Of course he wouldn't be thinking straight. He'd be frantic, desperate, trying anything to think of some other way. That's why I said I would think he'd be just spouting things in a desperate attempt to figure a way out of the situation. Not ready to just shoot himself when the guy is chained up and apparently not in a position to make good on his promise.
