tencrush: (eleven mad man)

YAY

I haven't actually commented on The Big Bang yet, so I'll do that now.

Yeah, that was pretty much the fantasicest thing I've seen on my telly in a good long while. It was clever without being far fetched, it was funny and touching at the same time, it was epic yet felt intimate and personal, it was everything I want from a finale episode of Who, and not a hint of emo manpain in sight. It was, in fact, the polar opposite of anything RTD's ever done, which is weird, because the threat, the storyline itself, was as world-shattering as anything RTD's ever attempted. The whole universe, all of space and time, ceasing to exist, big threat, yup, but where RTD would illustrate his big threat with EPIC SHOTS of BILLIONS OF DALEKS AT THE TAJ MAHAL AND IN NEW YORK BECAUSE IT'S A BIG THREAT, REALLY, LOOK HOW BIG A THREAT THIS IS, LOOK EVERYONE, LOOOOK HERE'S MURRAY GOLD!!! Moffat chose to not insult our intelligence to quite that extent, he explains the threat, illustrates it with a little girl and an absence of stars and then gets on with the story, a story which actually seemed to have been crafted as an end to the series, which actually tied up loose ends, nodding to the themes that have been playing throughout of memory and remembering, perception and reality and all the rest of it. And at the same time, it was a laugh, it was fun; witty and engaging and clever and exciting and I swear I've watched it about twenty times now and I'm still enthralled by it. And I'm someone who still regrets sitting through Jesus-the-magic-troll just that once. An hour I still haven't had back, by the way. (And those five hours of Children of Earth, Rusty. And Daleks in Manhattan. And all of the Martha series except maybe the Human Nature two-parter. New Earth. Idiot's Lantern. The hideous one where Donna gets mind-wiped. All of the specials. Good God, man, you owe me like a whole day of my life.) Oh, and how wonderful was Smith as a dying old man? Anyone not sold on this guy by now has got to have absolutely no heart whatsoever. Your loss, dudes.

Which brings me to:

OHHEMMGEE, I seriously cannot believe there are people out there who don't love this man. IT'S GODDAMN RORY, PEOPLE! Boy who waited! I LOVE RORY. I'll say it now so you all can get used it, I freaking love Rory. For reals.

Yes, he's a bit of a typical Moffat guy, he's slightly bumbling and incompetent and less able to deal with life than the awesome and beautiful and competent women in his vicinity. That's a thing Moffat does a lot and I can see how it bugs people, but fuck that, man. He's sweet and he's nice it's not like he's useless or a coward or anything like that, he's just a good guy. (And yes, she sure does flirt with the Doctor, but that was laid on so heavily, especially in the last ten minutes of The Big Bang, that I firmly believe it will be A Thing next series. I don't think it's a thing Moffat just hasn't noticed, I firmly believe after this series of Who that there's not a single thing in the world Moffat doesn't notice or does by accident.)

Random observation: Rory reminds me a bit of Arthur Dent. I think that might be why I like him as much as I do. He does that observational thing a lot where he says "you're bringing back the aliens of death" and "now you're getting undressed" and "you're not in the Pandorica." I love that thing. He appears, with every phrase he utters to be trying to take in and process what is going on around him, simply by repeating the facts, out loud, to no-one in particular. "It's a nice day." "You're very tall." "So this is it, we're going to die." <3 <3 <3

I wished for a couple in the TARDIS last year, and it seems I've got my wish. Awesome. I cannot fucking wait for next series.

Oh, and tomorrow, I shall be celebrating the wonderfulness this past Who series and the impending one year anniversary of the tragic death of Ianto Jones by posting a picspam of Richard Ayoade of the Boosh and IT Crowd, whom I have ceased to find "strangely hawt" and now simply find "fucking hott." LOL, I'm so fickle.

And Rory's the guy who remembers he left the gas on, while Amy runs off to have mad adventures. And mad adventures are wonderful, but you need someone to make sure you don't burn the house down. Which, really, is a big part of why the Doctor has companions in the first place.

[identity profile] rexluscus.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
OH RICHARD AYOADE WHY ARE YOU SO WONDERFUL

[identity profile] furius.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
All this! And I love Rory, too, who is, I think *reasonably* wary (unlike Amy, who is Very Fearless, but it's her character) without being unadventurous about all this traveling with the Doctor business. Also, 2000 years and ROMAN LEGIONNAIRE.

he must've met Capt. Jack, when he was still..worthwhile...

