I think BE and AE are starting mix quite a bit more, on the whole, in recent years. "Pants" is probably the very worst offender in that respect, because that's NEVER going into the British lexicon as anything other than underwear, but in general most Brits don't even bat an eyelid anymore if you say things like elevator or eggplant. That's globalisation for you.
