Okay, this will all seem a bit random and there are spoilers and stuff, so don't read it if you don't like that sort of thing, srsly, JUST MOVE ALONG, it's not that hard.
I've been doing a bit of thinking and discussing and such about these Who finale spoilers, the talk about Rusty leaving, Torchwood being rejigged AGAIN (WHY?? Don't fix it, asshats, it ain't broke right now!!) and the possible 5/6 episode Torchwood stint, so I'm going to put some rambling thoughts down about what's going on and hope they make sense.
In Gareth news: ACTUAL FIRST HAND ORGEE ACCOUNTS are more than welcome IF they are cock-related and, obviously, actual pictorial evidences of alleged cock incidents would be rewarded with some sort of fangirlish bounty.
- First of all the 5/6 episode TW run wouldn't hugely surprise me, just because logistically, doing 6 TW eps plus 3 full length Who specials just about adds up to the same amount of work as ONE CREW would put in for a WHOLE NORMAL SEASON of either of those two things. I wouldn't read too much into it, I don't think there's an implication there that either show is scaling down for good, I think they're just attempting to keep one crew employed for the upcoming year, as opposed to offering a few months here and there, which is never a popular move.
- Money stuff. WHAT HAPPENED TO CBC?? They dropped Who after S3 and TW after S1, is that just lack of funds or what? I never actually read any reports on why the collaboration ended. Is the franchise costing BBC Wales slightly more money than we perhaps realise now that it's a solo production? Are they possibly looking for a new co-production partner? (Like I've said before, it wouldn't surprise me if BBCA were willing to pump some money into TW with a few strings attached, including upping the number of episodes, which would require better writing for en ensemble cast, which would require a slightly different production method, which... etc etc.) Plus, SciFi's first broadcast rights on Who are up soon (after the specials, I assume?) In short, I think there's A LOT going on behind the scenes right now, Russell's leaving is probably even tied into all that somewhere along the line.
- Speculation tiem: The stuff I've heard is this when it comes to the Who finale: There's a reset button, there's at least ten people IN the TARDIS (Donna, Martha, Rose, Sarah Jane, Jack, Gwen, Ianto, Mickey, Jackie, Pete). When it comes to the new series of TW, I've heard Mickey and Martha are joining, but I've also heard talk that there's been casting (for an uncommissioned series, cool) for Owen and Tosh's replacements, and, obviously, Marsters is on board for a number of episodes (in fact, he has seemed to be the MOST FIRM in seeing TW as an actual DIARY commitment already, and I figure with the commitments he has elsewhere, he is actually likely to receive more solid information than anyone else if they want him to return.)
- SO, BEARING ALL THAT IN MIND, this is my theory: It's not a popular choice, but I DO think there's a reset button involved somehow and we may well lose a few months, if not years of canon. The reason I think this, is because doing so (there was talk of Nine never having regenerated into Ten, now there's talk of Eight never having regenerated into Nine and something to do with changing the outcome of the Time War.) DOESN'T ACTUALLY AFFECT ANYTHING, IF all the major players involved in the franchise are at the eye of the storm and therefore unaffected. The Torchwood organisation could conceivably not exist or have ever existed without that proving too much of a problem for the Torchwood TV show, IF Jack, Gwen and Ianto have still been through everything they've been through in S1 and 2 by virtue of them missing out on the reset. They could easily start up TW mark 2 with no real problem, because the end is where they start from, after all. And there has been talk of a MAJOR CHANGE at TW.
- In fact, you see, the thing is, the more I think about EVERY MAJOR CHARACTER FROM THE
ZOOWHONIVERSE BEING IN THE TARDIS AT THE SAME TIME, the more I can't really think of any other valid reason for that to happen OTHER THAN circumstances outside the TARDIS changing to such an extent that every player in the franchise will need protecting from those changes. - And the reason I'm starting to buy into that idea now is PRECISELY BECAUSE I now KNOW Russell is leaving and LOOK WHAT CHIBNALL DID TO TW ON HIS WAY OUT. Russell obviously likes those big gay dramatic gestures, or you'd think he'd have vetoed major character death on Torchwood. I think Russell's going to do something MASSIVE. Not CGI massive, just massive. Canon massive.
- Having said that, it's probably jusy some big gay cgi monster.

