BBC news, baby. Internet. I haven't watched American news in years. Could explain a lot.
As for gas/petrol/whatever, I always tell my family what the prices are overseas when I come back for a laugh. Unfortunately, the past decades have set up a situation where a lot of the US is decentralized, has shit public transportation, and aren't in walking distance of anything but other houses. Well, not me, because I live in an urban center and don't have a car, yay me, but for a lot of people affordable housing is 30-40 miles or more from their jobs and like I said, shitty public transportation. Blah blah you're smart and informed and whatnot so you know all this and now I'm just babbling to hear myself type. Of course, people could pressure the system and demand public transportation or make tough decisions about lifestyle, career, too, but that would be HARD WORK.
