See, I don't think her life was ruined by Gwen. I think that what Gwen did meant that she had an outpouring of grief-- pain that had been on slow burn suddenly became acute: but I felt that the scene where she was packing up Jonah's room showed that she had, in a way, achieved closure: painful closure, but ultimately it was probably better that she was able to move on, than wasting her life away on a hopeless cause. I'm glad they didn't retcon her.