yep, very good points

Date: 2008-05-04 09:47 am (UTC)- I think the CBC thing might be related to the 5/6 episode thing. I bet BBCA does kick in eventually, but I doubt they'd ask for changes. If ain't broke and all. If it's related to Who and what BBC1 can commission, it would make sense too. BBC is in the crapper budget wise. It may not effect Who, but a BBC2 show filling the slot of a BBC1 juggernaut? Yeah, I could see budget restraints effected that. No matter what, I believe season 4 will be back to normal. And I do believe both seasons will be commissioned. Unless they really are that stupid.
- I still don't believe it's the reset. They'd need to include the entire cast of SJA too, otherwise Sarah Jane loses her kid and her soon to be new love interest (he's got to be, right?). It was done already last season, and truthfully, there is nothing substantiated that would support it. In fact, I think the reset stuff all came from speculation, not an actual rumor or spoiler. On the other hand, the "Nyssa's big line" stuff does intrigue me. That one actually came from a reputable source. If someone already introduced (or about to be) isn't "the doctor all along," what could that relate to. Somebody was someone all along. That's what I'm thinking. And I'm looking to Who this season, and not Ianto. Not matter how much I want to. (It all comes back to Ianto, doesn't it?)
-I agree that if everyone is in the TARDIS, then the reset wouldn't hurt Torchwood. Except Tosh would be locked up, and Owen would be...who knows, and Lisa would be out there...and Suzie...the more I think about it, the more problems I think a reset would cause, and I'm certain RTD is aware of this.
-I think Owen and Tosh's deaths were Rusty's idea. He's been wanting to do a shocking death, and there's nothing like two at once. It was his own personal contest with Whedon (who, like Ianto, didn't even know there was one), and Rusty wins. But only because Whedon was such a dick when he killed someone. Whedon's is longer, but Rusty's got more girth, me thinks.
-not a big gay cgi monster, just a small one (the big D, hopefully). And if it is the big D, then I hope it's as cheesy as he can be, cause that's what he should be.
-Okay, now my little rant about the latest news of dearest Gareth. So, I just got back from a Raconteurs show, and they are hands down the best live rock band out there. See them if you can. I think it should be the law for music fans. This was my third time seeing them. Excellent. Every time. Ask someone else who's seen them. Excellent. Every time. What they do is just...amazing, brilliant, transcendental....there are not enough superlatives to talk about their live show. What they do? Is heavy blues. Yeah, that thing Gareth like to use to describe his band. These guys are perfecting it. Jack White is a god. A blues god. And Patrick Keeler, the drummer, and Brendan Benson are no slouches. I needed a lot more than a cigarette after that show. Damn!
And then I get home, can't sleep because of fucking Jack White and his kick ass drummer...I love them both from the tips of my toes to the tips of my motherfucking hair. I get home, and read a brief recap of Orgee :eyeroll: What. The. Fuck? I just had my universe rocked by a man who showed about as much skin as Ianto in CJH. Seriously. He was in black pants, a black shirt and waistcoat, and a gold tie. In fact, less skin, because his sleeves were rolled up a bit, but his top button was still done. And Gareth pulled his pants down for a spanking and flashed his willie? Lovely. Hey Gareth! You may never be Jack White on stage, but you can cream the panties of your fangirls while still keeping your pants on. Just play the fucking blues dude. Play. The fucking. Blues.
And drop your pants at the conventions. They'll appreciate it more...and I'll be more likely to be there ;-)
Sorry that was so long, but I'm tired, and senseless, and...GAH!
Thank God for spellcheck.

Date: 2008-05-04 11:06 am (UTC)As for Gareth, I have a theory that he's suffering from what I like to call Graham Coxon Syndrome. My frame of reference very often harks back to early 90's Britpop, I'm afraid, but I think I'll expand on that theory and actually write it down in a day or two. It makes sense in MY head, and that's all that matters.

