Children of Earth... again.

I still hold out a tiny bit of hope that I'm wrong in saying that thing I've been saying for the past six months, but then Amazon starts advertising this really quite spoilerrific Torchwood soundtrack and I get all down again. Ummm... it's a combination of all this "Fallen/Good Man/Sacrifice" stuff in the song titles and the fact that "The Ballad of Ianto Jones" is well over four minutes long, and the longest track on the album. And not exactly upbeat. Though, looking at it again... I still think there might be a slim chance it's not death, but voluntary retcon.

I really hope it isn't true, but if it is I will say I told you so for ever and ever.

Through my tears, obviously.

Pls pls pls let "The Ballad of Ianto Jones" have ridiculous "Ballad of Jayne" type lyrics. In Welsh.

It was only later that I realised it's a play on "The Ballad of Halo Jones".

Halo = angel = DEAD.

It'll be numerology next!

[identity profile] wiley-nilly.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. What you said. The symbol ridden picture. That track way down at the end.

I guess we can hope for a magic reset button. Or one of those sarcophagus dealies from Stargate.

I'm sorry.

Specifically, toast with melted cheese on it.

Geddit?

I AM DED OF THE DYINGNESS.

I saw/heard that last night just before I turned in, then couldn't fucking sleep because some fictional character is maybe biting the big one. Hold me, Tencrush.

I like the way it sounds: sad but strong. I love that deep twangy guitar, whatever that sound is called.

voluntary retcon

OMG. That gives me chills.

[identity profile] cionaudha.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody writes ballads about living people. Do they? Do they? Tell me they do!

I'd be perfectly content to settle for a cheezy Doctor-induced reset, if it comes to the worst.

[identity profile] dune-drd.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I interpreted the ballad as part of the awaited family!emo, the 'He was a good man' makes me nervous, though...

[identity profile] urnssadomen.livejournal.com 2009-06-17 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It could be... when Jack's involved...

As for "He was a good man", I felt it might be for the civil servant. After all, this song strike me as about someone people didn't notice or misunderstood when he was alive.

[identity profile] urnssadomen.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The Ballad is not very down in the bottom, so I recon it's probably some nice moments with Jack/family etc. If they were going to kill him, they would do it in the end. As for "He was a good man", I'm guessing that's for Mr. Frobisher.

As a side note, if there is a season 4, I would really like to see a breakup between those two. Somehow, compare to Tosh and Owen, those two's relationship has been developed a bit too smooth. (Indeed, I read too much fanfic.)

That's exactly what I thought. I'm still holding out hope for Ianto!

(Anonymous) 2009-06-16 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Do you really think their relationship has developed too smoothly? Too many parts of Season 2 are hard for me to watch because Jack seems like he's settling for Ianto when he really wants Gwen... that's not "smooth!"

Oh, and I have to agree with later posters: Ianto dies and I'm done with the show!

[identity profile] urnssadomen.livejournal.com 2009-06-16 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
If Lisa came back to life, do you think Ianto will even hesitate for a moment before he run toward her? (Of course, assume that she's not posing any threat to the world or something, just a simple assumption, no extra sub plot.) From some prespect, I feel sorry for Jack, living lover usually don't stand a chance against the dead one. (Another reason I want to see this is b/c I kind of agree with you, Jack's been an ass for a pretty long time; but I also think Ianto is completely in control in this relationship... except the fact that Jack won't die, but that would be more of a burden on Jack's part. The thing about immortals is that their relationships usually end up with heartbreak; whereas mortals, they will just die.)

Gwen's choice would be a perfect comparison in this kind of scenario. She choose Rhys over Jack, no hesitation.

Jack's lucky only b/c he is the Hero of the show, so we won't need to venture into that part of Angst. If it's a Ianto show, there would be a mile long dead!gf v. current!lover soap coming our way.

Just for the fact that those two are developing in a pretty in sync passe. I would say that's pretty smooth... compare with Tosh and Owen. Another reason I would like to see a breakup plot is for the sole fact that Ianto is a big boy

[identity profile] radiant-pip.livejournal.com 2009-06-16 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Gwen's choice is hardly equal to Ianto's situation IMO. Ianto actually has had a romantic relationship with both of his options; whereas, Gwen did not. Easy choice for her to make in comparison.

Ianto and Jack could have many bumps in the relationship; however, it seems the RTD wants to tackle the main one...which doesn't bode well for their "future" IMO.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-16 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that Ianto/Lisa thing...even in the radio show, Ianto was ready to give up Jack and the rest of his life to go to her (and Tosh and Owen but it was Lisa's voice primarily). Gag. So, I think I see what you mean: they're both iffy about their relationship, it's not just Jack being an ass.

But that still feels "not smooth" to me, and I wish I could see some relatively smooth sailing where they were happy with each other, before the writers made them break up...or killed off Ianto!

I don't know if I agree about Gwen's choice having been straightforward. She and Jack were making eyes at each other at the wedding, even. I hated that -- I felt sorry for Rhys. He deserves better.

[identity profile] urnssadomen.livejournal.com 2009-06-16 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
When I say smooth, I meant in comparison to Tosh and Owens. I like fluff, but I get bored easily and I really think Ianto deserve better than Jack, or maybe I just want to see Jack got his heart broken (again), take your pick.
BTW, if we do a side by side comparison of Lisa/Ianto/Jack and Doctor/Jack/Ianto, I feel like those two got together by some pretty good coincidence a.k.a. they are both sort of each other's second best or bonus point. In Lisa/Ianto/Jack scenario, Lisa's dead, so there is no more conflict (no way he's gonna love another "I would like to settle down with" kind of woman as much as he loved Lisa; even if he can, the dead girlfriend would always be the shadow in the relationship; lucky for Jack, he couldn't care less); in Doctor/Jack/Ianto scenario, Team+Ianto+Purpose out weights the Time Traveling Dick, so he came back; that's some pretty heavy leverage there.

