I was being sarcastic. It drove me crazy. They clearly got lots of criticism for having two young girl companions who loved the doctor, and Martha was worse because it was cringeworthy, all the pining and unrequited love etc. So to make up for it, they choose an older companion, and then spent the whole series underlining in every episode that they didn't fancy each other and there was nothing between them.