I love that Moffatt is subtle and brings us to notice the big things by illustrating the little things i.e. "Star Cults"

[identity profile] cionaudha.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Season Five has been fucking brilliant. Can I just say how relieved I was to see the finale puzzle worked out by brainwork and sacrifice and not a huge fucking intergalactic battle?

Who wouldn't want a man like Rory Fucking Williams?

[identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
LOl u ship amy/rory

[identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not understand this concept of ships that don't have Eleven in them.

[identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you ship the OT3 at least?

[identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com 2010-07-01 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
PS: Is Ianto still dead?
PPS: Are we going to have to have a shipwar now? :( I don't know how to watch DW when we don't agreeeee on it.

[identity profile] nostalgia-lj.livejournal.com 2010-07-01 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Shall we try to remember him back to life?

I see it there but then I ship it so I would wouldn't I?

[identity profile] ella-caramella.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, Rory. And fun and entertaining and stories that make sense. I'm not used to all that anymore.

OT, but have you heard Starz has cancelled Party Down. And Gravity.

[identity profile] ella-caramella.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You can bet you panties on that.

They have already run out of money for hiring all the most expensive pieces of 'bigger and better' arses to throw at Gwen's sidekick.

With special effects, 'fcourse.

[identity profile] erinnthered.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Two more cast members, including Adam Scott, had to leave to take other jobs because Starz was waffling on the pick up early on. It sort of forced their hand.

This totally sucks.

Did you see the season finale? It at least went out with a good one.

Screw Torchwood.

[identity profile] radiant-pip.livejournal.com 2010-07-01 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, those evil bastards killed my Party Down (although, I knew it was pretty much inevitable what with the ratings not being SPARTACUS RATINGS!!). Of course, it must be all Torchwood's fault. And the new guy that came over from HBO (who dared to pass on the idea of Party Down when it was offered there!?!). Just when a little well-crafted humor would've helped counter all the SERIOUS, REALISTIC, MIND-BLOWING (MELO)DRAMATIC "AWESOMENESS" of Torchwood. Oh well...at least my favorite character didn't die by 'alien fart'.

The one true tragedy of the thing is we'll never get to see a Party Down Paul Rudd guest appearance... *sigh*

On topic...LOVE Rory. Loving the new Doctor. Liking very much series 5 so far. Can't wait to see how it all wraps up in a few weeks on this side of the Atlantic.

[identity profile] erinnthered.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing to do with the ratings. They basically created a situation where the male lead had to take a job on another show because they were waffling on the pick up.

In related news, I think I may finally start watching Parks and Rec.

[identity profile] radiant-pip.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I thought ratings didn't really matter on a premium cable station (like Starz!) anyway. It didn't seem like it would get a third season for quite some time now; however, Rob Thomas mentioned in a recent interview that it was looking good for a pickup until the new regime took over. Adam Scott had already made arrangements to appear in three episodes after joining Parks and Recreation. Oh well, guess the revolving cast concept wasn't bulletproof.

And if they were basing it all on the finale ratings, airing the season finale two weeks before its scheduled air date wasn't smart.

:(

[identity profile] th-esaurus.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
This post delights me because I have read like seven things recently about how Matt will NEVER BE AS GOOD AS DAVID TENNANT and this series was such a disappointment.

What series were those people watching.

RORY GREW ON ME. In this two-parter, he grew on me.

[identity profile] meleth.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
But Matt emotes subtly.

[identity profile] th-esaurus.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
How dare he.

[identity profile] 51stcenturyfox.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, this series has made me happy not just because I liked it, but because so many people on my f-list liked it, and fans being happy jazzes me up. :)

Look, emotional stories without a bunch of horrible deaths!

[identity profile] alba17.livejournal.com 2010-07-01 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
And no one lost their memories either.

[identity profile] dune-drd.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't care much about any character apart from Rory this year - dammnit, that guy is so awesome! And yeah, I can totally see him as Dent there, with a crazy alien friend who would probably dance like the Doctor at weddings

[identity profile] lorelei-chase.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't say much other than this series was absolutely bloody magnificent and that the characters were so beautifully crafted that I loved every minute of it!

RTD, who now ...?

