RAEG

Yes, I am working on a carefully worded post about what it is that's making me not want to watch Miracle Day. In the meantime, though, may I express one quick angry thought and it's this:

SERIOUSLY, IF I SEE ONE MORE LINK TO BARROWMAN GLEEFULLY TELLING EVERYONE ABOUT HIS NAKED ASS AND HIS NON-GRATUITOUS GAY SEX SCENES AND WHY WE SHOULD ALL BE WATCHING THAT SHIZ, after all that BULLSHIT go watch Supernatural, you're fetishising gay men PREACHING from RTD two years ago, I swear I will SMACK A BITCH. YOUR HYPOCRISY IS SHOWING, HONEY. PUT IT THE FUCK AWAY.

I should maybe stop reading the daily, but dammit I STILL LOVE TORCHWOOD (old skool) and I'm not about to drop out of the proceedings just because I don't want to watch Barrowman's naked arse humping.

Maybe they should start making two dailies? Really draw the line and split into factions? I don't know. Don't mind me.

[identity profile] radiant-pip.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
EXACTLY! It's so annoying. Worse thing, though, is apparently RTD was right. All anybody wants to see (by viewing the majority of the comments from various Torchwood communities) is Jack getting it on with some guy...any guy. (And supposedly there will be two guys during the course of MD and twice as much sex!) So much for the integrity of the show and all that. PLEASE. Hypocrisy is right...oh wait, but they're telling proper love stories this time, so it's essential!

[identity profile] beesandbrews.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
I figure there's a fairly limited number of things JB *can* talk about with any enthusiasm in regard to MD, so that's why there's an endless repetition of 'naked ass' and 'things blow up'. He certainly isn't spending loads of time talking about the amazing evolution of Jack's character arc, is he?

[identity profile] cionaudha.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
I wish Ianto's ass had been a crucial plot point. Or his cheekbones even. Not gonna lie.

Full disclosure: there's pretty much nothing TPTB can do to make me not adore TW. They can change the flavor of the cheez in my Cheez Doodles all they want, I'm still craving a bag.

That said, it is very different from old skool TW. Not as adorably daft, and a bit too slick.

[identity profile] takenatwork.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
Plus, his hype meant the BBC had to say "it's not in our version" and the ensuing censorship criticism they got. Hypocritcal, because JB probably always knew the BBC would cut it. But, yeh, the treatment of the fans does reek of hypocrisy.

[identity profile] rivier.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ten seconds. they took ten seconds out of the overall scene, cutting frames both in the Jack/m and Rex/f scenes, because it's going out at 9:20 on terrestrial TV here. Even bloody RTD has said he thinks it's absolutely right for the BBC to make this cut, and that nothing material will be changed as a result. But from the howls of outrage across the fandom, you'd think they were cutting a main character, not literally a few seconds of Barrowman's bare bum.

Still, although it looks like an awful lot of people complaining, it's probably only 9 hysterical women...

[identity profile] lawsontl.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
We have a rota. It's a different 9 every day so we don't get fatigued.

My RAEG!!!OMETER gets pinged over the oddest things with this whole thing. Like Dillon Casey saying in an interview (linked on TW comm) that the BIG NUDE GAY GAY GAY MEN HAVING SEX SEXY SEX scene comes about when Jack, still apparently getting over the loss of his lover who died recently (ORLY?) goes to a gay bar to score and let off some steam, where he pulls Brad the Bartender [for that scene that's going to be not in any way gratuitous and is in fact completely essential to the plot, as it will tell us MEANINGFUL THINGS about Jack and his relationship with this man who is both a colleague and his sole love interest for the last two year- OH NO WAIT THAT WAS COE. BE SURE THAT YOU'RE KISSING LIKE SOLDIERS NOT LOVERS, JOHN!]

Holy fuck. Anyway, I'm there going gay bar? GAY BAR???? Because since when the fuck did Jack actually NEED to go to a gay bar to pull another man? What the fuck happened to the omnisexual super-charmer who was happy to shag anything if it's gorgeous enough? IDK, it just seems so un-Torchwood, that it has to be a gay bar and has to be a man he sexes up, so it's clear that Jack's GAY and only having sex with other PROPER GAY GUYS and not being a pervy bi guy who - gasp! - might be out there dangerously seducing your perfectly normal heterosexxual straight friends / relatives / colleagues / husbands / selves into the beastly act of Man On Man Loving. I mean, that stuff's cool and all on progressive old STARZ, but hey just keep it confined to the gayers, right? Don't start suggesting proper real normal het men might be That Way Too when Gay Jack's in town!

Okay, so maybe that's completely wrong, it isn't really a gay bar and Casey's just a total bungalow. BUT I BET IT FUCKING IS. And it's just another of the ways in which this stupid fucking mess is NOT Torchwood: Torchwood as defined by everything from characters and setting and backstory to POV and ethos and style and, and - I could go on, but now I want to write a big bloody ranting post about that too. SO maybe I will!

Personally, I like the way so many of the people who were right there metaphorically clapping RTD on the back and agreeing that those silly Ianbots were only cut up about CoE because they didn't have their gay dollies to play with anymore, are the ones salivating and rubbing themselves up the hardest over the prospect of tonight's masterpiece. They are getting exactly what they want, the only thing that really matters to them, and they didn't even need to start watching Supernatural! And when Jack fails to rise from the dead at the end of MD's run, I do hope they won't do anything as hypocritical and hysterical as to utter a single word of complaint about that.

