Nobody (or certainly not me) is saying it's not like real life, that's not my point, it is like real life and I wish you'd get off your been there, done that high horse once in a while when it comes to romantic experience because that's what your argument always seems to boil down to. I've been there too, and done that, and done a few other things I probably shouldn't have done, wish I hadn't done, vehemently wish I had done and everything in between. I still do those things. On a daily basis. Apart from that thing we only do once a week. Honestly, I don't wish to offend, I always enjoy debating with you, but you do come across sometimes as if you feel you know more about the intricacies of complex human emotional relationships than anyone else. I digress. Sorry.
Take Gwen, she had an affair with Owen, which was probably an unwise and two-timing thing to do. It's one of the reasons I don't like her. But I have no problem with the writing. I think it's entirely natural that she would have done what she did with Owen. It makes her a bit of an unlikeable character, given her holier-than-thou attitude the rest of the time, but it's reasonably realistic writing. It's the kind of thing that happens to real people all the time. Real people do really stupid stuff, real people fall for the wrong guy, real people make mistakes and are mean to the other real people who love them.
The problem I, and others, have with the portrayal of Jack/Ianto is that it seems shrouded in vagueness and subtlety not because that's how real relationships are, but because the writing team doesn't want to commit to a direction. That's how it comes across to a lot of people, and that's not because it's subtle or because it's unrealistic, it's because the writing's inconsistent and vague. And while I think it's understandable that they don't want to commit Jack to anything too specific, I think it's lazy storytelling.
