long because of excruiatingly detailed sexins.

Doesn't mean the comm is all warm and fuzzy - just no gratuitous 1finger, 2finger, 3finger, dick.

Just saying.

I did some research (as am malingering and don't want to head into work just yet). Rule #1 for the comm is:

"NO SMUT. (Can we say that enough?) This means your characters can kiss, cuddle, get their nipples pierced and anything else our depraved little minds can and will come up with, but please, no sex. If you need a clearer definition see here ..."

The "here" at the end of the quote is a link leading to a mod post that states:

"So… what do we mean by smut exactly? In simplest terms, any description of a sexual act. This means blowjobs, masturbation (mutual or solo), fingering, spanking etc etc and of course sex itself. We don’t want to see it. Vague implications are fine, as are ‘fade to black’s’ provided there is no description of sexual acts, or genitals/nipples in a sexual context whatsoever. The same goes for UST. We love UST! It can be a lot of fun but we don’t need to know exactly what they’re planning on doing to each other, or exactly how hard they’re making each other. It should go without saying that this is NOT the place for PWP's."

The mod post also helpfully provides a description of what *is* allowed:

"So what is allowed? Pretty much everything else actually. Kissing, cuddling, necking (or whatever you want to call it), flirting, groping of (clothed) arses, go for it. Nakedness in a non-sexual context is fine too, people take their clothes off for all sorts of reasons, think about it. We’re not going to ban pillow talk either, some of the most serious/moving conversations in fanfic have taken place in the ‘after’, we just don’t want graphic descriptions of the ‘before’."

For what it's worth, the fics appearing on the very first page of the comm are all being posted on torch_wood and jackxianto, so I suppose the no_smut comm acts as some sort of filter, weeding out the fics that do include sex and body parts. Clearly, the fandom is now crying out for a comm that houses only fic including sex and descriptions of body parts.

Date: 2009-01-05 01:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] forgiveninasong.livejournal.com
Yeah, that's what I'd say. It's like...a filter, so you if you do want to read a fic with no sex (er...), then go to no_smut.

*therefore*, I'd say, it's a fair community to have, and not really as pointless as it first appeared.

I suppose the only reason you could delete it from ninja, is if you have a no promotions rule.

"What about this cock?" asked Gwen, holding it carefully with the gentleness of a really gentle thing.

Jack appraised the cock critically. "We could feed it to Myfanwy."

Ianto crossed his legs some feet away. Because he felt like it.

Gwen held the cock erectly. "Don't be cruel, Jack," she said in her delightful accent, "and people might start thinking they can't trust Torchwood with their cocks."

"I'll have to clean up after it," sighed Ianto, tightening his arsehole as part of his daily exercises that he could do while sitting at a desk.

"Forget the cock," said Jack, "I want you guys to see my new piercing."

Gwen hugged the cock between her breasts. "Is it somewhere personal?"

"It's just my nipple," said Jack, pulling up his shirt in a PG fashion. "Look, isn't it pretty?"

Ianto and Gwen and the cock all agreed that it was. And then they done tea.

Maybe, but I think it's following the law of diminishing returns here - it's hilarious as is, leave be :D "Because he felt like it" is a good enough reason! (Could also be "because he was getting pins and needles" if it were re-crossing his legs...*is overthinking again*)

I did join no-smut. I'm hoping for some quality stuff in there. Maybe it will not work out that way but there is just so much stuff that is basically horrible sex scenes written by what seems to be people who have never actually had sex or who think Jack and Ianto are 15 year old girls in love. I'd rather just have some good plot. Though if there's both good plot and good sex that's good too, which I why I am in lots of communities.

OMG, ask_captainjack is hilarious, yes!

And yeah, I don't think I'll be reading smut-less fic. Sorry, I don't see the point. Especially since sex is pretty much what their relationship is about. Well, mostly...

I'm jumping in a bit late...

...and I've actually posted to that comm.

Partially because I'm a comment ho, and as the fic I wrote had no sex, I reckoned it'd get more exposure that way (har de har har), but also because there's plenty that can be written about Jack and Ianto that doesn't involve explicit onscreen sex. I happened to write about what happened right after Cyberwoman.

I don't know that the comm moderators will succeed in getting anything other than kittenfic stuff, but I dont see anything wrong with saying don't show me all the bits.

I've avoided no_smut_janto for the simple reason of who is one of the mods of it. I find (personally - I have no statistical evidence) that the mod determines the quality of fic.

(Or maybe I want the buttsecks, even if it's to laugh at while I drink too much wine)

I dunno, I think there's a place for it. On the show there is an undeniably prominent sexual component to their relationship, and it's definitely where there relationship started from, but I think there's a lot to indicate that there is a definite basis or at least potential for an emotional/romantic/intellectual/etc. connection. I think they have a significant understanding between them-- we know that Jack definitely trusts Ianto as Ianto knows things about Torchwood that the rest of the team doesn't, and he's obviously much more trusted in terms of Jack's personal life than anyone else on the team. I also think that if it was the writers' intent to have their relationship be purely/primarily sexual it would have been handled differently. There wouldn't be any need for Jack kissing Ianto in front of everyone in 'End of Days,' or asking him out on a proper date, or Ianto crying into Jack's coat, or them dancing in public.... Gwen and Owen's relationship in season 1 was purely sexual and I think handled quite differently from the Jack/Ianto relationship. Basically I think the no_smut comm is just for focusing on the parts of Jack and Ianto's relationship that aren't sexual, to what extent those may be perceived to exist. Basically a relationship study. Maybe for some people that might translate into shmaltzy romance but I think at least ideologically it might just be for a look at the other components of their relationship.

[livejournal.com profile] ask_captainjack is hilarious (and a little like looking at canon in a fun house mirror). I hope 'he' keeps posting.

I'm thinking [livejournal.com profile] no_smut_janto is a reaction to the posts complaining about BAD sex scenes (from a couple of weeks ago - one of yours being among them). The answer to that problem - of course - is to excise the sex scenes entirely. (There's no better reaction than over-reaction, right?) I'm not going to bother with it simply because I'm a Shameless!Shipper - Jack+Ianto+Sex is as canon as Torchwood gets for me. (And I'm also feeling it'll be all hearts and flowers as a sex substitute. To date, Jack+Ianto+hearts'n'flowers is the anti-canon.)

Date: 2009-01-06 04:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kalliopeia.livejournal.com
I think the point of the comm is that some people are tired of reading fics in which the sex scenes are clinical, dull, and 45 pages long, and as a bonus adds nothing whatsoever to the story. I don't think anyone on the comm objects to sex in fics as a general thing. The only way to avoid that without slogging halfway through a million stories is to have a place where the fics are supposed to be plot focused.

I'm sure it'll have its share of "fluffy things and hearts" as all the comms do but the people who post and read there are not, by default, 11 year old girls who write stories filled with Harkness-Jones households and mpreg and committment ceremonies.
