DEAR ITV NEWS...

"Alan Sugar will pick his new Apprentice tonight in the final" IS NOT NEWS. And it CERTAINLY isn't news worthy of including in your 4 headline HEADLINE ROUNDUP. THERE IS ACTUAL NEWS HAPPENING, ALL OVER THE PLACE. GO REPORT SOME.

I don't post about the world at large much, I know, so bear with me and feel free to ignore. I was watching the same ITV news yesterday and they did their usual American NBC roundup, which ended with a report on petrol prices in the US. Because, yeah, they're paying $4 and up a gallon over there. Cut back to the British studio and one of their clueless ITV bimbos, who ends the report saying in the most sarcastic tone she can muster "But, of course, that's still FAR LESS than we're paying here in Britain, at $10 a gallon." LOL. I kind of expected her to add "So I don't know what the fuck they're complaining about, stupid Yanks" Bless. The British press currently really seem to be unable to look past their little island and see the bigger picture, I swear to God, it's like they're living in a tiny little cut-off fantasy world. So, yeah, ITV newsnugget people, seriously, have a think about it and while you're at it get down on your bare knees and thank the good Lord that Bush has fucked the dollar up the ass so royally that our pounds and euros can still afford to buy the oil that goes into making the nappies I so regularly wrap around my children's arses, because one of these days the wind will change and your face will fucking stick like that. And planes bursting into flames and such? Yeah, that happened REALLY FAR AWAY, but it's still more newsworthy than ALAN FUCKING SUGAR.

Stop distilling everything down to bite-sized half-truth nuggets of infotainment and report the fucking news already. Gah.

I despair because deep down, I know all American news is like this. I don't know if I can cope with that. Ho hum.

Heh, what I don't get is why it's 'ITV' news that are counting the Apprentice as newsworthy? People, you're promoting a BBC show you idiots.

most reputable pbs stations in the states air bbc world news. of course, if the frisco pbs station is anything like the one here, they'll air it at four in the fucking morning; but hey, that's why god made tivo. or vcrs, if you're as old skool as i am. *creaks*

I second BBC World News. I believe BBC America carries it too. Cable is your friend. I believe strongly the appalling standards of our news programs (and newpapers) in the US is why we're so ignorant about what's going on in the rest of the world.

As for gas prices, but our country is BIGGER! We have to drive REALY REALY FAR in our non-fuel-efficient cheapass cars! *spits out pacifier and throws tantrum*

BBC news, baby. Internet. I haven't watched American news in years. Could explain a lot.

As for gas/petrol/whatever, I always tell my family what the prices are overseas when I come back for a laugh. Unfortunately, the past decades have set up a situation where a lot of the US is decentralized, has shit public transportation, and aren't in walking distance of anything but other houses. Well, not me, because I live in an urban center and don't have a car, yay me, but for a lot of people affordable housing is 30-40 miles or more from their jobs and like I said, shitty public transportation. Blah blah you're smart and informed and whatnot so you know all this and now I'm just babbling to hear myself type. Of course, people could pressure the system and demand public transportation or make tough decisions about lifestyle, career, too, but that would be HARD WORK.

Part of the reason that $4 a gallon is such a big deal to Americans is that in most cities we don't have the safety valve of a public transportation system, so price hikes on oil really affect the poor. And because of how most American cities are zoned, except for the really large ones, a full public transportation isn't really ever going to be possible. -_-

As for American news, actually, I like watching BBC America's newscast the best. ^^

a couple of the Bay Area TV stations have good local news programs (KTVU is probably the best) so you won't be overly depressed. its the nat'l news programs that are utter garbage. the local PBS (KQED) airs BBC World News at 5:30pm Monday-Friday.

as for the fuel prices. well, there's a need to compare apples to apples, and they aren't. US "premium" gasoline- which is $4.75/us gallon ($1.05/litre) in the SF area is lower octane and performance rated than the typical petrol95 available in the UK which is going for something like 118p/liter. my gray market MG-F, which would run the cheapest UK fuel, needs AvGas (Aviation grade gasoline) in the US and that stuff is currently about $18/gallon. needless to say, the honda is getting driven while the MG "rests".

ITV National News is AWFUL. But their local news is much better. There's such a disparity.

Yeah, in general, just avoid watching American news programs. PBS does air BBC world news at some point in the night. But hey, that's what the internets are for now too, we don't need to get our news from TV or local papers anymore.
