MY RANDOM WHO AND TORCHWOOD PREDICTIONS

I've got a few random predictions floating around my head, so I thought I'd spew them out here for posterity. They're based on absolutely nothing, apart from vague gut feelings.

  • Moffat's Who will have TWO companions. Boy/girl. Mainly because Moffat can't resist being a bit different and can't help injecting a bit of sitcom-esque bitching and UST into the TARDIS, which, having logically taken the Doctor-has-a-penis thing to its zenith, would have to involve two other people. Moffat's great strength is writing for multiple characters, he needs various personalities to bounce around and I am nearly 100% certain about this prediction.

  • The girl will be a Sally Sparrow-esque capable mix of clever and ballsy and cute, I wouldn't actually rule out Sally Sparrow herself, just because Moffat's a joker like that. The boy will be Ianto. Okay, so that last bit's about 80% wishful thinking, but I'm not ruling it out completely because I'm just... not.

  • Jack will leave Torchwood at the end of TW series 3. This ties in with my prediction that Jack and Ianto will split up during series 3, but possibly for reasons you're not expecting. John is actually leaving Torchwood behind, but I have a hunch he features in one of the three Who specials, as I believe Jack's story will be tied up BEFORE the eventual regeneration. I don't believe Jack will ever interact with Eleven.

  • Taking all those things together, yeah, Torchwood as we know it is coming to an end after series 3. I don't actually believe anyone is interested in taking the show any further, specifically I don't believe John or Eve are interested in doing another series, and I think retooling it is NOT actually an option. This whole idea of a family-friendly show called "Torchwood" in the BBC's early saturday evening slot is NOT going to happen, the BBC would be far too nervous about leading the kiddies it's aimed at astray when they innocently ask Santa for the series one and two dvd's for Christmas. It's not happening. Torchwood will be disbanded at the end of series three, the Hub, blowed up and revealed to the world, will stay blowed up. ETA Again: the possibility of a BBC1 post-watershed thing is still there, yes, but I'll wait and see if Bonekickers gets recomissioned to see if Beeb1 is really aiming for a prime time LOLDrama slot, and even if they ARE doing so, that would involve, like Bonekickers, a 6-episode run, 8 at best, and I don't think Barrowman would be willing to sign for that short a series.

  • That's it. That's my view of where this is going. I have these urges sometimes to just post things up so I can point at them later and tell people I was right, and this is one of those times. Don't take it as anything more than that. And no, I don't know any more than you do about anything at all.

    ETA:
    • I wasn't going to put this in because I thought it was too weird, but the more I think about it, the more sense it makes, and because [livejournal.com profile] dick_grayson seems to be on a frighteningly similar wavelength, I'm going to go for: Voluntary retconning for Ianto at the end of TW series 3. For some reason or other to do with his family. It just seems to sit right for me somehow, and I think it's when we'll finally find out what's going on with him and Jack and to what extent. The reason I didn't want to put it in is because it's eerily similar to Donna's story in Who S4, and I figured it didn't make sense to do that again, but the more I think about it, the more I realise that sort of thing hasn't exactly stopped them before. The reason I think it might happen is because it's a good way to put Ianto on ice as a character, but not rule out a possible return somewhere in the franchise at some point in time. So, yeah, I'm definitely putting this one in. That is my S3 ending prediction.

I like the way you think. I would love to see Ianto as a companion; I'd just love to see more of Ianto in general. If Torchwood ends after series 3 (you've been right before) that would at least take some of the sting out of it.

Moffat's Who will have TWO companions.

dear gods let this be true.

I have these urges sometimes to just post things up so I can point at them later and tell people I was right, and this is one of those times.

So if (and I say if because I know you have a knack for predicting these things) you're wrong, we get to point and laugh at you, right? In a loving manner, of course.

Possible Spoilers... Look away, if you must.

