THE DEFINITIVE FANON GUIDE TO JACK AND IANTO, PART THE FIRST

Now that we've all calmed down a bit, it's time for some science. I have put together a wee poll to find out what is going on in ALL YOUR PRETTY LITTLE HEADS. There have been many things we haven't been told about Jack and Ianto, most of us have filled in the blanks with out own personal fanon, and I'd like to know what, on the whole, that fanon comprises. On with the science...

Wow; I pretty much agree with the majority on all questions. Excellent poll, though.

Also, clarification on one point: I voted that Jack's hole is "Still in use, bigger bed, though" but only up to Exit Wounds, upon which I doubt Jack would be overly keen on sleeping underground (or, given that the entire hub is underground, in a mildly claustrophobic setting). I'd like to think that he's moved in with Ianto.

I still think Ianto is the one pulling on the brakes. Doesn't mean he's not in love with Jack, he just doesn't want to be serious. Not because he's afraid either, he just doesn't want to be serious.

I confess, your options have made it very hard for me to choose!

I think Ianto's flat looks anally tide, but that's just because nothing's in it. It is very sparse and very bare, because when he came back to Cardiff, it was to get Lisa well. He got the cheapest place he could find, on a month to month lease. Because when Lisa was better they were going to go somewhere else and pick a place together. And then she didn't. But he was fucked up enough and broken enough that he didn't care to change it, and then kept spending all of his time at the Hub anyway, and just kept the same place. He pretty much only goes there to sleep and change his clothes.

I think Jack introduced Ianto to kink, and he took to it like a duck to water, and that he's a very clever boy. I would not find it at all surprising that he could think up something that would shock Jack with his filthy, filthy mind.

And I think Jack is an omnisexual slut who wants someone to love him. He is somewhat more mouth than he is trousers, but not horribly.

Ianto's parents and grandparents are dead, but he has some cousins in North Wales that he left some furniture with when he moved back from London.

Okay, so "undecided but thinking about getting serious" is winning over "commited, serious and monogamous" and I'm kind of twisting my head over why? Is it that as quite a few people have commented, people are put off by the "monogamous" part? Or do I have a different sense of what "committed" means than the majority of respondents? Because I really can't see how Ianto could be any more committed to Jack/Torchwood than he already is, and to me, Jack also seems very serious about Ianto -- maybe he doesn't / can't commit in the normal 21st century sense of commitment, but he seems to be giving Ianto whatever he can give to the full extent he can give it.

You're right of course, about not everyone seeing commitment/seriousness from Jack. On second thought, I guess it's the "both undecided" part that's tripping me up. I suppose my expectation is that for those who don't see commitment/seriousness from Jack, what they are seeing would be something like: "Ianto is more committed/serious than Jack, but they are both thinking about getting more serious."

I know, if you sat around trying to think up all possible variations for a poll like this, you'll never get it up! *g*

I totally agree with you on this. I ended up picking 'huge mess' as well. Why couldn't there have been an answer like 'Comfortably lived in but not a trash heap like Owen's?'

Actually, i wouldn't have seriously picked that anyway. I wasn't criticising, just poking fun at Owen mostly. If you were to put in answers to satisfy everyones point of view then we'd be here until the end of next season and then we wouldn't need a poll. But i think you should do another one. But not coz this one is inadequate- because it's not. It's freakin hilarious! But because we want more hilariosity. Plz?

I put "Time Lords" for what Ianto's family are, but dead is probably an accurate desciption as well.

The question about Jack: - omnisexual - All mouth - wants to be luved - just a guy I think this is counter to trend, but where is gay as an option? I think Jack is a man with a wide variety of sexual experience whose primary orientation is gay. Jack loves Gwen, but he is "in love" with Ianto. There is nothing wrong with having a preference, and romantically, Jack is most drawn to Ianto. Jack realizes his ultimate sexual/emotional connection with males. That's why he's gay. He enjoys sex with others, but boys are where his heart is. Anyone agree? Gwen is a powerful draw for Jack -- she is lovely, warm, mature, wise and has emotional wealth to spare. She is a romantic mother figure in some way and is his equal on many levels - intelligence, honesty, confidence in her reading of the hearts and minds of others. (Ianto has a challenge here, he is highly emotional and capable of deep feeling, but he is a boy and has less command of his heart. Ianto knows this, he knows Jack needs Gwen because there are needs she fulfills -- Jack feels truly "seen" with Gwen. Ianto is younger, emotionally volatile, needy too. In true need (someone is gonna kill the Doctor and Jack is powerless to stop) would Jack turn to Gwen or Ianto? Not clear. Ianto will try hard to be the one Jack turns too, but it will be an effort.) Ianto loves Jack, he did shortly after meeting him. He came to scam Jack and Jack rejected him. He proved himself and Jack - decent, honest, loving Jack -- opened the door to him. I suspect Ianto has known precious little evenhanded treatment, perhaps his family (hints of mental illness) was really messed up. Here comes this commanding authority (father) figure who treats him with fairness and kindness and rational emotional responses. When they trap the pterodactyl and Jack gives him a job, Ianto hurries away, crying. Why? Well one, Jack is open to him and has judged him worthy. The acceptance and affirmation from a respected figure is overwhelming to him. And two, they have just shared a moment of physical intimacy -- lying atop each other. Ianto is a scammer. He knew from the getgo that Jack would respond to this flirtation and started in with "I love your coat." Ianto feels rumblings of desire for Jack immediately, but represses them. He lets them into active consciousness because the scammer in him sees an opportunity. But that opening swallows him up -- he allows himself to feel the respect, affirmation and acceptance (love) Jack has given and that in turn gives free reign to a powerful counterpart -- physical love. Ianto walks away in tears because he's now in love with Jack, the respect and friendship part AND the "you make me tremble" part are in sync and WHAM! Can he be dishonest to Jack for Lisa, when this intensity of feeling, this alignment of the planets, was never part of their love? Maybe guilt over this betrayal of Lisa explains some of his actions in Cyberwoman? So, Jack is Gay? Yeah. Gay means you find physical and emotional love most powerfully in a person of the same gender. Could he find the same thing with a woman? I suspect not, or he'd make more quips about "ex-girlfriends" and the main love story would be about him and Gwen. Don't get me wrong, he loves Gwen -- he lets her get away with insubordination when she refuses to retcon Rhys because he can't stand the idea of life without her -- but he needs Ianto and Ianto's physical presence so badly it hurts. He needs his lips on Ianto's neck and Ianto's earlobe in his mouth and Ianto subsumed in his arms. Can we argue he feels the same about Gwen? Nothing wrong with having a preference. Jack is open sexually, but he is also gay. It is with a man that he experiences the most complete and compelling love. That's what gay is all about. Can some individuals feel this complete love for both a man, a woman and a alien? Perhaps. I have not seen it, but I do not reject it. One thing is for sure, for me, Jack is an omnisexual homosexual. I know some fetishes should be kept to oneself, but cannibalism has come up in Torchwood... I want an episode where some villian (not Shelob) has captured Ianto to eat him and Jack has to save him. Dunno about you folks, but I sure want to eat Ianto! Raoul