If they actually killed off Ianto... well, if I get to see Jack having a complete break down, I will at least have a temporary rush of satisfactory. Then... yes, I will be pissed. I really like Ianto, and especially found of the idea of aged-boss!Ianto; I just don't like him in a steady relationship (that's boring, should be for old people), and yes, the one he's having right now is very steady, as steady as a turtle with some really hot sex which we will never see on screen.

As for Gwen... I don't think she will give up Rhys, even if she has a go with Jack. She does lots of foolish/blind things in short run, but in a long run she's still a pretty down to the earth kind of woman.
Love is not always fire works; it isn't always exclusive either. I take the wedding thing as their final resolution toward this attraction between them for whatever reason, which in a way we really should give those two some credit; after all, they resisted that temptation. I usually respect that more than those who were not attempted to begin with. That been said, Rhys does deserve better, but that better just might not be as exciting as Gwen... In the end, we can't have it all, but we can always be attempted... when the right thing come along.

Ok, I'm done babbling. As a final thought, they said each characters would need to make some sacrifice in the end... Ianto really doesn't have much to sacrifice except... Jack and his life... unless his family hating him for certain choice he would make can be count as some sort of sacrifice... otherwise, either I get the break up I want or ... damn, they are going to kill him aren't they...

(Anonymous) 2009-06-17 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, I think they're going to kill Ianto. I hope not, but signs point that way. About seeing Jack having a complete breakdown: I've wondered whether Ianto's death would break Jack enough that he'd leave Cardiff to travel with the Doctor... The thought flashed back into my head when I saw the song, "I can run forever." I don't actually think it'll happen, though.

Thank you for this conversation. I've enjoyed it immensely!

[identity profile] urnssadomen.livejournal.com 2009-06-17 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed it too. It was fun.

OMG!

PLEASE oh PLEASE!

SOBS!

And I live in the damned USA so I won't see it til it hits dvd most likely.

SOBS!

Oh my spoilers much in the song titles.

So those are the only spoilers I've looked at, and yet I find myself completely agreeing with you.

Yep, I remember that hunch from months ago and I remember everyone in denial, but there are too many little indirect hints that scream out to me *totally going to happen and make you cry like a 5 year old*

Which new promo shot are you talking about? The postcard from the BFI preview or one of the other ones?

Nicole

[identity profile] bandgeek01.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, and I was just reading the BBC's Press packet http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2009/06_june/15/torchwood.shtml

and GDL's interview is very flat. John and Eve's interview talk about their characters and stuff, and GDL's just like the action is awesome, and yeah.

RTD is a one-trick pony, alas.

[identity profile] cionaudha.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
His trick should be IANTO.

Ianto tricks! Nuthin but Ianto tricks!

I'd watch.

[identity profile] cionaudha.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Dark alleys, seedy hotels, bath houses, back rooms of clubs, Bute Park...

...yeah. Yeah I would.

[identity profile] love-jackianto.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I would too. :D

[identity profile] love-jackianto.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
At least I won't have to wait for series 4, if there is a series 4, because if Ianto does die than I'm done with the show.

[identity profile] love-jackianto.livejournal.com 2009-06-16 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. RTD has to realize that killing off main characters will make people stop watching the show, after a while people will just stop caring if yet ANOTHER character dies, but I get the feeling he just doesn't care.

[identity profile] love-jackianto.livejournal.com 2009-06-16 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It's edgy, if by edgy you mean boring. I think one of my friends put it best; the Torchwood writers sacrifice drama for melodrama.

[identity profile] mellacita.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ianto gets a ballad, someone was a good man, and someone at the end can run forever. Presumably Jack, unless Ianto becomes a data ghost or Astrid or something. Ha. Worrying.

Although I think that we may find it is Rhys who was a good man. I'm pretty sure he's toast. Pretty sure Ianto is, too, though. Maybe they were both good men. Sigh.

[identity profile] coffee-kris.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Dammit, today I had convinced myself Ianto wasn't going to die because GDL is so clearly *not* working (just attending cons and biding his time until Series 4, probably eating more than his share of pie, ahem) and then you go and post this. SIGH. Now I'm going to pay money to own a soundtrack that probably foretells the death of my favorite character. Dammit! They've really got me.

I adore you but I'm really hoping your prediction is wrong and I can come here and tell you so. ;-) With all love and affection.

[identity profile] merboo.livejournal.com 2009-06-15 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
They're just making up for a lack of Ianto tracks on the first sountrack. Yeah.

I'm totally deluding myself, aren't I?

[identity profile] virginhuntress.livejournal.com 2009-06-16 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
God, I want to see this series so bad, but know I AM SO gonna regret it in a way.

Stupid fandom, breaking my heart.

[identity profile] urnssadomen.livejournal.com 2009-06-16 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Think on the bright side. The sooner they get it over with, the sooner we can move on and start on some thing more productive. I haven't been able to focus for a month now, just biding my time for COE. Hopefully the arriving audio book can scratch some itch...

[identity profile] virginhuntress.livejournal.com 2009-06-17 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Really good point. Once it's over, we can all digest it, write/read fic and take what we will out of it. I still sometimes can't believe that we haven't had a new episode in OVER A FUCKING YEAR, which definitely adds to that itch we're all feeling at TW. Is it July yet?

[identity profile] torchwoodheaven.livejournal.com 2009-06-21 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm holding on to the theory that though he might kick the bucket in a heroic and self sacrificing kind of way, he will have an amazing resurrection at the end and there will be hugs and kisses all around, and perhaps shagging into the sunset....

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

Thank god UKers can give me fair warning so I can prepare myself mentally.