BBC audience last night was down nearly half a million on the first week, and actually dropped to 4m by the end of the ep, so the odds on it coming back even as a Jack-free CSI:Gwenwood are looking iffier by the week, I reckon. If I hadn't been one of the section of people in this fandom who've been so persistently disparaged for the last two years by all the 'true' fans, I might not be taking such bitter joy in the slow death of this reanimated corpse. As it is, you bet I'll dance on the damned grave as soon as the coffin is covered over. In high heels, a flamenco dress and no knickers.

[identity profile] lawsontl.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a glorious train wreck, isn't it? I'm just hoping Jack gets a little redemption/peace before they kill him off, not more misery. After that, I can pretty much let go.

Though this whole scenario with Andy "just following orders" after the way things ended in CoE? *sigh* Not expecting anything about that to make sense.

Anyhow, don't you know, gay men go to gay bars to have teh gaysexxin? They don't meet cute or have stable, loving relationships. It's deeper and more complicated than that, even when it's just a one night stand. We will never understand how meaningful it is because we're too busy fetishizing them.

Now, go kiss like soldiers while we remind you how many people you've killed (in.every.episode). Oh, and if you get any happiness, we'll kill that person, too, so you can have the necessary pain to support our DRAMATIC story arc. We'll be off watching Gwen and Rhys make babies and, more significantly, LIVE.

Then again, I fully expect Rhys to be dead by the end of the series.

TW is a parody of itself now, and I'm having a blast with assisting that process. Plus, I do have a soft spot for the hot mess that is Jilly. We'll see how long that lasts, though. I've learned not to get attached. I'm already guessing how she'll die.

I really love your anger, you're doing good work! My fave line is ersonally, I like the way so many of the people who were right there metaphorically clapping RTD on the back and agreeing that those silly Ianbots were only cut up about CoE because they didn't have their gay dollies to play with anymore, are the ones salivating and rubbing themselves up the hardest over the prospect of tonight's masterpiece I laughed out loud.

I'm not surprised about the drop in ratings, at this rate it will be shafted to BBC2 late night in a couple of weeks. I only saw a few minutes because it was dull, and stupid.

I know, I would laugh. They could easily shift it, they did with Outcasts. But I don't know what the critical ratings drop would need to be, probably down to 2 million or something. I guess if it drops below what they can get for a repeat of New Tricks or something similar.

it is amazing isn't it , how the big issue of fandom unrest is Barrowman's arse this time around ...

I agree totally about the way COE was made such that Jack and Ianto did not share one moment of affection until Ianto was dying ... and now it's all about the 'hot gay sex' scenes which are totally necessary for plot and character development ... perhaps Jack has taken to heart those words of Ianto's when he wanted a quickie - 'the world's always ending'- and so he may as well shag what he can while he's still alive and can get it up ... except of course it has to be a guy from a gay bar as Jack's conveniently forgotten that he can seduce anyone anywhere with a cheesy pick up line.

And you've got it in one - we were all told that the only reason we were upset at the treatment of Ianto was because we were only ever interested in watching cute guys together and that if that's what we wanted to watch we should shift allegiance to Supernatural for the Wincest ... so it's not hypocritical at all to tell us we'll love TW:MD for the *boy, oops, we mean man, sex* ... and hints that the whole mess is down to a past romantic relationship of Jack's ...

I'm fast forwarding through recordings of it to keep up with the bad reviews .. and I am not surprised the viewing figures have plummeted already in the UK - we interesting if a naked Jack can still raise the ratings like he claimed back on DW when he was assaulted by a 'defabricator' ...

as for the rage... there are 9 of us I guess and we're still around to feel the rage ...

I can't bear reading fans moaning they don't get to see the JB arse moving up and down. Talking of feeling sick in your mouth. That makes me feel sick in my mouth, and it astonishes me that anyone can see it as anything but prurient. (And I have no objection to sex or porn, but this is different, it's purely gratuitous, and sounds quite tasteless to boot) I like JB a lot more than you do, but I feel that's just TMI, I don't want to see it.

Also I'm bloody sick of Americans going on about the BBC, when their mainstream channels don't even show a snog between men. The Beeb do well, this scene is probably just beyond the taste levels for prime time. The show is on pay per view an cable in the US and Australia, not on free to air channels, why are they even comparing it?

[identity profile] radiant-pip.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, well, unfortunately they're being rewarded. Ianto fans on the other hand supposedly get a mention that just might stir things up again. Yay!

[identity profile] nobleroman1.livejournal.com 2011-07-23 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I being too cynical when I say I believe it's all a publicity stunt?

[identity profile] nobleroman1.livejournal.com 2011-07-23 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm American and wholly unfamiliar with the workings of the PR dept of the BBC. It's just originally I was questioning myself, asking would they go so far with the stunt to actually release an official statement regarding all the "drama" over a 3 second edit? It just seems a bit ridiculous

And if the motive is as you’ve suggested, then yes, they have misunderstood the reasoning behind – at least - my outcry over the killing of Ianto.

I gave up after episode two :( It's neither hilarious like the first two years nor Actually Any Good like CoE. It's the worst of both worlds, pretty much. :(