Date: 2008-05-04 01:22 pm (UTC)Yep. Very, very interesting.
As for Gareth, I have a theory that he's suffering from what I like to call Graham Coxon Syndrome.
Blur's Graham Coxon? I don't know much about the band outside of Albarn. I'd love to hear this.
It makes sense in MY head, and that's all that matters.
Too true. I'm sure it will make sense. Looking at my earlier reply, I'm surprised it was coherent at all. Man, I was blabbering on.
By the way, have you seen the complete Q&A videos for The Rift? I think the squee went to a lot of girl's heads. For instance, JM didn't compare his cock to Gareth's. He said essentially that they were close, but not that close. Gareth was cracking on JM's string theory lecture. Basically, more posturing. Given that we may now have photos...which I hope someone has the guts to share with the class...this may be a moot issue.
Also, Gareth hinted strongly that he had deals in the US that fell through because of the writer's strike, and he admitted his band was (direct quote) "not very good." He seemed a lot more humble and self-deprecating than I expected. The night show was another matter altogether.
And his answer about being on Who still came off as Rusty-ease to me, but his body language made me pause. He changed. His started stuttering and physically closed down when he was answering. Lying bastard.

Date: 2008-05-04 01:32 pm (UTC)I think that was me who mentioned talk of a comparison. *embarrassed* In my own defense, I was just going on memory since I did my report before any videos were up. Thank goodness for video. :) Rewatching there were things I didn't even remember hearing. The acoustics were really bad too, so if you were in the queues at the time some answers were a little hard to hear.
I did notice the body language about Who too, though. His response made me think it was pretty likely he would be on.

Date: 2008-05-04 01:47 pm (UTC)You weren't the only one. I saw other reports that said the same. I was trying to be witty, but certainly meant no disrespect to you gals. Given the chaos that was reported, I'm surprised we got what we did.
Since you were there, I'm trying to understand the layout. In relation to the stage, which side was photos and which was autographs? Someone said the autographs were in the back of the hall, but I didn't see any curtains back there.
no subject
Date: 2008-05-04 02:06 pm (UTC)Anyway, it was all in one room, no curtains, nothing. Stage front, photos immediately to stage right, about 15-20 rows of seats, back tables for merchandise and aurographs against the back wall and right wall. Qeues everywhere. It was slightly...disorganized. If it hadn't been for the guests being so open and funny and Kai and GDL improv later that night I would have been a lot more crtical. It was a bit of a mess, tbh.

Date: 2008-05-04 03:23 pm (UTC)On the other hand, there's something so Torchwood about it it makes me wanna laugh. Even the conventions are chaotic, but beautiful crack.

Date: 2008-05-04 02:24 pm (UTC)Blur's Graham Coxon, yes. Very talented musician, he could never really get his head around Blur's screaming 12-year-old contingent of fans, and coped with it in a variety of interesting ways, most of which involved getting drunk and falling over. I shall gather my thoughts overnight and see what comes out.

Date: 2008-05-04 03:03 pm (UTC)The only complete videos are the two with Gareth. Score!
http://silverspirit-17.livejournal.com/96744.html
I was able to rip the vids. Since the girl said she was going to set up a download link I didn't think it a big deal. The rips sounded clearer than posted videos. If you're having too much trouble with the posted vids, I can zip my copies and send them to you.
At the end of this post has a complete, and very accurate, transcript of the JM and GDL Q&A. The only error I found was that Gareth did get Aronofsky's name correct, but it was obscure enough that I was amazed she got it as close as she did. And this was just from notes!

ITA with above. I am all for GDL flashing his anatomy and being dirty, but I wouldn't mind his music being better. His a capella voice is really lovely when he's not shrieking.
Or, better yet, perhaps trying to find some manner of acting job. Or pursuing more pectoral definition. Something like that. :|