Point One would be excellent. Point Two Part Two would be excellent. Points Three and Four are damn depressing to consider (though we know that the hub gets 'blown up' and it's been suggested that the 'weird children' in S3 might be part of the 'everything changes' that Torchwood - or Jack, at least - has been anticipating/holding-on-for - so it's plausible :/ ).

I will wait and see.

I expect Moffet to create a companion unlike anything Russel created during his run of the show (I hope) though whether he'll include a male companion, I don't know. If the BBC thinks viewing figures would remain high, why not?

I'm almost certain that Jack and Ianto will be over by the end of series 3, though I think it will be on good terms rather than bad. I also think there's a 50/50 chance that Rhys will be gone by the end too, though I don't believe he'll be killed off.

I think JB will be gone from Torchwood by the end of this series or the next, although unlike many people, I think the show could continue without him. Who knows, if Gareth's career takes off like a rocket in the next 5 years, he could come back to lead the show in 10 years. :)

Ianto for companion?

yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes

but it won't happen.

(whimper) please be wrong please be wrong. At least about (a) Jack leaving TW or (b) S3 being the last.

The one thing that makes me think it's a possibility is that I heard that JB is doing another concert tour in early summer next year, which if true would mean that filming of a S4 couldn't start until later in the year and would probably end up running into his panto season.

I thought the 'family friendly Saturday evening' show rumour had been put to bed so to speak. Given that BBC are supposedly scheduling S3 in a prime time post-watershed slot, I can't see that they'd suddenly turn around and try and squash a season 4 into a 'family friendly' slot. (or maybe I'm just an optomist)

The end of Torchwood : Noooooooooooooooooo!
The end of Janto: Yay!
Ianto as a companion: yay!
No more Jack in Whoniverse: Nooooooooooo!
Gareth getting his own spin off full of the ghey: 2xYay!!!!

Aren't all of Moffat's DW women a bit like Sally? I actually like that a bit. Ianto as companion would be awesome, oh yes. Yet I can't see them end Torchwood as long as the viewing numbers are okay and they're making enough money from it. I admit it, I watched too many US shows, which made me believe in that rule. As long as it's profitable, they'll find someone to act/write it. We hear all that talk about TW season 3 that 'things will change' - I think that's actually only a Ianto/Jack breakup, if the actors stay on, I don't know. Haven't they all houses in Cardiff by now? Continuing would be at least convenient, and it's a relatively secure day job...

[identity profile] oneloveonelight.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Very interesting predictions.

I do think the next companion and Doctor will be unconventional in some way. As in, female Doctor and a male companion. Or perhaps a Doctor with a companion of the same sex. I honestly love the idea of Ianto as a companion.

I also think Barrowman will be leaving after 3 or 4 (please let there be a 4)!! I'm not on forums at all but didn't he say something like that he was leaving eventually? If BBC tries to make this a pre-watershed show, I hope all the cast members up and quit because that would be, pretty much, blasphemy. A family show format is fine for Who because it's always been that way but I especially love Torchwood because it's dark and raw and sexual.

As far as a Janto split up, I'm dreading it with every fiber of my being. BUT if it has to happen, please let them have a very significant romance/relationship story arc. I NEED some kind of full-fledged true love treacley thingie before they go separate ways.

[identity profile] dvanulya.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
1 and 2 would be fine and dandy.

3 and 4 would break my heart.

[identity profile] unfolded73.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting predictions, all. I've been hoping for a male companion from the first Moffat series, and I'd be all for a threesome (not that way - well, except in fic) as well.

Also agree that Torchwood may be coming to the end of its run, which I don't have any strong feelings about one way or the other. It surprises me that I don't have any strong feelings about it, but there it is.

[identity profile] mellacita.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Your predictions are reasonable and logical in most cases, which is part of why I am not sure they will happen. ;)

One thing, though--I thought TW was due to remain post-watershed, even with its move to BBC One? In 2010 DW will be back and can sit in its own teatime slot and TW doesn't have to fill that role at all.

