a couple of the Bay Area TV stations have good local news programs (KTVU is probably the best) so you won't be overly depressed. its the nat'l news programs that are utter garbage. the local PBS (KQED) airs BBC World News at 5:30pm Monday-Friday.
as for the fuel prices. well, there's a need to compare apples to apples, and they aren't. US "premium" gasoline- which is $4.75/us gallon ($1.05/litre) in the SF area is lower octane and performance rated than the typical petrol95 available in the UK which is going for something like 118p/liter. my gray market MG-F, which would run the cheapest UK fuel, needs AvGas (Aviation grade gasoline) in the US and that stuff is currently about $18/gallon. needless to say, the honda is getting driven while the MG "rests".
