I think my favorite part of the finale was that it didn't go in the direction I thought it would when "The Pandorica Opens" ended. Everyone thought "Fuck, not only do we have the Daleks and Cybermen, but we have all the baddies ever! Who let RTD in here?" Then SM takes the whole thing in another direction. Sure there's the one Dalek (because you need something to hinder the gang a bit) but there is no epic battle. It's just a race against time to solve a puzzle that seems to have no solution.
RTD could pull heartstrings easily, though it always seemed like just a way to manipulate the fans. SM had me crying quietly as Eleven told the sleeping Amelia the story, but it wasn't emotion for emotion's sake. There was a purpose to it all that moved everything along.
There is no doubt in my mind now that Eleven is my Doctor and Steven Moffat is my writer.
