I'm wrong in the head.
It's wrong of me to just be pausing through this new trailer, cursing the fact that there's not enough Ianto in it for me to properly assess the pie situation?
Actually, that wasn't hugely spoilery, was it? I didn't actually learn any more than I already learned from the set reports. The production values look quite good, but I'm sensing a frisson of shite in there somewhere, mostly coming from John Barrowman's facial expressions. Oh, and Ianto gets to have man on man kissing AND exposition dumping with his sister (I'm assuming that was his sister) who thinks he's a civil servant? Pardon me while I tick off the appropriate "impending death" boxes over here. If out of those "two and three" who got away, Ianto is indeed "three" and not "two", than he's definitely dead by the end of the episode. I would actually find it hugely entertaining if it turned out that Ianto was "two", I really don't know why. In fact, I think the question of which one is two and which is three is going to be my biggest thing when watching this. I get the feeling I may need the distraction. So, yeah. There's children and explosions. Wooo... big news.
Still no clue about when the hell it's on, though. Arsewipes.

Only a small section of the fandom thinks Ianto is going to die, and have been thinking so since Season One. Ignore them. He is a brilliant character who JB admits keeps Jack "human" and Ianto is slowly becoming a key member of the team, and the most popular character after Jack. It's that element that I think threatens people for some reason.
I'm sorry but none of the separate statements in that paragraph have any logical connection. Firstly, Ianto has nearly been killed off twice already, so people who have been expecting him to die haven't been entirely wrong. Secondly, he would be far, far, far from the first popular, brilliant, key character to be killed in any show. (In many people's minds not even the first one killed in Torchwood.) And thirdly (without even addressing the miss-placed snark of the "threatened" comment) far more people who love Ianto are afraid he will be killed off than those who don't.
I have several reasons I'm scared silly that Ianto (who for the record is my favourite character and while I find the idea of being threatened by him disconcertingly erotic, I'm guessing it's for none of the motives you were inferring) that will not be around for series 4 and that's even without the persistent spoiler rumours around the place...
One of which is that by making his relationship with Jack so overt he has been placed fairly and squarely in the most dangerous seat in TV Land, ie the Lead's Love Interest. How many of them survive the story arc?
More importantly, the very fact that Gareth himself originally said that he was intending to go to LA for pilot season is a great big screaming alarm bell to me that here is an actor who considers himself free and uncommitted and looking for a long term gig. You don't play that game for the hell of it, you go knowing that if you have the luck to be picked out of the flood of actors from all of the English speaking world who converge on Hollywood at that time of year that you are in a position to sign on for the long run. You don't go thinking you probably have to be back in the UK by the autumn to start filming for several months solid. Casting for less than regular roles is done at another time entirely.
So yeah, I'm worried and I think I have every reason to be.

I love double standards like this. Many claim that this is why Gwen is "safe" because she would then become the 'love interest'. Or that she was safe in s1 because it was seen as her being the 'love interest' to Jack. So why is Gwen safe and Ianto not?

He doesn't consider himself free and uncommitted, he knows that s3 isn't going to be shown until mid year. Then it depends on if the beeb are happy with the ratings before they green light s4. Everyone involved in the show have said if everything goes to plans then they won't start shooting until the end of the year. So he knows he has a whole year to try and earn money. Why not take the opportunity, when you have been paid for an LA appearance (which often includes flights) to come over a bit earlier and see what you can get, or at least get your name out there. To do it around a time when you are being mentioned in the media as one of three leads for the BBCA top rating show, smart boy.
Oh and the persistent spoiler rumours dates back to one post on the Doctor Who Forum where a poster, with limited history on the site, claimed that either Rhys or Ianto will die because they know someone on the production staff. It then got repeated all over the place.

Because she would not be the overt love interest, she would be their cliche ridden little "love that cannot be". They could have their cake and eat it too, she and Jack can make moon eyes at each other until kingdom come but never have to act on it because she's OMG! married. It's TV's favourite type of romantic interest, one with a stonking great obstacle, the kind that has been dragged out ad nauseum by show after show. Does she love Rhys? Does she love Jack? Does anyone frankly give a shit by the time they get sick of torturing the viewers? In my heart of hearts I want to believe that RTD et al are better than that but I'm not quite sure I can.

I agree that he is a smart boy but you are still missing the point that if he was indeed putting himself up for pilots then he is looking at roles where he would be expected to sign a contract for several years, to commit to US shooting schedules that in no way leave time for going home to shoot several months of Torchwood no matter whether it's August or December or even next year entirely. Pilot season is a big, ugly meat market, worth the trouble if you want to try your luck for what may turn out to be a long term thing but certainly not the time to be looking a bit of something to tide you over before your real job starts again.

*shrug* Bigger spoilers have come out of smaller sources before today. The first hint I got of Owen's departure fell into my lap from the most unbelievably random and unexpected source that I didn't give it a second thought. Didn't make it not true, did it? Nor will the same three or four of you shouting down anyone who expresses a fear about it with all of your spurious assumptions of why it can't be true. It could be. It might be. I sure as hell hope it won't be. But I'm certainly not going to be stomping around declaring it impossible until I've seen it with my own eyes.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-07 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)Currently . . . smash shows are renewing for 5 months not years. . . .Times are tight. Long term deals expensive.
If there is a strike all bets are off.
And who the hell wouldn't rather be in Los Angeles than in Cardiff in February.
US shooting schedules --- Do you have call sheets - do you know how long it takes to shoot a season ? I do.
That is dependent on the show. Some shows get canceled before they air... You liked it ? Too bad you don't count.
Yes Gareth is a smart boy with a smart agent who can work a deal if someone wants him badly enough.
Its a business that the bottom line.

The only reason why I'm not convinced that Ianto will be killed off in series 3 is because the writers would be repeating themselves at the start of S4 - ie let the team get over the deaths of Owen and Tosh in series 3 and then repeat the situation all over again in series 4 with Ianto.
It all boils down to whether RTD thinks Ianto is too important to the show to lose at the moment, especially so close to lossing Owen and Tosh.

2) The person who first started the rumour about Ianto dying in series 3, said that a member of the film crew had told her. Now I don't know about film crew who are at the bottom of the ladder of authority but those at the top certainly wouldn't go around giving out big spoilers. Even the death of Tosh didn't get out until just 2 weeks before Exit Wounds aired and that came via a James Marsters website. Also, she said that she couldn't say on the forum itself whether it would be Ianto or Rhys because her 'friend' would know it was her who'd leaked the info. Well I'm quite sure that her friend would know it was her anyway.

I'm still 50/50 regarding Ianto's death.

Don't forget the importance for keeping Ianto around in the books--who else could they get to turn into a woman or be a choirboy?? (He gets some of the most interesting plots...)
