That's one of my pet peeves, screwed up aspect ratio in icons or anything else. I just can't even look at it. I couldn't believe it when torchwood_house recc'd a picspam that was otherwise unobjectionable but the aspect ratio was totally off and I literally couldn't look at it. I really wanted to - I was annoyed.
