THIS! It wasn't the actor, it was the writer dragging it down. The writer who didn't believe in coherent narrative and kept making the Doctor say what he wanted to say.
Now the show's in the hands of the guy who keeps winning Hugos for it, who manages to love it even when he's parodying it. He may end up disappointing us in other ways - I don't like the new theme - but his storytelling instincts are solid.