[identity profile] as1mplegirl.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Liked series 5 except Victory of the Daleks though no classics in it for me.

Like the idea of Rory but feel he's been more of an appendage to Amy than a character in his own right and I find their relationship slightly off. I'm hoping this gets fixed next season and that he gets promoted to full companion with name in credits and their relationship is pitched in a way that I like it more.

Also for next series hopefully more River and hopefully those who suggest Jack will be in next series will be wrong.

[identity profile] stargazer60.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. To everything you said.

[identity profile] qthewetsprocket.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
When I first heard Ayoade in The Mighty Boosh radio series, I thought he was David Mitchell putting on a deep voice.

[identity profile] erinnthered.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Matt Berry's voice does both at once, which is kind of kinky.

Yeah, very strange...but I like it.

re Moss: I believe you mean RUDDY hot.

You put your finger right on what I love most about Rory. That nonplussed, deadpan observational stuff.

"So maybe 'what rings true' isn't so simple."

[identity profile] takenatwork.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I've ended up smiling at the end of so many episodes this series and there are so many reasons why - the skill, the style, the wit, the writing, the acting, the subtlety - and of course, the story. I've loved it.

[identity profile] ghira.livejournal.com 2010-07-01 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
so blink gets written off as part of the martha series? harsh

[identity profile] bandgeek01.livejournal.com 2010-07-01 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
What you said about the Big Bang. I too absolutely loved it. I thought it was brilliant.

[identity profile] alba17.livejournal.com 2010-07-01 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree 100 percent. The contrast between this finale and all of RTD's was glaring. This was so much more satisfying. I love Rory too!

[identity profile] erinnthered.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Disclaimer: I know I haven't changed the font yet, but I will. I just needed this icon for this post.

I agree with pretty much everything about this post. I heart my Doctor Who overlords so, so, soooo much!

This series got me watching the Confidentials again. The adventures of Karen and Matt have been a surprisingly fun addition to this whole adventure. And hey, it's an adventure again!

I kind of understand those people who prefer RTD's style, but to me it's like admitting you prefer Michael Bay instead of Christopher Nolan. That may be true, but I wouldn't be so proud of it, ya know?

Also, I want to take Arthur Darvill home and do naughty things to him.

...Maybe Matt Smith too, but really only because I could listen to him laugh all day.

I'm on the fence with Ayoade. I need to see this picspam...

[identity profile] crankyholly.livejournal.com 2010-07-04 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I think my favorite part of the finale was that it didn't go in the direction I thought it would when "The Pandorica Opens" ended. Everyone thought "Fuck, not only do we have the Daleks and Cybermen, but we have all the baddies ever! Who let RTD in here?" Then SM takes the whole thing in another direction. Sure there's the one Dalek (because you need something to hinder the gang a bit) but there is no epic battle. It's just a race against time to solve a puzzle that seems to have no solution.

RTD could pull heartstrings easily, though it always seemed like just a way to manipulate the fans. SM had me crying quietly as Eleven told the sleeping Amelia the story, but it wasn't emotion for emotion's sake. There was a purpose to it all that moved everything along.

There is no doubt in my mind now that Eleven is my Doctor and Steven Moffat is my writer.

The thing that set this series apart from the others from me was the warmth. There was so much warmth in this series and it was genuine, not manufactured from poorly plotted dramatic situations. The characters were lovely and charming and *real* and the finale? So fucking uplifting. I'd forgotten that some finales could be like that, it's been so long since I've seen one. In fact, what this reminded me of what Carol's aborted wedding from the first series of ER. It ended all hopeful with everyone dancing and having a good time together.
Moffatt seems to approach things from the perspective that 'yeah, life can be shit and terrible things happen, but look how good it can be in the end? How the struggle is always worth it?'
Whereas, RTD is 'Look how shit life can be. No, really. Look. *camera closeup of a dog turd* and scene!'

[identity profile] ceindreadh.livejournal.com 2010-07-11 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Whereas, RTD is 'Look how shit life can be. No, really. Look. *camera closeup of a dog turd* and scene!'

Oh yes, yes yes!
I don't mind depressing stuff as such, but I like to be left feeling that things have the potential to get better if you hang in there - even if we don't see it on screen, it's enough to know that hope exists. RTD's take on things is *not* something I want to watch.
