"Alan Sugar will pick his new Apprentice tonight in the final" IS NOT NEWS. And it CERTAINLY isn't news worthy of including in your 4 headline HEADLINE ROUNDUP. THERE IS ACTUAL NEWS HAPPENING, ALL OVER THE PLACE. GO REPORT SOME.

I don't post about the world at large much, I know, so bear with me and feel free to ignore. I was watching the same ITV news yesterday and they did their usual American NBC roundup, which ended with a report on petrol prices in the US. Because, yeah, they're paying $4 and up a gallon over there. Cut back to the British studio and one of their clueless ITV bimbos, who ends the report saying in the most sarcastic tone she can muster "But, of course, that's still FAR LESS than we're paying here in Britain, at $10 a gallon." LOL. I kind of expected her to add "So I don't know what the fuck they're complaining about, stupid Yanks" Bless. The British press currently really seem to be unable to look past their little island and see the bigger picture, I swear to God, it's like they're living in a tiny little cut-off fantasy world. So, yeah, ITV newsnugget people, seriously, have a think about it and while you're at it get down on your bare knees and thank the good Lord that Bush has fucked the dollar up the ass so royally that our pounds and euros can still afford to buy the oil that goes into making the nappies I so regularly wrap around my children's arses, because one of these days the wind will change and your face will fucking stick like that. And planes bursting into flames and such? Yeah, that happened REALLY FAR AWAY, but it's still more newsworthy than ALAN FUCKING SUGAR.

Stop distilling everything down to bite-sized half-truth nuggets of infotainment and report the fucking news already. Gah.

I despair because deep down, I know all American news is like this. I don't know if I can cope with that. Ho hum.

a couple of the Bay Area TV stations have good local news programs (KTVU is probably the best) so you won't be overly depressed. its the nat'l news programs that are utter garbage. the local PBS (KQED) airs BBC World News at 5:30pm Monday-Friday.

as for the fuel prices. well, there's a need to compare apples to apples, and they aren't. US "premium" gasoline- which is $4.75/us gallon ($1.05/litre) in the SF area is lower octane and performance rated than the typical petrol95 available in the UK which is going for something like 118p/liter. my gray market MG-F, which would run the cheapest UK fuel, needs AvGas (Aviation grade gasoline) in the US and that stuff is currently about $18/gallon. needless to say, the honda is getting driven while the MG "rests".