Now, I will preface this with the acknowledgement that the actors can be big, fat liars, but...

1. JB was confident to the point of arrogance at the Hub that TW was not going to end after S3 and made it clear he was not considering going back to the West End because he was having such success in TV and he wants to keep doing that

2. GDL was more cautious, but said they were planning an S4 as long as S3 performed well enough

3. GDL in some of the "intimate encounters" at the Hub hypthoseized about the future based on what happens in S3 and got a bit nervous/shamefaced when someone pointed out that one might extrapoloate certain positive things from what he said. I take that to mean it was a geniune "oops" from GDL.

I think the odds are decent there will be an s4, but that will be the end of it. If it does go to S4, I expect Ianto to have a crappy ending to his story involving death, retcon, trapped in a parallel world with a clone Jack Harkness that is straight, or something similarly depressing. Like you, I don't think Jack will hang with Eleven ever. I'd go so far as to suggest they will retcon out the idea Jack is Face of Boe and make him mortal again so he can die.

[identity profile] louisema.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
End of Torchwood would make me cry, mainly because there is no WAY they'll finish it satisfactorily. We will never know what the deal with Janto is. We will always be left with the nasty feeling that Gwack might not be a figment of our imaginations (or even, we'll have it CONFIRMED in the LAST EVER EPISODE, damn).

I don't want Jack to leave - I don't think Torchwood would work without him, despite my opinions on Harkness-as-lead-character. More Captain John would be excellent, but again I think he's the same sort of wouldn't-work-as-a-main-role part.

[identity profile] alba17.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Love your tag, BTW. It could be really interesting to have 2 companions, male and female. And of course, companion Ianto would totally rock, but that will never happen.

You're killing me with your TW predictions. I don't know why you think JB will leave TW at end of S3. I thought all his public statements were that he'd stay as long as there was a show. It's basically HIS show. Does he have a better gig? I have no idea what will happen plot-wise in S3 other than the Hub blow-up, whatever that signifies. And we don't really know how much filming they do inside, do we? It could seem like more outside scenes because that's what we see them doing, while we don't see the inside stuff. Anyway, I sincerely hope you're wrong on the TW predictions. I don't want the end of the show, Ianto, or Janto.

My opinion

[identity profile] phaedra4real.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, I apologize in advance if I'm repeating anything anyone else said, but I wanted to jump in here real quick and record my guesses (if you want us to do that! this is your journal afterall. so sorry if you don't).

I don't know Moffat, nor Doctor Who (that much) so I have nothing to add to #1 and #2 bullet. I liked Sally Sparrow, in fact Blink was one of my favorite episodes. I can't look at a statue the same.

I agree Jack will never interact with 11, but I don't agree he's leaving Torchwood after Season 3. Because I've heard him and Julie talk about a Season 4, but then no speculation after that. In fact, I got the impression that they would go into filming season 4 shortly after season 3 hit the air waves.

However, I do believe there will be big changes in Torchwood with the blowing up of stuff and everything. However, because of a comment from Gareth at the Hub, he's still there (he said something like I'm still bloody well in it) and I do not believe their relationship will change (unless Rhys dies and Gwen, the slut, goes after Jack). There are rumors that Julie Gardner is moving to the U.S., and John has indicated he'd love a U.S. Torchwood. Gareth has been peddling his wares here in the U.S. (that sounds delicious). He is working with James Marsters agent. Does this mean a move to the U.S. after all the exploding? Curious minds want to know.

I do not know how Eve fits in, but John seems very happy with the character and in continuing with the show.

I do not know what it means to be on BBC1 as opposed to 2 or 3. I read it that it was an honor or reward for getting people to watch your show. I could be completely wrong. I also do not know what that means with watershed or post watershed. I'm clueless. I got the impression that there would be violence in Series 3. Not sure how much sex, etc.

So, what fun we've got while we are waiting for the show to return.

