As I've been reading around my friendslist, yesterday the Yes on 8 lobby filed briefs seeking to nullify the 18000-ish same-sex marriages that were carried out in California before Prop 8 passed on November 4th. My mind boggles, it really does.

I just can't fathom that Yes on 8 spent nearly 40 million dollars getting this proposition to pass, prompting No on 8 to spend nearly the same trying fruitlessly (and slightly uncoordinatedly, let's face it) to stop them. 80 million dollars in total. I just don't get it. I don't understand how anyone could go into a courtroom the week before Christmas and seek to make 36000 people unhappy because they believe that they have the right to dictate to those 36000 people who they should love and want to be with and take care of and grow old with. And I'm not even talking about being for or against gay marriage, I'm really not, I just don't understand that of all the awful, awful things in this world, all the economic woes, the people homeless and hurting and sick and miserable, why this? Doesn't it strike anyone at Yes on 8, in this Christian season of love and giving and togetherness, that it's just a little bit fucked up to be spending all your time and your effort and your money and your Christian spirit on this? 40 million dollars that could have fed and clothed and housed and cured thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. And what do you do with it? Spread hate, lies and misinformation, bully corporations, hire ever more expensive lawyers, and all to shut people out of a basic right and punish them for loving each other. Merry Fucking Christmas to you too, dudes. You've lost your way, seriously.

The world always depresses me at Christmas.

I don't get why people spend so much time making others unhappy. How two people who love each other, have loved each other for years, getting married somehow makes their marriage worth less baffles me. Especially considering if I was a guy I can go pick up a hooker and marry her in Vegas in 5 minutes. I see the sense there, totally.

This just one of the many, many reasons why, after 45 years of being a Catholic, I finally couldn't stomach the misogynistic, soul-destroying hypocrisy of it all, and walked out, slamming the door behind me.

Agreed. I just don't understand this desire the religious right has to tell other people what is and isn't allowable. I gave up on Christianity when I was 9 years old because I couldn't stomach the sexism I encountered in church. Nothing that I have since seen in the world has ever made me regret my decision.

Oh, let's not forget the hypocrisy of it all. According to all the polls, who are the biggest buyers of published (ebook or print) male/male romance? Straight conservative women... so apparently you are allowed to get your jollies reading about it, you just can't allow it. And people wonder why I'm mostly agnostic these days.

I wish that you would send this as a letter to the editor in every major newspaper in California.

There are so many people in the world who lack the ability to see any other world view or life experience other than their own.

It IS very sick isn't it? I mean, all that money WASTED on what? Judging other people.

And now, they've vowed to fight back again, and judge Californians. Again. (BTW most of the funding for Prop 8 came from out of state).

I have completely denounced Christianity and all those fairy tales in the last few years but I do know this should NOT be what Christianity is about. Not what they claim it's about. My god, there are tons of things in the bible that they ignore but they loooove to focus on teh gays. If Jesus came back, he would be so pissed that he'd rip all these homophobes new assholes, for real. It's about them being uncomfortable more than it is about actual religion. Either way, it's fucking wrong.

I still have YET to hear from a single person that said YES, their marriage was harmed by gays getting married. They need to ban divorce, methinks, if they're so against anything that hurts marriages. Of course I don't really want to ban divorce but if we all tried to ban divorce, they'd change their tune pretty darn quick. Or would at least come up with a different reason as to why gay marriage should be banned.

I think most of them are closeted. Where's a gay bomb when you need one?

I sort of wish that they could just nullify the votes on Prop 8 of all the straight people who ever got divorced. I bet there would have been a much different outcome.

There are much MUCH bigger threats to marriage than gay people, if they're not gonna spent the money on feeding and clothing people who need, at least spend it on ACTUALLY helping marriage.

It really makes me depressed. I may be biased (well, hell, I definitely am biased) because I'm an atheist and as such religion-based morals make even less sense to me than most bizarre opinions I hear, and since most anti-gay-marriage arguments seem to have religious roots it really, really frustrates me. I cannot even believe that this action of trying to remove 18,000 marriages isn't considered some kind of crime.

Plus they're ignoring yet another part of the bible that talks about marriage - the line, "What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder."

Once again, they're going against their own bible by trying to break up these 18,000 existing marriages.

Christianity angers me, period. But cafeteria Christians piss me off even more (those who pick and choose what they want from the bible and leave the rest).

'cafeteria Christians'
Oooh, I'll have to remember that one. That really pisses me off too.

Damn if those who pick and choose from *any* religion aren't the people who annoy me most. I actually have a Jewish friend who, I swear to all that's holy, once said "oh of course I go to Synagogue and stuff on the important festivals, and my religion means loads to me, but it's so much effort to keep Kosher - and I love bacon."

I swear, one day my head will explode with the stupid stuff people say.

"Do unto your neighbour as you would have done unto you" and "Love thy neighbour as you love yourself" (roughly quoted...) would be two excellent reasons why this should NOT have been passed.

I just can't believe this shit. I take it very personally as my brother and his partner who have been together over 20 years flew out to California specifically so they could get married. And now that can be taken away from them? Fuck those fucking assholes. I hate those Christian assholes as much as they hate gay people.
