I read an interview where GDL says that he thinks it's Ianto's first relationship with a man so it's not surprising that many of us should get that from the performance. I find that when I read GDL's interviews, I've pretty much got the same view of Ianto that he has which says to me that GDL is doing a pretty good job conveying his vision of the character in what amounts to a very small amount of screen time.
