I also think that without immortal Jack, this story wasn't a Torchwood story. And the only way the immortality was really going to work in the story, was for Jack to die with someone he "loved". And then Ianto's death became a necessity. It wasn't a natural development of the story, it was a decision by the writers to make everything fit. Quite why RTD then felt the need to totally destroy Ianto and the fans belief in him, I don't know. But it was manipulative, and it's wrong to accuse the fans of over-reacting.

And I miss Ianto, my Ianto, so very much and this pain is not going to go away anytime soon.