Big fat WORD to all of this.
That's what gets me. If I didn't think he had some sort of potential I wouldn't care. But when I hear the awesome bluesy tone in his voice, and remember that great cover of Roadhouse Blues from last summer it just guts me that this is what he's resorted to. He could really have a decent side project if he would stop dicking around and just sing and play.
I'm starting to wonder if he can get jobs in the UK. Watching that video just served to highlight how American he comes off. His style may not work there as well. Which is sad, and interesting at the same time. Doesn't mean there aren't projects opening up in the US right now. I mean, a quarter of the IATSE (crew) workers in LA are still unemployed, but there is a ton of work in Texas right now...just sayin'
I did let off a bit of a squee when he did that rather good impersonation of JM. He's got American accents in his arsenal. Yay!
And yes, the gym is his friend. He doesn't have to look like JB, but the moobs have got to go. For Ianto's sake.
no subject
Date: 2008-05-04 01:53 pm (UTC)I wonder if it has to do with doing a lot of his acting with JB and a fair amount of stuff with Jm. His accent was pretty good, and I asked him during my autograph if he had ever been to the US and he said "no, not properly." (I did wonder how one goes to the US improperly--perhaps a flight layover) He said he was pysched about going, though. Perhaps he can extend his San Diego trip a bit and hit up some casting directors in LA while he is there.
It's funny that in person he is very thin (I was sort of stunned when I first saw him, how someone like that could look so much bigger on screen), just not with the definition one sees and expects from actors I suppose. I've met or worked with a fair amount of actors and he isn't really any bigger than most of them, just carries weight differently or something. And he has developed a little bit of a beer belly. I really hope he doesn't stumble on this post in his search for janto porn, btw. If so, don't worry, Gareth. You're still hot. Also, stop screaming and sing. And get a new agent. And also, pull your trousers up (or down). Either one.
As an aside, Not like I can talk wrt to the puffiness/extra poundage, but then again, my career doesn't depend on it.
no subject
Date: 2008-05-04 02:20 pm (UTC)For me, it was comparing him to most of the people I've known from the UK, although none of them Welsh. Maybe it's a quality of the Welsh, but he came off as a lot more open and with a bit of an...I don't know how to describe it except to say an American attitude (a certain kind of harmless arrogance?). Of course, my experience is with them coming over here. I've known people from all over though. England, Scotland, Northern Ireland (and Ireland). Actors included. I bet you're right about exposure to JB and JM being a factor.
The "properly" comment is interesting. Layover probably, or maybe a weekend in New York. A lot of my foreign friends say going to New York isn't like the US for them. They see Manhattan as a giant tourist trap/ movie set. But then, they've seen a lot more of the US.
It's funny that in person he is very thin (I was sort of stunned when I first saw him, how someone like that could look so much bigger on screen), just not with the definition one sees and expects from actors I suppose.
You aren't the first person I've read that from. I do wonder if some of it may simply be that he's lost a lot of the weight since November. He does look thinner on the video. But yeah, the camera really does add weight. Definition helps. As does putting down the beer. He has to know that his metabolism isn't getting any faster.
I feel ya on the extra poundage, but I really do need to lose it for my work. Thankfully though, a lot of mine was medical weight gain. Now that I'm being treated, my weight has dropped dramatically...and without adding any extra activity. It's like my birthday a every two weeks when I step on a scale! hee

much of mine is too, but we (assorted medical professionals, trainers and me) are having a devil of a time getting it off, even now that I am being treated. I keep at it, though. The only way it really affects my work though is little kids in schools in China where I work asking me embarrassing questions. :/
Would you mind if I friended you? I have been trying to meet other TW fans these past few months and your comments are insightful and interesting. *edited to take out comment about whipping and Orgee because I wasn't there so what do I know* But I have found it difficult to meet other TW fans on LJ, which is odd since I have been pretty active in other fandoms over the last 4 years here.

What gets me the most is that Gareth doesn't realize what he's doing, and the type of fan he is feeding with that kind of behavior. I've seen it before (well, not with whips), and I know where this can go, and it scares me a bit.

Orgee....
Date: 2008-05-04 03:05 pm (UTC)literally just got home, have not slept since Saturday morning so that's...32 hours and counting??? may be a bit rambling...
there was nudity, sex, crazy fangirls, whipping and threats of violence. Gareth was involved in all of the above.
Yes, Gareth was whipped. Several times. He must have enjoyed it, because he willingly agreed to a replay when I asked him. His arse was bright red with severe marks across it and I believe his yelp of pain was rather genuine!
Cock came out, however, not to audience, as he was showing it to Nick (Disgracelands) as he was performing. I was next to him, but sadly, he made sure there was no view of it. Maybe someone else caught him at a different moment?
There was a lovely interchange during his set:
Fangirl - I've met John Barrowman!
Gareth - Really? What's he like?
Bassist Rhys - You;ve had his cock.....up your bum....your bum bum...
Gareth - He's average...I've seen better...*pause* in the mirror...
ok, that may seem geeky i remember it, but only because we've been repeating it to ourselves all day long, it was hilarious!
gig was awesome if cut short and Gareth was blooming furious, so we left him to stew. Great fun !There is more, but not cock-related, as far as I know. :)
Although he does have a lovely little beer belly. :)
