I think I just broke my little toe. I whacked it against the baby gate in an attempt to get over the baby gate without actually opening it. The internets reliably informs me that there is no point in going to hospital for a broken wee toe as all they do is strap it to the next one and you can do that yourself. Which is good, because I'm not about to pack up two children and go to the hospital because I can't be bothered.

STILL HURTS LIKE A MOTHERFUCKER, THOUGH. OOOOOOOOWWWWWW!!!!!!

Ouch. Try cooling with ice, maybe?

I broke/snapped my left baby toe off (it bent completely 90 degrees) when I was about fifteen, sixteen. Hurt like hell, I still don't wear sandals, but duct tape does work! I can flap it funny now, too.

Oh, and why I used duct tape: I cut about a third of my right baby toe off when I was twelve. Duct tape worked then, and I was all, "This will work now!" Belief, belief, belief! Hahaha.

Horizontally, not vertically. You know, my toes don't have an easy time of it.

Ooh, my sympathy. Nothing compares to the agony of a stubbed toe, particularly if it's broken.

ICE and ARNICA are your friends. Trust me, out of 10 toes, 4 have been broken at some point.

Seriously, Arnica is great, and you're in Europe, so you might be able to find sublingual tablets.

my toes are tingling in sympathy.
Haven't damaged the little one, but I once managed to dislocate (and nearly decapitate) my big toe during a judo competition.

Gahhh!! Oh, I know how that hurts and those baby gates are a bitch, I agree.

I broke my left big toe twice (well, not confirmed by the hospital of course, because, yeah, all they'll do is put some tape on it, charge you a fortune and send you home). But I'm 99.9% sure I broke it by the way it felt.

I was dreaming that I was in the rain barefoot and worms were crawling on my feet. I was icked out in the dream, made a motion to kick the worms off my feet, kicked the wall next to my bed in real life and BAM.

Two months later, I did it again. Same dream, same wall, same toe. Owwww.

Ow! it's always surprising how something that is so small can hurt so much when you stub it, let alone do anything worse to it :(

You're right...there's not much they can do. Buy some paper tape at the pharmacy and use it tape the broken one to the next one over.

However, just be careful (if it is broken) to keep an eye on it for a few days. Add lots of ice and elevate the foot when you can (above the level of your heart) and if the swelling doesn't go down in a few days, go have an X-ray done, ok?

(I injured myself a LOT in high school from sports, ROTC and general clumsiness... I can patch up damn near anything now.)