[identity profile] skywaterblue.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're right about Torchwood, mainly because RTD doesn't want to stick around and I suspect Moffat thinks of Torchwood (when he thinks of it at all) with a bit of disdain. Plus, week-long miniseries SMACKS OF 'this show is now canceled'.

I don't know about multi-companions just yet. I think The Moff is going to want to play with his Doctor for at least the first season, but I wouldn't want to bet money on it.

[identity profile] aquirkofmatter.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
The companions should be Jeff and Steve from Coupling... I'd be willing to stretch to Jeff and 'as-yet-unknown'. The world needs more people to be aware of the giggle loop and the sock gap.

(I don't think Ianto's a good choice for the TARDIS. he'd never be able to finish cleaning it, and what's the point in a teaboy that can't clean?)

[identity profile] cirrocumulus.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Not to be a bitch, but I think half of your predictions are horrible. Not like, they're completely impractical, but like I would actually have to stab myself in the intestines until I died if Torchwood ended after S3 and Ianto go retconned. I need. This show. It's pathetic, but I don't have any other shows I love nearly so much and-- I just, no. Heartbreak, it would be mine. In spades.

NOW I'M FREAKING OUT.

I need to stary getting emotionally involved in real things.

ETA: Not to be rude and horrible (JUST KIDDING, I AM) but I went and found your S2 predictions post and you were wrong about, er, all of them.

You may now smack me with a fish.

I know that John Barrowman has spoken about hopefully doing a S4 of Torchwood, and I think that GDL has mentioned some things to. I don't think your predictions for S3 will be correct-- I don't think it's the last we'll see of Jack in Torchwood, nor do I think Ianto will leave at the end of it-- but I do think they could very well apply to a S4.

ETA: I've seen a lot of people speculating that Jack/Ianto will be over by the end of S3, and I have to wonder, does this merely stem from a sense of narrative inevitability, or does someone know Something From the Powers that Be?

Oh my goodness...I'm trying to take in all your predictions. I'd be surprised if Capt Jack interacts with DW 11. Oh, I wouldn't mind DW having 3 companions and I liked Sally Sparrow.

As for Torchwood..I think there will be a S4, but after that all bets are off. John's concert tour is the month of May and he's mentioned his new variety show as well. Your predictions for TW are very interesting. Personally, I'd like to see the Jack/Ianto relationship go somewhere or end it. Maybe Rhys/Gwen will breakup and Jack will go with Gwen full time; if he and Ianto breakup. I do find the recton for Ianto very interesting. I feel if there is a S4 many changes for TW will happen over there or expand what happened in S3. From what I've read John has said each episode for S3 ends in cliffhanger and by episode 5 the story lines will all be tied up. Being it's moving to BBC1 I would think they'd be willing to invest in a S4. Again though, after that all bets are off.

Now, I may get stones thrown my way, but I'm not a huge Capt John fan and I feel the show is John Barrowman's show and it wouldn't go far if John left. John has alway said he works his schedule around Torchwood and not the other way around. However, if the show changes too drastically and not going in a direction John likes, he may want to end it after S4. Just my opinion.

I apologize for my babbling and not so organized thoughts.

Lori

I don't believe Jack will ever interact with Eleven.

See, I don't agree with this.

1- Moffat created the character of Capt. Jack and as such will want to use that character as a bridge in his stories.

2- JB is a Doctor Who whore - if they ask him, he'll come running like a dork.

What I do think is that there is very little chance of a TW/DW cross ever again now that RTD and Jules aren't driving both shows. If anything, we may see TW characters in minor appearances on SJA.

[identity profile] fairyd123.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
None of them are contracted for series 4 but John has mentioned the prospect of a 4th series of Torchwood at multiple events so I don't think it's accurate to say that he isn't interested in doing another series.

Also Torchwood isn't being sold as a family friendly early evening show - everyone was very clear at the Hub that the show would be airing post water-shed with no family friendly repeats.

Who knows if your other predictions are accurate but they're all fairly horrible concepts so here's hoping not.
