Am I the only one that can really picture shoplifting Ianto...after Gareth's portrayal of Ianto saying no to Jack in End of Days, that boy was totally susceptable to peer pressure...I imagine he had one very cool (not totally un-Jack like) friend who was a bit of a rebel and Ianto did it, convinced that he could impress said friend, like the way he tried on several personas in Fragments (I'm picturing cassette tapes from an indpendent music store)

And drifter Ianto...I'm feeling that, he basically said that Torchwood gave him meaning in Adam, I wouldn't be surprised if orphan, drifter Ianto came to London and met Lisa who hooked him up with the job at Torchwood in the first place.

But it wasn't the pressure from his team members that compelled him to rebel against Jack; it was the thought of saving many lives. He was the only team member who wanted to open the rift for unselfish reasons (after seeing “Fragments,” Jack’s very pointed and pained expression over Ianto’s choice makes so much more sense now.).

I really think Ianto meddled with the computer files as others have suggested.
